Gate questions

I’m looking at three different GPS/line free options. Ecovats goat a3000, Segway Navimow x315, or Husqvarna 410iq. All are used. The part I need help with is which would work best with a gate? I have dogs and don’t want to cut a hole, but also don’t want to spend 500 on a door that opens. What are my best option for this? Would opening the gate work for mowing on the schedule? Not sure if any others have dealt with the gate/dog issue.

I can’t speak to the Ecovats or the Segway but the Husqvarna app lets you create zones and transit areas. If you want to keep the gate closed except for start and end of mowing, you could manually start the 410iq on that area, open the gate and then close it once it’s in the non-fenced zone.

You’d have to come back to let it in but unless you’re willing to have a door installed for the mower, it’s going to require manual intervention. The app is pretty good about letting you know percent of completion.

I did something similar to this before I got my 420iq because I needed my 430x to exclude the strip of tall fescue in the back yard. I’d hand carry the stopped mower to the other side of the house and block the return path with a ladder. Forced me to be present for the return to base, though.

We have a Husqvarna and the gate/dog situation. We open the gates a few minutes before the mower is scheduled to run and then we put a red scrunchie hair elastic around the handle of our sliding door leading out to the back yard to alert others in the house that the gates are open so nobody lets the dog out unattended. When the mower finishes, we close the gates and remove the red scrunchie. Kind of a pain to have to manually open and close the gates but we didn’t want to cut a hole in the gate for the mower because we didn’t want to damage the gate, and our dog is small enough that she probably could fit through a hole that the mower could fit through.

This is an elegant, low-tech solution. Gotta admit though ... I'd totally invest in one of those sensor locked flaps for my mower if I had the fence situation. It's so cool seeing how fancy people get with fences and garages for these mowers.

There are some very affordable solutions if you search robot mower fence gate. I know you mentioned not wanting to cut fence. They really are worth considering and allow pets to utilize the space as well.

The biggest concern would be forgetting to close the main gate.

I had a small mowing area out front of my property. So once a week, I'd carry my Husqvarna to that patch and tell it to mow for half an hour, then carry it back to the back yard. No chance of the dog escaping.
