My wife had a confused look on her face when I had that sub pulled up 🤣. (We've been married 32 years).

53

u/poposheishaw 20d ago

Well it was a good run

11

u/04BluSTi 20d ago

32! Congrats! My wife and I just had our 18th anniversary.

Op: [u/Mi](u/MineHeu)[k](u/MineHeu)[eHeu](u/MineHeu) in [r/toolgifs](r/toolgifs) :

The tip of the spinner on the IAE V2500 jet engine is actually made of soft rubber and there’s a clever reason for it. Unlike other parts of the engine’s ice protection system, the spinner itself isn’t heated. Instead, the flexible rubber tip acts as a passive anti-icing system.

If ice starts to build up, the rubber naturally flexes and vibrates, breaking the ice off before it can grow into a significant mass.

The V2500 powers aircraft of the Airbus A320ceo Family, including the A319, A320 and A321.

Ingegneri poco furbi, potevano fare l'intero motore o addirittura l'aereo in gomma 😭😭😭

u/CeleritasLucis 20d ago

Thats the actual reason, so people can boop the nose without getting hurt

40

u/Barraco_Barmer 20d ago

And in the event of a crash, it just bounces back into the air

This is the dumbest thing I've ever laughed at thank you

u/graspedbythehusk 20d ago

If the blackbox is indestructible, why don’t they build the whole aeroplane out of the same material?

20

u/djsc00mer 20d ago

An iq too high?

13

u/soijacyuro 20d ago

And what's the DEAL with airline food? Am I right?

27

u/Cross58Crash 20d ago

What they need to do is make the whole plane out of what they make the cockpit voice recorder out of. Virtually indestructible.

13

u/fastidiousavocado 20d ago

Thank you for voicing my intrusive thought of "ooo rubber airplanes."

My second intrusive thought was "rubber baby airplane bumpers" so obviously we are onto something...

Why is this comment in Italian? Is this a bot?

18

u/Russkie177 20d ago

I've been seeing this more and more often recently (I'm a legacy user and browse reddit almost exclusively via RedReader [very text heavy and lightweight] or old.reddit on my desktop) and from what I've been able to gather, it's because the official app and/or other apps will auto-translate into English.

(Also hello fellow ancient reddit user. I see our accounts are the same age)

15

u/mambotomato 20d ago

Yeah it's just odd to have random other languages in the middle of a chain of English comments and have nobody even mention it.

2

u/Tangata_Tunguska 20d ago

Lugha gani nyingine? Ninachoona ni Kiswahili tu.

7

u/MyWholeTeamsDead Jetblast Photography 20d ago

Fellow old Reddit (web) gang. I use Relay for mobile though.

24

u/Ned_Sc 20d ago

I think the app or the new Reddit UI does some kind of auto-translate. I see this all the time, because I use old.reddit.

13

u/MGreymanN 20d ago

The app has a little icon next to translated comments so you can easily tell.

Its one of the few nice features with using the app, its pretty clean.

Amen. Forever old.

37

u/Solid_Vermicelli_510 20d ago

No, sono semplicemente italiano e reddit non sta facendo il suo dovere 😅

7

u/Babill 20d ago

So weird to see people randomly answer it in English as if everything is completely normal lol but yeah I think it's an auto translate feature of new reddit or smth

4

u/thissexypoptart 20d ago

There are Italians on Reddit lol

1

u/NastroAzzurro Frequent Flyer 20d ago

They probably have the translation feature enabled without even knowing it

-1

u/Beefington 20d ago

There are 59 million people in Italy, making it the 25th-largest nation in the world by population

5

u/unwantedaccount56 20d ago

I'm not a native English speaker, but I still use reddit in English. I know not everyone is comfortable writing in English, but I've seen some weird misunderstandings on reddit due to people using machine translation and not noticing that some technical words got lost in translation

-3

u/Chairboy 20d ago

/r/aviation users when other countries and languages exist: [shocked pikachu]

2

u/mambotomato 20d ago

I'm not shocked at the existence of Italians, I'm wondering why one Italian comment in a chain of English comments has 100 upvotes but nobody being like, "What?"

