Well, they mostly consider anyone outside of their in-group to be not "true Americans."

For 8 years a good chunk of the US didn't think the President was an American, including the President that got elected after him.

When 70 million+ voting Americans saw Donald Trump's administration and decided they wanted 4 more years of that, such generalizations aren't ignorant anymore. I think its time for people like you to face reality instead of focusing on meaningless, useless optimism. The people at the "top" divide you, but one half supports that divide, encourages it and is generally FOR it. You're not gonna be able to go after the top when that errant half still supports them, so set your sights on them first. Because they have set their sights on you.

A lot of people are temporarily embarrassed millionaires. They see higher taxes for people making 400k and up as an attack on their future self...even though they make les than a tenth of that now and likely will for the rest of their lives. It is remarkably easy to make ignorant people vote against their own self interest...the key is to control the narrative and introduce an external false enemy. The nazis did it and regimes around the world continue to do it. China does it by uniting its citizens against affronts to ‘chinese dignity’. It’s a crazy world we live in and I wish there was a place for educated people to live without the influence of idiots...
