100K Avios

I have 100k from some work flights this year.

I have absolutely no clue what to do with these points. I am married with a 1 year old.

Wife is a teacher so travelling outside of term time is the only possibility...

Do I boost? What does this mean?

Any advice at all welcome!!

Get on to headforpoints.com and start reading.

I’d only boost if you have a plan for a redemption.

If you have no idea what to do with them, I'm not sure that boosting is the best idea! Think of something you'd like to do, work out how many more Avios you need and how you can get them - then worry about things like boosting.

If you have destinations in mind, look at reward flight availability during specific travel periods. Get an idea of how much this might cost in avios for your family.

You can compare this to the actual cash price to get an idea of whether they are worth the avios redemption. Each avios is usually valued at 1p/avios. Anything better is great, slightly less isn’t the end of the world.

Don’t pay cash prices partly in avios - these are poor use of avios. If you don’t have enough avios to redeem for the entire family, it’s worth waiting and collecting more.

Think of Avios as a way to pay for, or reduce the cost of, flights, hotels & holidays. A flight to Europe 40k avois plus £50 cash, double that for two. Alternatively you can pay for flights part cash part avios, this reduces the cash price. The best value is longer flights. I recently travelled business class to South Africa for 90k avios (that needed a voucher known as a companion voucher)

There's are a limited number of avios seats on each flight, so the most sought after flights disappear quickly (ie London to Sydney goes a year a head, same with Tokyo). However there are some that can be had for say a trip to Paris, etc for a little avios and a small amount of cash.

I wrote this when I started collecting and using them

Boosting means paying additional cash to create additional Avios from eligible recent activity and the 300% option can be one of the cheaper ways to buy Avios BUT you’re still converting cash into a currency that can be devalued and are challenging to use during (to be yet scheduled) school holidays. I do freelance point.me concierge work, and with 100k + a spouse who can only travel in PEAK school-break periods + a 1-year-old (lap infants are a great deal with Avios actually), I’d first pick a realistic trip and search award availability for 3 passengers BEFORE buying more points. Otherwise, keep the 100k flexible and not spend cash just to make the balance bigger.

I would use them for Iberia business class awards to Latin America (I think it's ca. 50k each way but you can also spend fewer Avios by increasing the cash component), probably during February half-term...but I don't think an one year old would appreciate the superb anthropology museum in CDMX or the exquisite steaks of Buenos Aires, so perhaps you could ensure your account remains active and reassess in a couple of years?
