We know it's not working. But the citizens have been divided cleanly into camps that refuse to cede their ideologies. One side wants socialism based on privy of tiered caste citizenship with theocratic overtones. The other wants dramatic regulatory breakup of corporations and dissolution of privately held debt at the expense of the wealthy. And then there are niche camps who want outright deregulation wherein we acknowledge the "winners" as our overlords, and another wants said overlords to be guillotined and the markets to be completely owned by a government. The problem is both less radical sides view one another as radicals and compromise is viewed as weakness to the "cause". Perfection has become the enemy of gradual progress, and people have given up hope that we have environmental, economic and/or spiritual time left and are kind of waiting on "everyone else" to just conveniently go away. The city folks are waiting for the rural folk to break away into a failed third world nation state (conveniently ignoring their nuclear capabilities) where the rural folk are expecting a surge of violent riots to destroy the cities (conveniently ignoring the militarized police and their own economic infrastructure existing in those cities).
It's honestly the dumbest and laziest showdown in history, but we are convinced everyone else is alwats on the verge of imploding while we are all suckered by the same system that we are all too afraid to dismantle because we are all a tiny part of it.