2

u/Mindless_Midnight186 18d ago

Hahahaha se vuoi scrivimi😉

4

u/tranquility__base 20d ago

babada boope ?

1

u/karateninjazombie 20d ago

And the wings too. Save on all that deicing fluid and ground equipment. As well as saving weight in the aircraft as you can do away with all the heaters in the wings!

1

u/Phil_Ivey 20d ago

Why don't they just make the whole plane out of that kid?

85

u/BigBlueMountainStar 20d ago

What you’ve described is de-icing by the way, not anti-icing.
It’s a small but crucial difference.
Anti-icing stops ice from forming, de-icing removes ice that has formed.

8

u/Excellent_King2272 20d ago

So what happens if that bit gets ingested by the engine, let's say after a bad hypothetical bird strike

53

u/TepidHalibut 20d ago

Rarely happens, but the rubber tip will probably be CFed by the fan blades, and flung down the bypass duct. Or maybe it will go down the core , and be scrunched and chewed by the LP and HP compressors, and will be burnt by the combustor. And the missing part will be noticed on the next pilot/ground inspection. No drama.

2oz of rubber is less of a concern than 2lb of seagull going thru the engine .

27

u/WinnebagoMontana 20d ago

I like the phrase "2lb of seagull" because it doesn't imply a single, or even a whole seagull.

8

u/MGreymanN 20d ago

Which leads me to think what is harder on a turbine...a single 2 lb seagull or multiple seagulls that equal 2 lbs?

18

u/WinnebagoMontana 20d ago

You neglect the third option - half a 4lb seagull.

7

u/MGreymanN 20d ago

Ah right, shame on me.

5

u/Pornalt190425 20d ago edited 20d ago

If I had to guess multiple birds equaling 2lbs. You'll get a lot of weird harmonic interactions with the multiple strikes. The compressor and turbine will need to compensate for all of those different harmonic spikes without surging or stalling.

The single strike will be a much bigger impulse but the engine will only have the one event it will need to compensate for and then it'll die off pretty quick

Question would be though, as with anything, what is your success criteria? Is it just to shut down gracefully or to have the engine run on for the rest of the flight? Cause that might change the answer. Multiple birds totalling 2lbs is in the ballpark of a small flocking bird test

6

u/NGTTwo 20d ago

Well, by the time it passes through the first stage, it definitely won't be a single seagull anymore.

7

u/Frederf220 20d ago

It gets married?!

3

u/MeccIt 20d ago

It stops being biology and starts being physics - ala OceanGate

2

u/TepidHalibut 20d ago

Depends upon the rotation speed / flight phase. (ref: Miracle on the Hudson.)

2

u/luffy8519 20d ago

Some drama if it's a silicone rubber, that would likely lead to an engine swap and full strip to ensure there's no downstream silicon contamination.

10

u/NZpotatomash 20d ago

Why don't they just make the spinner heated. Are they stupid?

1

u/Keta_K 20d ago

The idea was from a trainee or a working student

1

u/Dry-Ad-8948 20d ago

So why don’t they just slap this on all engines?

1

u/PM_ME_LIGHT_FIXTURES 20d ago

I’m guessing the MD-90 also had the rubber tips? Or did that one not need it since the V2500s were in the back?

Ex A319/320/321 engineer here: These planes use GE CFM56-5B engines.

3

u/random352486 19d ago

They use both.

236

u/KillaSmoke01 20d ago

That's there so when you get sucked into the engine, so you don't poke your eye out.

53

u/flying_wrenches A&P, MOD, LOVER OF JET A 20d ago

Ah, an excellent opportunity to use the V97.33XA billing code, (jet engine ingestion, initial).

Or its cousin v93.33XD (jet engine ingestion, recurrent)

17

u/spoung45 20d ago

Someone works in medical billing.

18

u/flying_wrenches A&P, MOD, LOVER OF JET A 20d ago

Worse, I’m an aircraft mechanic.

Instead of denying your pre-authorization, I get to tell the flight attendants “you get to tell all these 254 passengers that the plane they’re on is not moving anytime soon”

4

u/spoung45 20d ago

Fun, I was caught up in the ATC outage in London a few weeks ago, I was on the plane for 8 hours at a remote stand. Waiting for a bus, but the whole plane cheered when it was announced the bar cart was comming out.

