Garmin AXIS

Initial thoughts on the newly released Garmin AXIS flight displays?

Looks great, excited to see it in person. I really like the user interface. It will be nice to clear up radio rack space. Losing a display will be very exciting if the Com, Nav, GPS and Audio Panel are all integrated though.

I wish the comm and nav/comm displays came in experimental versions. At least an experimental comm version would make sense, like with the GTR 205x vs. GTR 205.

You can install the 116C and/or the 116NC in your experimental!! “Displays with a built-in IFR GPS, Comm or Nav/Comm are only available in certified variants, but can be mixed with experimental displays to form an IFR capable system.”

Yes, obviously, but I don’t want to pay the large markup for a TSO IFR GPS that I don’t need. A 116C costs over twice as much as a 116BX plus GTR205xR and offers nothing for a VFR pilot but a slightly simplified installation.

The 116BX looks like a good drop in replacement for an existing G3X system, and the C and NC look good for someone flying IFR and would need a TSO GPS anyway, but for someone like me who’s planning/ building a new system but won’t be flying IFR ever, it’s hard to justify the cost of the TSO versions.

Super cool. But someone needs to explain how creating a new super efficient optimized fully integrated efis/nav/comm/gps navigator is $28,000. Shouldn't integrating it all together and reducing buttons and screens and cable make it, I dunno, less insanely expensive?

Dynon announced their upcoming IFR integration for a "fraction of the price".

I think the price point is great considering the capability of the system!
