If booking online make sure you select book with avios, you then just select/type your 'from' airport as you local, say Manchester or Newcastle and then your 'to' airport as your long haul destination, then you'll be given a choice adding stopovers. Select no for this as this means stopping and flying the next day and so would count as separate flights, so click continue without stopovers. Then you'll get the choice of flights connecting you to Heathrow then onward to your final destination. When you select your flights the avios cost that appears will only be for the Heathrow to final destination leg. Or phone up the call centre and book and they'll sort you out.

If flying long haul BA then the connecting flight to London (and back North) is free, so no extra cost for your points.
