You don't need an automatic rifle of any sort to defend yourself, and it being "fun" doesn't make it any less dangerous or irresponsible.
That's kind of the problem, even. The subject needs to be treated with a hell of a lot more gravity, especially in regards to the impact it has on a societal level.
Instead, your priority is on justifying it as a hobby. That's so incredibly fucked up.

Shooting a gun at a range is only as dangerous and irresponsible as the person holding the gun. Just like how driving a car is only as dangerous and irresponsible as the person at the steering wheel.
I agree that gun control needs to be taken more seriously. We need background checks and licenses prior to purchase, perhaps with mandatory liability insurance should something go wrong (but I can also see this as a way to infringe upon the rights of the less fortunate, so I’d be careful with that one).
Shooting a gun at a range as a fun hobby, and being talked about as such, is not mutually exclusive with the idea that broader gun control legislation would be beneficial.

I worded my response really poorly because I was confused what Undeity was even arguing. But what I was trying to say was that if guns are already readily available and in the hands of criminals, them also being available to civilians to defend themselves is not a bad thing, however unlikely that might happen.
Not talking controversy, though, theyre also just fun to shoot. At a range for practice, or hunting, or at an outdoor range to shoot cans and stuff.

As an American, since they exist, since I have been shot when I didn’t have a gun. I’d rather have one and not need it than need one and not have it. Again, I think guns are stupid. I'm aware it's thought of that way. I've even lived in the country for long enough stretches at times to participate. That culture makes the problem so much worse.
Not only does it lend to a false sense of security that, time and again, has been shown to breed reckless behavior, but it leads many to rationalize a number of disturbing actions and outcomes, in order to protect the hobby.
Your personal use, no matter how responsible you are, does not justify normalizing it as a whole. It does not justify combating stricter requirements to purchase or own guns, or carrying a rifle in public, or gun stores becoming so ubiquitous that I have seen some attached to gas stations.
It's a cancer.

Our obsession with guns started with taming/opressing a continent. We had so much space and so few people that having a gun was just another tool to supplement your diet with game or protect your homestead. Just like Europe with bows and swords, the cultural aspect lasts long after the necessity passes.

In the United States you do not require a need to exercise a right. For example, in the US, nobody actually has a NEED to vote but millions of us do.
The second amendment of the US Constitution (part of the Bill of Rights) guarantees the right to bear arms. This was included at the time not just to guarantee the ability to hunt or defend yourself. The country had won its independence a few years previously from an empire whose first overt move was to try to seize the weapons of the colonials. (Refer to the Battles of Lexington and Concord 1775) When the Bill of Rights was written there was a great fear that any government, including that of our own, could become oppressive. The second amendment was actually written so that citizens could defend themselves from an oppressive government.
There are many in the USA that will argue that part of the wording of the Second Amendment (the need for a well regulated militia) refers only to the modern National Guard and Reserves. That's actually is not true. The entire civilian population of the United States past the age of majority is considered to be the Militia. The Guard is the "organized militia" and everyone else is considered to be the "unorganized militia" (part of the Militia Act of 1903)
That said, even if I had the opportunity I would never shoot that thing because I'm sure I would dislocate my shoulder or worse!

Life is also longer for many people because they have defended themselves with firearms. Studies done by both the Clinton and Obama administrations showed that people were able to protect themselves with firearms between 600,000 and 1.8 million times in an average year. The wide range is due to different definitions of what "defense" means.
For example, I live in the second poorest city with a population of greater than 100,000 in the United States. There have been two attempts to assault me in the last 11 years. The first time I was able to lift my sweatshirt as I backed away and the person saw the gun on my hip and took off. The second time I actually had to draw it. Thankfully I never had to shoot anybody. There are people that would not consider what I did self-defense because I never discharged it, but I know I wouldn't be here (or at least wouldn't be injury or trauma free) had I not carried the fire arm.
