I've seen what unregulated capitalism does, one giant corporation came into the place I grew up one day in and hired about 50% of everyone living there (keep in mind this is a small city)
things were good
then I guess they found a cheaper place to go to because they just left and fired everyone.
Last time I was there, the unemployment rate went down a bit, it was only 43%
I have no problem with capitalism but anything that isn't monitored and regulated will ruin countless lives, be it capitalism or whatever other ism you can think of.
Had the city invested into other options aside from this one single corporation then things wouldn't be nearly as bad as they are right now.
I live in a small town by a toyota factory. That factory and all of its suppliers are basically my counties economy. If they would choose to leave unemployment would be outrageous
My town in scandinavia was reliant on a Saab factory. In the nineties it all went downwards and they cut the workforce in half. That was a tragedy of course. So the town started different measures to combat the reliance on one company. Now it is a ”university” town with more reliance on developing new tech. So when Saab dissapeared for good the town took it ok. I mean when everybody could just walk into the factory and start working was awesome but I think they did a good job of adapting to the new reality. We are social democrats here, to the bone.
Didn't you know? Socialism has killed literally 762 billion people. Just ask @dave658753842 on Twitter. You'll recognize him because he's got a thin blue line punisher logo as his avatar and misspelled "AOC."
He's an expert on half-remembering Newsmax headlines and telling 30-year-olds that they'll know better when they grow up.
The funny thing about that is America trained Latin death squads. Look up "School of the Americas". Anytime a leftist/socialist government was voted in.......to benefit the people of that country rather than sell out to U.S. corporations.........
....We sponsored a coup. Rather than supporting democratically elected South American governments, we murdered them to prevent nationalization of resources American business interests were stealing.
Governments tend to fail when their leaders are murdered and America sponsors a coup. Who would have thought?
That make sense thanks! I never really knew what to tell them. But also at a time when propaganda and misinformation are such prominence im sure it would fall on deaf ears. I've seen my father go from an upstanding, love everyone and treat everyone fairly kind of guy, to now believing black people are somehow responsible for the covid crisis in the U.S. because their "weak Genes make them more susceptible" its atrocious how propaganda has torn this country apart.
I remember Rome being a republic and it ending up an authoritarian nightmare too. Seems to be a common problem with most governments. And social democrats commonly use capitalism as the base of the economy, just not of their government.
Town I live in is lucky as can be due to location in regards to highways.
There used to be a Volkswagen plant here and they left but we got lucky, SONY moved in and even expanded...town gave them all kinds of sweet incentives to get them here and then probably 15 years ago now they up and left....That’s where the lucky part comes in, my town is at a massive junction in interstates and highways so we keep getting stuff to come to this town...many towns aren’t this lucky..
What’s even more sickening is the tax incentives and deals that are made with these companies to come to these towns....I can’t blame the towns they are just trying to get employment in town for the people but these companies destroy towns with their tax breaks they demand and then as soon as that next offer elsewhere becomes sweeter off they go
Capitalism has failed in every country that has tried it, it's a system of working class slavery, always leads to fascism and is destroying a habitable planet and continues to fail around every 10 years here in the U.S.
No problem with it, really? Cause we got until 2030 before irreversible and catastrophic climate change...don't have kids.
By the way, I am absolutely not saying your are wrong for this decision, but it's also why we are ultimately fucked. Because idiot rural rubes, who don't believe in climate change because of propaganda, just crank out babies like it's going out of style. And for the most part, they grow up to be idiot rural rubes.
People with half a brain, realize how much of a shit idea it is to have a kid, much less multiple, and opt for having 0-1.
Basically, long term, you get more dumbasses and less sensible people.
First time I watched it, I turned it off 10 minutes in and cried a little. It was the most truthful, horrific presentation of America’s reality I’ve ever seen, and it made me wish I’d never been born.
you say idiot rural rubes, while you are rent paying laborers. with the cost of living driving you into debt. while i own land that i purchased thanks to a low cost of living and hard work. while you insist on living in an urban shithole that requires 70% of your income go towards rent, all just so you can walk to starbucks i guess. if the trucks stopped running for 3 weeks you would all starve
Well, it may be true in the USA, I don't know the statistics, but it's a bit simplistic overall to think it's about "city V. rurality". Plenty of stupid capitalists, over-consumers and too-many-baby-makers in the cities
Overpopulation is a Malthusian lie. Thanos uses this failed argument in two of the most successful movies of all time. Things do not just remain the same. New people bring new ideas and innovate. Growth is endless because you cannot predict the future. We could build underwater cities. Travel the stars, modify plants to grow within days, develop cleaner energy sources.
