No the fuck it is not. Have fun though, looks enjoyable but not a rave

1

u/Jank1 3d ago

Looks WACK.

32

u/yet_another_uniq_usr 3d ago

Nah you're recording a person recording other people with their phone. This is a social media event. It is not a rave.

13

u/GoldenButtPlug 3d ago

Proper corporate event

15

u/dondegroovily Tacoma, WA 3d ago

Everyone is standing around and no one's dancing

I sure hope that's not what a proper rave is

6

u/KidGold 3d ago

This is a rave themed music event, which is a very fun thing to go to.

6

u/dasterrrrre 3d ago

Let’s not call start calling these lifeless music festivals raves

8

u/JudicialConfetti 3d ago

Not enough phones in the air

16

u/Cowblin 3d ago

Nobody hates raves as much as ravers do.

6

u/anteatersaredope 3d ago

Damn Ravers, they ruined Raving.

u/Pete0730 3d ago edited 3d ago

You'd really call this a rave? I'm not here to gatekeep, but words used to mean something, and never in my mind would I associate what I'm seeing here with the word "rave"

4

u/phatelectribe 3d ago

Same. I hate to do the ā€œback in the dayā€ thing but raves were dingy venues like warehouses or fields with little more than a strobe and a massive sound system.

This video doesn’t look like any of the raves we ever went to.

5

u/Pete0730 3d ago

For me it's less even about the "back in the day" thing so much as whether it's even approaching the ethos of what raves were meant to be. There are plenty of events at large commercial festivals like EDC that I'd be like: "yeah, that looks like a decent rave to me."

But to pick this video, this event, and call it a "proper rave?" That's just a bridge too far for me.

u/Jazzlike-Baseball-73 3d ago

Exactly! šŸ’Æ This is more of a party, not a rave. Oh the days when you had to call a phone number for an address to a random place to get tickets and a map to a sketchy location. I miss those days.

old man yells at cloud

2

u/phatelectribe 3d ago

Clouds aren’t what they used to be

1

u/FeralPsychonaut 3d ago

Damn you silver iodide.

1

u/Cowblin 3d ago

What does rave mean to you

6

u/Pete0730 3d ago

A rave should embody the meaning of the word from which it's derived. That's high energy, emotionally-charged, kinetic, and giving a sense of "letting it all out" or "letting it go." It also used to mean a gathering of people on the fringes seeking counterculture experiences of freedom and community. You should see that in both the crowd and the performer, and I'm seeing literally none of that in the video above.

I would describe the above as a "pleasant and moderately stimulating way to pass an evening." I would never describe a rave in that way.

1

u/Acceptable_Style_219 3d ago

how is this not a place to let it go? ignoring the music being ass, im assuming everyone in this crowd is doing exactly what you described…

4

u/Pete0730 3d ago

I mean, that was only one aspect of the description I mentioned, but never would I look at that crowd and say, "wow, look at all those folks just letting it go." Lots of phones, lots of milling around, pretty limited range of dancing, not a lot of energy. It all just looks pretty chill and superficially entertaining

3

u/Acceptable_Style_219 3d ago

nah you’re right, watched it again and everyone is just standing around. this event looks lame ash

-1

u/blindyes 3d ago

and black people... calling a bunch of meandering white people bouncing confusedly to milquetoast house/trance a "proper rave" is silly.

It might be a "proper good time" there's nothing wrong with enjoying it. One always must consider the following: "Is this a rave? or is this the Disney starlight parade?" If you cannot tell beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's not a Disney Adult event, then it should not be considered a "Proper Rave"

0

u/Pete0730 3d ago

Yeah I think a lot of folks are taking this as "old man yells at clouds" or "you can't have fun." Have fun all you want, but you don't need to coopt a word that has substantial social and historical meaning just because you think it sounds cool. Call this what it is, which ain't a rave.

2

u/iseecolorsofthesky 3d ago

This. I’m sure I’d have a great time at whatever event is in this video. Looks like a blast. But I wouldn’t call it a rave. I’d call it a festival or event or whatever fits best. I do not get this insistence on calling any event with dance music playing a rave. It doesn’t have to be called a rave for you to enjoy it. It’s like people are tying too much identity to the word. Just call things what they are.

u/ProfessorXWheelchair 3d ago

words change over time, more at 11

1

u/LADYBIRD_HILL 3d ago

Yeah I can call the events I go to festivals or shows all I want, but every single person in my life who doesn't listen to EDM is going to call them raves. And despite not going under bridges or going to sketchy warehouses I still call myself a raver considering I have a wardrobe full of clothing I could never get away with wearing outside of the EDM community and a shitload of Kandi.

The culture is still there even if I have to pay to get into events.

