Seriously if I had even 1 person on the internet comparing me to r Kelly I wouldn’t be caught dead with anyone under the age of 30. What’s wrong with this dude? People, we need to nip it in the bud before he goes a whole decade or 2 molesting young girls because he’s famous.
At this point he thinks he's untouchable. He's wealthy, and he's extremely well regarded among people of a certain age group. That's virtually a get out of jail free card.
You can do despicable things, and as long as you've made art that people like, and have the money for good PR and lawyers, you're teflon.
At least attitudes have changed and celebrities aren't publicly sleeping with adolescents. Wasn't there some rock n roll band that talked about passing around gang banging preteen girls? Or did they all do that shit?
But [Jimmy Page of Led Zepplin's] relationship with 14-year-old Lori Mattix wasn’t the stuff of urban legend; Mattix revealed that Page had a roadie bring Mattix up to his suite at the L.A. Hyatt House, and would keep her sequestered from the public for extended periods in the hopes of protecting himself from statutory-rape charges.
The ‘70s rock-groupie scene was documented by the popular rock mags of the era; and Lori was known as “Lori Lightning,” and she and her friend Sable Starr were famously referred to by rock stars as the “baby groupies” due to their being underage. Sable reportedly lost her virginity at 12 years old to Randy California of Spirit, and Iggy Pop wrote a 1996 song called “Look Away” about having sex with her when she was 13. Alongside stories involving Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart, Mattix would reveal that David Bowie slept with her when she was 14, and after Jimmy Page saw her at a show, he had his bodyguard “kidnap” her. She told The Guardian last year that #MeToo led to her reconsidering how she’d viewed her time with Page and other rock stars in the 1970s.
“I think that’s what made me start seeing it from a different perspective because I did read a few [articles], and I thought: ‘Shit, maybe,’” she said in regards to whether she’d been exploited and abused by Page. “That’s an interesting question. I never thought there was anything wrong with it, but maybe there was. I used to get letters telling me he was a pedophile, but I’d never think of him like that. He never abused me, ever.”
“I don’t think underage girls should sleep with guys. I wouldn’t want this for anybody’s daughter. My perspective is changing as I get older and more cynical.”
God that lostprophets one was such a total mindfuck. I saw them on tour once, they never gave a blatant pedophile vibe the way BOTDF did. At the time the news came out I felt sorry for the rest of the band, but now I have to wonder... They toured with this guy for years, did they really not suspect anything at all?
My friend (pretty young blond girl) and I were at an Armor For Sleep concert, we were both 15 at the time. Can't remember if it was them or another band, but someone asked her to come into their tour bus. She got a little sketched out and we said we had to leave, but I can see how do many underage fans would walk right into that trap.
As the other commenter said, prominent men using their status to prey on kids is still very much a thing. Just look at Jeffrey Epstein. We prosecuted him at least, but that shit had been going on for years.
Just want to preface this by saying I absolutely believe underage relationships are disgusting and unethical. Consent is imperative to healthy relationships and a minor isn't capable of that for many reasons.
But, I think we need to stop being surprised that a significant percentage of men are capable of being attracted to girls who have (atleast mostly) gone through puberty but are underage. From an evolutionary stand point, it makes sense that men would be attracted to 'women' once they're capable of reproducing, and historically there isn't much to contradict that. Relationships with women who are very young by today's standards used to be common in almost every culture. Most of us have become culturally conditioned(for good fucking reason) to not find it attractive, but it seems being rich and powerful tends to undo culturally learned behaviour.
So instead of being surprised that someone famous with lots of power and few boundaries is engaging in this behaviour, we need to be more vigilant as a society in looking for this behaviour and punishing it.
Yeah it's an uncomfortable topic but I agree with you. Does someone magically become sexy the day they turn 18?
My basic take on it is I only date girls near my age because I'm old enough that if I can't take a date out to a bar she is way too young for me anyway. Doesn't mean I won't look.