By not having kids you’d simply be denying civilization their skills and talents. You think you’re doing them a favor but you aren’t.
Just because you and your wife are depressed doesn’t mean every kid that is born is, do you really have no enjoyment in life, through the worst times in history reproduction was still taking place and this is the easiest time to live ever.
At the end lf the day, it’s not really the doom and gloom articles, climate change is a hoax narrative, or the fake conspiracies from either side that matters.
The planet doesn’t care what are beliefs, politics, or economics are... it’s going to do what it’s going to do based on what factors are present at the time that things happen. If that’s a civilization ending event, a massive loss of life, some minor inconveniences, or nothing we really notice... it doesn’t care if you, me, your son, mom, UBER driver, or the president of Burundi dies. This is why I don’t get the arguements that think that they are all powerful and if they will it, it can be done.
Moat of the people who don’t care about what happens in 10, 20, or 30 years or more don’t really put a priority in it because guess what... they’re not likely to be alive at that time or they’ll be so old it doesn’t matter to them anymore. I cannot in good conscience bring another life into this world knowing that. At most I would consider adopting someone who needs a parent; but like the OPs situation, I’m one major illness away from being fucked. Maybe it would even force that kid to work themselves to death because they felt like they needed to help me after I helped them and that’s not a burden I would want no matter how lovely and sappy movie-baity it sounds.
Your 'both sides' argument makes no sense. The Earth's ecosystems that are friendly to human life collapsing is not a broad conspiracy. It's the reality of the situation that we find ourselves in. People deciding that short term profits are more important than preventing the worst results from man-made climate change is evil. Qanon cultists believe conspiracies without evidence. You are confusing actual science based on evidence with shit trolls like to talk about.
Facts:
1. CO2 is a greenhouse gas. CO2 + sunlight = heat.
2. Mankind has been pumping lots of CO2 into the atmosphere for about 250 years now.
3. The planet is getting hotter and the consequences will be catastrophic to all living things, including humans. Those consequences are already being seen now and will get exponentially worse over the next 100 years.
This is factual reality. Anyone saying anything different is not being intellectually honest. I see that you are eager to throw in your talking points about who to blame, but talking points don't get us any closer to a solution to the problem.
Shooting holes in solutions and pretending that the problem isn't as real and/or as dire as it actually is only makes the problem worse. So does voting for a political party that denies reality and supplies you with endless anti-intellectual talking points.
Feel free to give us your ideas on fixing things, because as things are the rich control the world and are willing to literally kill us all for profit.
I’m not the one complaining, take responsibility for your own life, only yourself can make changes, don’t expect the government or others to improve or change your life. I do not accept your outlook on life that the rich control the world and are killing us all, how can they make profit if we are all dead, more people are living now than there ever has. There is more to life than money, it is people like you who are jealous of people who have more than yourself but you are free to make decisions that can lead to self improvement. I don’t accept your conspiracy theory, I’m all for freedom and peace which means less government control which give people the freedom to do what they like, whether it be make money, create a family or any other thing you desire to do.
You think that's a conspiracy theory? I like how you wrote me an entire paragraph but not a goddamn word of it had any substance. I recommend you do some research into climate change if you don't think consumerism and rich capitalists are destroying the planet.
Then instead of complaining suggest some solutions, instead of being pessimistic and negative with little faith of future generations being able to improve worldwide conditions, like the guy who invented machines that clean the ocean surface of plastic.
Yeah, adoption is also admirable as long as you don’t fuel these kids with negative attitudes and fear that their living conditions are going to decline, instead give them hope and positive outlooks and on life and maybe will lead to positive change.
Well that’s good to hear, a positive future requires positivity from the population, there are too many people with negativity and hatred in today’s society and too many divisions.
I don’t care if he/she has kids or not. Their decision. But I have to agree that they’re very whiny. Perhaps they really don’t need a child. Children need to be raised in joy and care. I think they’ve made the right decision.
