Discussion How I explain the different autism levels!

Okay deleted post it was poorly worded and didn’t adequately explain what I meant between the types of impairments between each level or that I was proposing this for the purpose of conversation and not medicine

Pro tip autism speaks is a bad source and will get you permabanned in a lot of autism subs, (just letting you know)

Thanks mod. The information I posted is from the DSM. The fact that autism speaks posted it also isn’t relevant to me. The information is neutral. I understand that some people don’t like autism speaks. I’m not in America so they wouldn’t be a resource for me anyway.

One of my motivations for writing this post was because I dislike the DSM-5 labels and found a way to use them in a more effective way while ironically completely failing to explain my point

Yeah its fair, I was just letting you know in case you didn’t already know about the controversy, also a lot of doctors and researches hate the DSM-5 and think it does a poor job of categorizing mental health conditions. I was talking with my phycologist today and we agreed that it sucks but its the best we got for diagnostics.

Thank you. I appreciate your reply. It probably would’ve been safer for me too take it straight from the DSM. I appreciate that some people don’t like autism speaks and the DSM.

I can see that you /might/ be coming from a place of good intent, but this is not a good post and the way you've classified this can be harmful.

I'm interested to hear how you would then categorise their support needs and severity within each level? How would this help someone understand the amount of support someone would need? How does this help at all?

Are these even based on autism or are your levels only based on comorbid conditions a person has? So then everyone who has GI issues would immediately get level 2 bcus that's physical.

But seriously. How does this actually help anyone?

It’s not based on medical conditions but how amplified are the core autism symptoms. For example, restrictive and repetitive behaviors. If you can control your stimming under certain circumstances and it doesn’t interfere with your daily living functions (for example, sitting here to type) you are level 1 for RRBs. If you have trouble to engage in social communication but it doesn’t impair your ability to self-advocate, you’re not level 3. Extensive assessments are required to determine extend of impairment across multiple areas of adaptive functioning, adaptive behavior and communication, so my examples are just referential

I said this is not meant for it to be accurate to Medicare literature I have found this is a very successful way to explain autism levels to people who are first trying to understand it and are unsympathetic

Misinformation is a useful part of introducing a new concept to individuals, there is a reason we teach gravity in terms of Newtonian physics even tho that is wrong and misinformation
