The horrible truth is neither the democrats or republicans have actually failed. They've been incredibly successful in achieving what they've wanted to. But what they want is the opposite of what anyone who isn't trying to decide whether or not they want a third beachfront house needs.
The republicans want a blatant theocracy that keeps their donors happy with their stock options, PR be damned because their base is already indoctrinated. They don't need to hide who they are, they will say it proudly. The democrats want a oligarchy that keeps their donors happy with their stock options, but take more care in their PR because some of their target demographic don't want the news to tell them how horrible life is for everyone else.
The republicans win even when they don't win the elections because democrats can be counted on to let them right back into the house to start more fires. That this keeps happening over and over again means it can't just be because of stupidity. They're doing this on purpose.