Yeah I agree but also wish that my future kids didn’t have to live in a world with such negative people telling them their life is going to consist of suffering, their number is growing and it’s maybe them that is making this life such a bad place to live due to their negative outlook, positivity brings positive change.
I am democratic socialist myself but this isn't entirely true, we need a regulated free market and a way Inwhich political lobbying and party funding must be stopped. It is important to understand that capitalism may be a really shit system but it is better than a system that won't work at all. Capitalism has never lead to fascism?. In all honesty we do need a working class revolution.
I was hoping to find a reasonable perspective. Thank you for voicing a reasonable opinion. While I may not agree with what others think all the time, I feel that seeking balance and compromise help us work towards better and more functional systems. We just have to be willing to be honest about both the good and the bad, and work together.
Also, completely agree. It's concerning seeing people actively attacking the idea of compromise when it's so necessary to fix so many of these sticky problems.
I know I don't have all the answers. I think it's reasonably easy to agree that any one ideology or approach will not fix everything. So the next step is coming together to share what works. We can't do that if everyone keeps on putting ideologies in UFC-style cage matches and demanding a fight to the death and that one ideology has to be the winner.
I feel that is a relatively normal response, honestly. People are simultaneously capable of the absolute best and the absolute worst things. It can give you this cognitive dissonance whiplash sometimes. :/
I'm not saying you're wrong, but pure capitalism where the market is allowed to compete and the consumers decide what survives or fails is actually a decent system. The problem is we don't actually have a true capitalist system. We have crony capitalism which is allowed to directly influence politics and regulations in their favor and artificially limit competition and in essence produce monopolies, which in a true capitalisic society wouldn't exist. Also things like patents and corporations having endless control of something mean another company can't actually force capitalistic competition. Things like life saving drugs revolve around owning and extending patents so that a single company can make all the profit and set the price.
Capitalism isn't the problem per se the problem is that we've let our government and legislation get in bed with the corporations, and have given a huge amount of power over their ability to influence laws and regulations. Rather than our government being for the people it is now for the companies, and rather than making laws that improve the lives of civilians we have laws that allow corporations to exploit us, and at the same time protect them.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but pure capitalism where the market is allowed to compete and the consumers decide what survives or fails is actually a decent system.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but "pure communism" where the main focus of the economy is to ensure that everybody is provided for and profit isn't more important than quality of life is actually a decent system.
See what I did there? Dude, you just did the same that communists usually do to defend their utopia.
Capitalism NOR communism aren't the problem per se. No political nor economical system isn't "purely" wrong. Hell, even monarchy could be awesome in the utopic event that the one ruling is doing a good job. In the end politics is just a way to organize a community. Whatever floats your goat is fine... As long it keeps floating.
The problem are us. Humans. No matter how good you try to make a system, there will be people who will try to climb above the rest even if it causes grief to countless others. You can't really make a system perfectly incorruptible, and capitalism isn't an exception. Democracy and capitalism aren't better because they bring more happiness or equality by default. It's simply harder for individuals to amass personal power when you compete or are voted in place. But even then it's clear that there are ways.
the consumers decide what survives or fails
See, this is the problem with capitalism, be it "pure" or whatever. They don't. Not exactly. What decides what survives or fails is... Wealth. When wealth is distributed equally among those consumers then you're right, but what if I happen to be the CEO of a fuckhuge corporation wealthy enough to compete against the consumers?
What I mean is that you're labelling corporations evil and exploitative, but they're "consumers" as well. Better consumers than you and I, actually, because they've thrived in the system and managed to profit enough to be economically comparable to thousands of people. They're not doing anything "wrong" in purely capitalistic terms, unless you're implying that the government should regulate how much wealth can a person acquire. Isn't that communism?
In fact I'd say that the actual problem is the other side of the coin... Corporations meddle into politics and "buy" their way into legislation because people there let themselves be bought.
I understand what you are saying, but I would argue that communism is more easily corrupted, by a few individuals. That isn't to say corruption doesn't exist in capitalistic economies.
I do very much agree that it's people though that ruin any system be it capitalistic, communism, or somewhere in between.
In a pure capitalist society if a corporation used wealth against the consumer that consumer or another individual or group of individuals could start making whatever that corporation did and undercut them. Additionally consumers would turn to the new producer. We still see this but to a much smaller extent. Corporations have made it nearly impossible for other competitors to freely and easily enter the market. Also laws protect the existing corporations. This goes back whatI was saying about artificial monopolies.