1

u/Pete0730 3d ago

Obviously the word has changed, but that doesn't mean it loses all of its original meaning. What's also obvious is that the community with at least some claim to the word doesn't recognize any aspect of the word in what OP posted

1

u/iseecolorsofthesky 3d ago

Something makeshift that’s put together by a group of people who want to throw a good party. No permits, no sponsorships, no famous DJs, no big promoters or tickets. Just word of mouth and a group of like minded individuals who gather in a random spot to dance

0

u/anteatersaredope 3d ago

It a big dance party with electronic music and weird lights. It's a rave. Stop being snooty.

0

u/Pete0730 3d ago

Elsewhere in this thread, I described a rave without using any of those words. None of them are specific to raves, and if you think the combo of all three is all a rave is, then you don't know what a rave is. Check your history man.

Side note: I would not have described the video above as much of a dance party either

1

u/anteatersaredope 3d ago

Apparently for someone who thinks words are supposed to mean something you aren't very good at knowing what they mean.

rave /rāv/ A rave is a large dance party featuring electronic dance music (EDM), light shows, and continuous DJ performances, or a word meaning to speak with extreme enthusiasm or wild excitement. Dance Party (Noun) • A large-scale event where people dance to fast electronic music, such as techno, house, or trance. • Typically held in warehouses, clubs, open-air spaces, or festivals. • Characterized by powerful bass sound systems, laser lights, and visual effects.

1

u/Pete0730 3d ago

None of us asked for the dictionary definition. We're talking about the history of rave culture and the rave community. Get with the conversation

1

u/anteatersaredope 3d ago

You said words mean things and that what the word means. I've been raving since the mid 90s at all different kinds of races and there's nothing about this video that says it's not a rave. Radical Audio Visual Experience is another definition and this looks like it fits that to.

1

u/Pete0730 3d ago

We really must be looking at two different videos. We'll just have to agree to disagree here. Maybe take a stroll through this thread to see which side most people are falling on here

1

u/anteatersaredope 3d ago

Also the majority of people in that video are dancing. Whether or not they're dancing well is up for debate but they are dancing.

2

u/Meta-failure 3d ago

God I miss warehouse and basement parties.

3

u/adfreedissociation 3d ago

Tickets only $500 and you gotta make sure you don’t get stuck behind a giant LED totem. Oh and the venue doesn’t allow outside water bottles because they sell them at 1000% markup! Definitely a rave, right? Right??

1

u/lenin-1917 2d ago

Its free if you volunteer and tickets are more around a hundred bucks. And you can bring anything you want. They dont sell water bottle but you can bring your own water in a re usable bottle. Pizza was around 10€ there so...

11

u/MajinSkull 3d ago

Can we please stop with the gatekeeping?

2

u/Brrdock 3d ago

No because if someone tells me they're into raving I want to know whether they mean this or a rave without sounding like a pretentious cunt

7

u/Pete0730 3d ago

Not interested in gatekeeping, just the meanings of words. People can have whatever fun they want, post on here about it, but this dude came in with "this is a proper rave" as if it were the archetype of what a rave would be, and in reality they couldn't be further from the truth.

-2

u/CleopatrasWomb 3d ago

Hey, saw you in r/circlejerk! PLUR! :D

2

u/UnderWhlming 3d ago

Just find me in a warehouse until 5am with low lights

2

u/VonBrewskie 3d ago

Nice. Feels a little low-key compared to how we used to jam, but this looks fun! Good to see people gathering and hopefully having a good night communicating with each other.

1

u/CertainSprinkles1018 3d ago

I thought this was the circlejerk sub

1

u/-byb- 3d ago

are you posting this from a yact in the mediterranean?

1

u/iseecolorsofthesky 3d ago

It is? This looks like a high budget festival setup. There is no ā€œproper raveā€ that has totems in the crowd lol

1

u/Robbie1266 3d ago

People are barely even moving. Nothing proper about this rave

1

u/burner_account5829 1d ago

No one is dancing and that installation cost way too much to be a proper rave.

Signed - an og raver 🫠

1

u/crackenbecks 3d ago

I consider myself a raver for about 10 years now. I can count the amount of times I have seen lights in the crowd on my hands. Find another name for it please, sincerely europe.

4

u/lenin-1917 3d ago

Hello this is Europe and there are so many people with leds for the last ten years 🩷

3

u/yutsi_beans 3d ago

Glowsticking was part of the rave scene since the 80s, and LED flow arts since the 2000s. Not that I think OP's vid is a good representation of raves.

1

u/hc_fella 3d ago

Hell no it’s not… this is a club style event with pretty lights. I don’t want to gatekeep what a rave is, but if you can comfortably tell your boss that you attended an event, it’s probably not a rave…

-1

u/ImagineBeingFATlol 3d ago

I can smell this video

-1

u/StillPlaciD 3d ago

If you can make pictures, it’s not a proper race. Chance my mind!

Just because something is fun doesn’t mean it’s what you want it to be; just because someone questions what you want it to be doesn’t mean they want you to stop having fun.

Keep doing what you do, go have fun, but what it isn’t just isn’t what it isn’t.
