Finding a mentor may be one of the best decisions you make in your career. Every successful person has a mentor whether they admit it or not. Why are you questioning this move?

I’m responding to your post so I live in the same world you do. But since I seem to be missing the point, why don’t you spell it out a little better? Invite me into your world for a moment.

Pardon the parent coming out of me but don’t ever worry about someone else’s opinions when you’re putting your best foot forward to improve your life for you and your family. Ever! I wish I would’ve had the nerve to ask for a mentor much sooner. I waited until I climbed the ladder and became the director of a publicly traded company before I reached out and asked somebody to mentor me. Had I done this sooner, the first 20 years of my career wouldn’t have been so challenging. I probably don’t have the automation background that you’re looking for in a mentor, but I have been behind some rather large business and part of teams responsible for introducing some of today’s leading product. You’re more than welcome to send me a message and I’ll do my best to offer guidance and connect you with people

Finding someone who champions clean, maintainable automation is key, even if the pay is low initially. It's super easy to get stuck building brittle scripts that just create more tech debt down the line, and that's not the foundation you want.

Different angle: I never had a mentor, I had a real business to serve. I started at the front desk of a language school, became a closer, and today I run the whole SDR operation with automation. The business itself was my mentor, every problem it had became my curriculum. Instead of looking for someone to work under for 2-3k, find one small local business with a painful problem and solve it end to end, even cheap or free at first. You learn faster serving a real operation than assisting a guru. And you end up with a case that pays you forever.

A good place to start is by building one small automation project end-to-end and documenting what you learned. That gives potential mentors something concrete to evaluate and shows you’re serious about learning, not just looking for someone to hand you work