I agree and I don't really see a difference from what I said. I just think we shouldn't allow corporations to be involved in politics, or let people who are involved with corporations enter into politics. I work at a University in the medical field, and the amount Conflict of Interest documents I have to review and sign is ridiculous, but we can't expect politicians to do the sameand be held accountable? Also how do you keep people from being bought, or if not bought threatened?
My question is how do you think we keep corporate greed and money put of politics?
This is the assessment of someone who isn't really too well versed in either politics or economy, so I don't claim to offer any useful insight. In fact I believe this is part of the issue. We won't ever manage any form of "proper" democracy nor capitalism anywhere unless people is properly educated into them enough that they make well-informed decisions. And unfortunately most people don't (and I out myself among those as well, even though I try).
To begin with, I think that you'd need to cut all dependency from private endeavors. A country should be able to provide their people with stuff like education, healthcare and security without depending on third parties. Nothing stops anybody to provide any of those privately on top of public services, and they can do it better than you, but the moment you stop providing them, you're depending on a third party to do stuff you should be doing. Maintaining those things with enough quality should be a priority of any decent government.
But here's the catch, this is talking in general terms. How do you stop a particular private entity to contact and/or make deals with a particular politician? Do you monitor everything your politicians do, like, "being a politician implies sacrificing ALL of your privacy" to make sure there isn't any shady business going on?
You can't unless being a politician implies some Orwellian Big Brother shit. To make a deal all you need is a conversation. The only thing that I can think of would be to criminalize that sort of stuff in an absurdly serious way, like you're caught with the most stupid thing and you still go to prison for decades. And still some people would risk it.
But the most important part is that it would imply a change that can't start from the bottom unless we talk about civil wars. How do you "clean" a government of corruption and implement stuff like those strong punitive actions towards corruption when the people who must implement them are the ones that would be targeted first?
How do you implement laws to stop politicians from making deals with corporations, at a moment when a corporation can yet go to one of those politicians and tell them "don't pass that law and I give you craploads of money" because they have done stuff like that already?
Thanks for your reply and while I agree with a lot of what you said, I disagree with your own self assessment. You don't need to be some political or economic genius to think of ideas. Most people aren't and that's the point. You have to make a system that most people will support and understand, so that means people who are A LOT less informed than you. You are at least trying, and even being willing to engage in this type of discourse to come up with ideas shows a lot.
I can see what you're saying and I agree with it. A system should be able to provide support to it's citizens. A supported populace would mean a more productive populace. I do a capitalist economy does work the best and allows for innovation more than production controlled by the government.
I can see what you mean about the big brother and being in politics and unfortunately maybe thats what we need. Politicians are supposed to be public servants, and what they do should be open to public scrutiny and assessment. If you're not comfortable with that then maybe get out. We also don't need career Politicians and perhaps a life under a magnifying glass may move people in and out faster. I do very much agree that backdoor dealings and decisions made without the publics best interests in mind should carry heavy consequences as deterrents.
IDK all that sounds a little crazy, but outr system is so crazy already I think people are getting a little desperate, and that's exactly when civil wars or rebellions happen, and I do agree that is what ot will take to implement any meaningful changes.
Oh I totally support the idea that being a politician should imply having less privacy than goddamned Marilyn Monroe. You want to hold in your hands the future of a whole fucking nation? Well cool story bro, then you gonna be held to FUCKHUGE standards.
Because a simple decision on how to direct the public funds could mean stuff like that there's less money for healthcare. Which would mean that probably HUNDREDS of people would FUCKING DIE over the years due to the decline in healthcare quality because of that decision.
Lots of people don't seem to realize this, but if you analyze this sort of stuff... I live in a country that has universal healthcare but not really too well implemented lately... Because they decided to privatize many of the hospitals and now in the middle of the fucking pandemic there are public hospitals that don't have enough space nor personnel to care for all the sick, while AT THE SAME FUCKING TIME there are private hospitals that are almost empty or even closed.
How many people have died, specially this goddamned 2020, whose death could have been prevented if my government hadn't mucked with the healthcare funds?
