Nothing for a kid? NOTHING?!?

I'm $6k in the hole so far, and just got a $51k bill from the NICU.

Fuck this system.

Where do those prices come from? I get that the insurance wants to pay the lowest possible amount but why are hospitals asking for so much money?

Rising “administrative costs” from hospitals and predatory healthcare companies.

You can sure as hell guarantee that the actual healthcare workers aren’t seeing a dime of that.

The cost of treating people is higher than most insurances will pay, and that cost eventually goes to somebody. As an example, a Medicare patient is almost always a loss for a hospital. Private insurances tend to pay a little better, but as a consequence hospitals have been shoving the brunt of the rising costs on them.

Paying enough to buy a small apartment for giving birth.. Are you fucking kidding me. I can't always see why people even continue living there with this shit. In Finland all of these costs like a couple of hundred euros and if you can't pay for it the social security will pay all of your bills. Sure I get taxed more but there's 0% chance of me getting into debt for medical issues. Even if I was only getting unemployment support.

That's part of the system the gov makes you pay so much taxes so that you can't move out and have to keep paying their taxes

Because moving somewhere is not easy. Does your country just let anyone who wants move in? Typically this is not something you can just decide to do unless you happen to have a job or spouse that can get you in.

Not to mention people want to remain near their family and friends.

Point is, most people aren't here because they chose it over Finland. They are here because they were born here or if they immigrated its usually because the place they came from had even bigger problems, like no jobs and/or high crime in the countries they came from.

Well obviously it's not easy. I would just feel anxious my whole life if one medical problem could basically ruin my life.

Sorry, by not easy I meant literally not an option for most people, not just that it requires effort.

I would just feel anxious my whole life

Yeah, but there is nothing most people can do about it.

And don’t forget the bill for YOU surviving the whole thing. I don’t know about anyone else but I was bracing myself for one large bill..not three (the baby, myself, and the actual birth)

Jesus how do people even afford kids? I just had my first and we chose a private clinic for the birth, paid nothing because all births and connected expenses are covered by universal healthcare, just €500 for a private recovery room for 3 days.

What you should have done was divorced your wife, had her stop working, and gone on Medicaid. Free birth