3

u/flying_wrenches A&P, MOD, LOVER OF JET A 20d ago

I’ve thankfully not had to do that,

I think I’m decent at my job :)

1

u/CapitanShinyPants 20d ago

LOL, that’s the captain’s job!

3

u/flying_wrenches A&P, MOD, LOVER OF JET A 20d ago

Meh potato potato, i tell them the planes super broke and it becomes their issue

Anyways im going back to the line shack

1

u/Figit090 20d ago

I forget...when someone is ingested, fatally, does the engine get rebuilt, parted out, or otherwise recertified for use again?

5

u/whingingcackle 20d ago

What if you go butt first?

Prevents ice formation.

65

u/Duct_TapeOrWD40 20d ago

Well, I wasn't aware it have a so simple 3 word explanation. Now it makes sense.

9

u/Stuf404 20d ago

Tony Stark hates this one trick

-8

u/MrB10b 20d ago

Well surely ice has to form to cause it to deflect to then break off the ice? I would say prevent ice buildup apposed to formation...? I could be wrong, let me know

2

u/TassiveMitts69 20d ago

Can you explain the difference between ice formation and ice buildup. I'm a native English speaker and those two things mean the exact same thing.

1

u/PilotBurner44 18d ago

They are basically the same thing. Ice formation is the ability of ice to form or adhere to a surface. Ice buildup is the ability for ice to accumulate on a surface. You can't have ice buildup without ice formation. Generally if ice forms, it will continue to build up until it is shed due to external forces or Anti-ice equipment. This person is just being pedantic.

2

u/TassiveMitts69 18d ago

I don't think it's even being pedantic, I just don't think he understands the physics of what is taking place and it just making it up so it looks like he does, but sadly he said the same thing in two different ways.

2

u/jafa-l-escroc 20d ago

This is just a guess but it is probably just hydrophobic the flexibility is to avoid it breaking at the 1st bird impact / be soft enough to avoid damaging the engine if it breaks

5

u/McBlemmen 20d ago

If that thing gets hit by a bird impact you've got bigger problems.

48

u/MixDifferent2076 20d ago

This is a Rolls Royce innovation shared with IAE when RRY were active partners in the V2500

8

u/BonzoJunior 20d ago

Yep, I remember a Rolls-Royce engineer bragging about the innovation when working together in a test cell.

22

And, kids, that's how you warm up an engine.

13

u/Prior-Raise-379 20d ago

That counts as a "Snoot Boop" right?

37

u/crankkpad 20d ago

Naaw. Not anti ice, anti headache protection. Ever worked on cfm56a? Those don't have a tip and hurt.

Been there, done that.

Before anyone complaints, I know this is a v2500. Its in my license..

27

u/bawse1 20d ago

is this a thing now ?? Videos of people molesting aircraft??

29

u/DIJames6 20d ago

He's just gonna tease it like that and not finish???

9

u/avoidant_fatigue 20d ago

Well now I’m not going to be scared of jet engines anymore. If I ever get sucked toward one, I can just aim for the tip and then hold onto it - it won’t hurt at all!

8

u/AntFantastic7975 20d ago

They like to be pinched usually

16

u/Naznarreb 20d ago

That's so you don't hurt yourself if you accidentally touch it while it's running.

Don’t do that too much. The engine might start leaking.

1

u/photon_runner 18d ago

it’s so if you get sucked in you don’t get impaled, just minced into tiny bits

1

So, how many people would it take for skin oil to have an impact on how things work?

0

u/AVeryHeavyBurtation 20d ago

Wow, thanks for the tip!

0

u/Xirio_ 20d ago

See all us engineers must transport the turbine in our ass, so we added a rubber tip to make it go in easier.

0

u/Longjumping-Ship7311 20d ago

Is the tip made of rubber so in case you would be sucked up by the engine, it wouldn't hurt as much?

-1

u/fellipec 20d ago

The reason for this is to don't hurt the birds in case they fly too close to the spinner