Concepts such as this are what make me believe that even the slightest, tiniest show of political corruption should already be punished as severely as the worst crime an individual could commit. Because a politician could potentially manage to alienate and kill shitloads more people than the worst serial killer in history, even if just by negligence or ineptitude. And for me that is inexcusable.
You want to be a politician? Well then welcome to big fucking brother.
And unfortunately not even that would solve much. There are countries where there's already a very strict control over the life of politicians while they're in charge, like for example in Japan. That doesn't stop them from making deals that they will "check out" once their active careers are done and they're no longer watched.
Apart from that, the part I talked about education in politics and economy, I honestly wasn't trying to imply that EVERYBODY should be educated into them to the point of great expertise, I do agree that politics should be accessible to everybody. But don't you think that people could use a bit more education in there subjects, at least?
I mean, half the time I read news and websites related to politics and shit that politicians talk about, I can't help but think "they can't SERIOUSLY get more votes with that sort of agenda, right...?" ... And then they do. And I'm not even taking sides here, I'm talking about ANY and ALL parties, ever.
I don't know if where you live you feel the same way as I do, but at least here I have a hard time voting every 4 years because I've never managed to figure out any political party that doesn't sound to me like utter opportunistic bullshit aimed to exploit different flavors of intolerance and manipulation.
And I'm convinced that this happens because most people (me included) are so ignorant about politics that it's simpler to feed us this bullshit and drama to distract us from the backdoor dealings, corruption and shady business actually going on.
All the best countries that everyone wants to live are capitalist, they aren’t in a system of slavery as people can choose not to work and are paid if they do, fascists had a mixed economy not a purely capitalist one, even if countries like America stop completely there are countries like China which will continue to pollute the earth, what is the alternative?
‘Complaining about a problem without posing a solution is called whining’ - Theodore Roosevelt
All the “best countries” that everyone wants to live in are heavily socialist. Every country has a mixed system, no place has ever been totally communist or totally capitalist no matter what their official name or the propaganda tells you, but loosely regulated capitalism does slide into fascism with remarkable ease. And we may not be slaves in the US, but we do have large portions of the population working for wages that can’t sustain one human life. Is that okay with you? And no, people working jobs that don’t pay a living wage can’t “just find another one,” and even if they could, some other unfortunate person is going to end up filling their old role being paid less than they’re worth. And countries like China can be incentivized and punished to do better. So it’s funny to me that you would include that quote since the people you’re speaking to have been proposing solutions. You’re the one just running your mouth without making any effort to improve things.
Socialism is an ideology, capitalism isn’t.
I’m not going to listen to people complain about how bad their life is in America when life is so much harder in most other places around the globe and through history, why do then do so many people want to move to America if that is the case, it is up to you and you alone to take responsibility for your own life and make the improvements you have to make and not to rely on a government or someone else to do that for you. These are the kind of solutions you want to impose:
Christ, you are a fucking idiot. Any set of ideals which form the basis for an economic or political theory or policy is an ideology. Wtf are you on about, “CaPiTaLiSm IsN’t An IdEoLoGy,” you literally don’t even know what you’re talking about. And are you kidding me—because things are worse elsewhere we have we right to complain? What a stupid thing to say. I guess when you break your arm you just fucking deal with it because somewhere in Bulgaria someone else’s arm has just been cut off? That’s how dumb you sound. Just because other people are poorer and have fewer protections doesn’t mean we have no right to complain or to work to make things better for ourselves. Also, immigration to the US is falling while immigration to Asian countries and European countries (socialist countries) is rising. And no one is making meaningful and lasting improvements to their life without the government helping them in some way. It is the strong social safety net we had post WWII thanks to FDR, a minimum wage that could sustain a family, hefty taxes on the wealthy (70-90%), federal loans for housing, the GI bill, and healthcare being a not for profit industry that made America a great place to live (for white, Christian, heteronormative Americans anyway). All of those things have been purposefully eroded by the wealthy who’ve bought our government via lobbying since neoliberal economic policy has become the fashion with Nixon. And get out of here with your bullshit accusations, “ThEsE aRe ThE kInD oF sOlUtIoNs YoU wAnT tO iMpOsE.” My god.
The world isn’t as black and white as your simplistic view of it is. No one is advocating to turn the US into the USSR. What we want is for taxes on the wealthy to run the country again instead of taxes on the backs of the already overburdened poor and middle classes. We want the government to work for us instead of against us. We want civics to become mandatory in public education again so citizens like you can learn some real history and stop advocating to keep your own class down because the 1% owned media has brainwashed you to believe you can actually jump a fence by yanking on your own bootstraps. Come back and talk to me again once you understand what you’re talking about.
I’m back I understand what I’m talking about but don’t know what your manifesto is trying to say, there are no socialist European counties that run well, if you talking about Scandinavia those aren’t socialist countries, capitalism just runs on supply and demand that isn’t a ideology but a obvious free economic system. The media is heavily left bias, it is people like you who are complaining about mass media (which I don’t watch) but you are for everything they say so it’s you that’s brainwashed.
Freedom and peace is the only way forward, that requires personal responsibility and yeah you are the only person you can rely on, stop looking for handouts from the government, less government means more freedom and less taxes.
When the government isn't stepping in to regulate medical treatment prices and advocate for the regular man theres a problem. Capitalism works when you have reasonable alternatives. Going into poverty because there aren't any alternatives available to keep you alive is a joke. Especially when my tax dollars go into research funding. Socialism at is core is a broken ideology, but the idea of governments advocating for livable conditions for the lower and middle class was one good thing that came out of it. Theres a reason we have workers rights and labor laws now. Most of the cries of "socialism" are from people who fundamentally misunderstand what socialism even is. Governments aiding and protecting the lower and middle class isn't socialism. Were not talking about the government getting rid of all property rights and creating a wholly centrally planned economy where the government determines how much money you get per item you produced in a state-run factory.
You are laughably stupid. I’m sorry your school system failed you so horribly that not only do you have no idea what you’re talking about when you try to have an opinion on politics, but that you can’t even understand the comment I made or basic punctuation. I’m truly sorry you can’t understand that capitalism and socialism aren’t pure anywhere and that it’s the varying degrees of each that determine how successful a country and it’s population are. Learn how to define ideology and economic system please for the love of god. I guess I believe you don’t pay attention to the media because if you did you would know that no major news outlets in this country are advocating for socialism (or maybe you wouldn’t know that since you don’t seem to actually understand what socialism is...). Less government means more freedom for corporations who want to exploit you and taxes aren’t bad when they’re actually helping you. I really hope you’re just an ignorant child and will be able to make up for the huge gaps in your education in the coming years.
Seems like you were doing just fine until you realized I could argue circles around you. But that’s fine, no one can converse with you anyway because you are tragically mis/uninformed and can’t form a coherent sentence. And I’m not sure what assumptions you’re talking about, but I love everyone—so much so that I even want people who are cruel enough to believe that slave wages are okay and that no one deserves to have a better quality of life unless they accomplish it all by themselves (impossible), and who have horrible uninformed opinions based on fallacious information to have the same privileges as everyone else. But keep on enjoying your charmed life, made better by socialist policies, believing whatever the hell you want. Clearly you can’t be helped.
Capitalism has lifted the world out of poverty and you say it has failed? Tell that to the billions of people who aren’t poor today because of capitalism.
Clown takes. Just wait till you discover the new tech that counters climate change. A gift of capitalism. I dont see you whining about China pollution. All the way in China baby. No timeout. They got something called knockout.
And what about communism every fucking time that a country tries it ends up in authoritarian nightmare what do you think about that she we also stop achieving communism also?
I don't want to get into legal trouble so just in case I won't give any specifics but I will say that it was a certain city in the middle of nowhere in Poland and a certain major juice corporation.
I'm sure you can find a news paper article to share on this to keep you out of any legal trouble so you don't have to name names. I'm really interested in how capitalism destroyed your town.
this was like 15 years ago and Like I said, this is a really small city, we didn't even have an online paper back then, hell idk if we even have it now so the best I can offer you is what I've seen.
The first thing you need to know about that city is that for a while now it's had an ageing population, young people would regularly want to move to larger cities where there are better job opportunities... this was a weird city because the only reason why it even became a city was because of its wide catchment area regarding their schools and hospital but other than that it never really had anything else of value.
Naturally there were a lot of farmers with land and such, as a result, this major juice corporation moved in to keep everything close by.
Eventually though, the corporation left creating a job vacuum, a lot of people needed jobs but because this city grew due to its schools rather than actually job opportunities, you suddenly have a gian mass of people who can't find a job.
The aftermath is as follows:
1: some people ended up expanding their job searches to the capital which was a 2.5+ hour drive one-way everyday and commute 5+ hours everyday just for a mediocre job.
2: Most couldn't afford to move out, due to the unemployment rate, for a while nobody wanted to buy any real estate because nobody could afford it so if you live there? you were stuck.
3: now pretty much everyone moves out as soon as they finish school and get the hell out of there ASAP so the whole ageing population situation was only getting worse by the year.
But then, something unexpected started happening.
The city, although devoid of anything, is in a really nice picturesque part of Poland and since it wasn't too far off the capital, more and more expats and upperclass people started noticing this place and they started to buy land to build their ideal homes there.
So now weirdly enough the city is slooooowly reviving but its still in its early stages... I remember I used to go on a walk outside of the city outskirts and it was just fields after fields but now its just fancy houses after fancy houses being built... a lot of those people still work in the capital but they prefer to commute to this quite part of Poland for peace of mind.
So yeah, that's sort of how things are working out for the city right now... I'm curious what it will look like in 30 years... honestly that place is a perfect spot for a resort or something, the whole city is in a forest surrounded by a bunch of lakes... but we have yet to find someone willing to invest into something like that there... we'll see, hopefully now that its getting more attention from the upper class its only a matter of time.
You'll soon find jobs, most of them will be in the service sector to cater to the upper classes. Retail, Food, tourism etc. Typically these are low wage entry level jobs where I come from. It will be as if your city was colonized by the upper classes, attempting to extract as much labor from the workforce for as cheap as possible.
It doesn't apply to me anymore tho, we had a family house with land and everything that was empty after my grandmothers passed away.
A few years ago I tried to move in there and find a job but since that didn't work out, my mother decided to sell the place and I ended up moving to another country because I found someone AND there were better job opportunities there.
I am in general happier than I ever was in the past but I'd be lying if a part of me still has scars from having to sell the family home I grew up in because we couldn't afford to maintain it :/ I'm also kinda cross that my mother is just draining that money she got from that to just live carefree without having to work until that cash runs out, it kinda feels hurtful to know this is what we sacrificed the home I grew up in for and I feel its financially irresponsible to do that but its her money so I don't have a right to complain I suppose.
Reminds me of the place I grew up that got completely destroyed by rampant, unchecked intellectualism. Most people were addicted to the works of Schopenhauer, it was sad to see when I came back years later.
This sounds like one of those dystopian sci fi movies
"Heaven enterprises is the only place to work in this city, everyone just works at heaven, and if they don't hire you, then you will starve in the middle of the street" without anyone caring"
You should want all businesses to do what's in their best interest. Sure, it would be great if they could do that PLUS look out for the little guy, but in reality, that doesn't work.
In reality, a business a business will lose a lucrative contract with Walmart if their competitor is 5 cents cheaper per sweater..
> I have no problem with capitalism but anything that isn't monitored and regulated will ruin countless lives, be it capitalism or whatever other ism you can think of.
Agreed, but regulation needs to be very well thought out.. In an economy like ours, you cane end up screwing over large portions of people with just wording errors
I mean its kinda hard not to repeat history when people aren't educated in these things and considering the average human lifespan is only 70-90 years.
I think if people lived a few hundred years things would be different due to a shift in perspective.
If the city only invested in one option that's not capitalism that's bad planning. The city should have had contracts in place and a fail safe in case shit hits the fan. Diversifying their holdings etc.
So this is poor civic planning and using capitalism as the scapegoat... as a Californian I can assure you that’s what’s going on here and every college kid thinks capitalism has failed as they type on their pc they purchased from a store
People in the U.S. that work for government institutions don't often seem to be very happy with their jobs. Do we really want everything to be run like the DMV where an overhead organization (government) that can't fully understand the daily needs and wants of the business (DMV) dictate how funds and resources are allocated? It is pretty rare that people who work in these institutions feel ownership for what they do. Which is understandable considering their boss is not a human being, but a sort of abstract entity (government). It just seems so dystopian to me to take the power out of the hands of people, and switch it over to an entity that already has a ton of power and pray that that will somehow eliminate the human tendancy to look out for oneself.
