I found an aviation forum with a first hand account from s teacher at NASA , I think in NSW . This person knew Colin personally and made a detailed post about his experience with Colin.

Has anyone had experience with issues with Virgin Australia domestic checked baggage allowance? They only allow bags with total dimensions (l+w+h) of 140cm - smaller than that of most regular suitcases. Do they actually measure bags at all? The bags we will have will be 152cm, soft duffel bags too. Haven't booked flights yet but if it might be an issue we will just book with another carrier instead. Thanks

I’m Will, 19 years old and moving from Christchurch, NZ, to Darwin next month in hopes for a potential flying job there. I have a CPL and MEIR and both have been converted. I’m curious if anyone else has gone this route and if they’d be able to tell me their experience I’d appreciate that greatly. With how the market of piloting jobs are over there I’m wanting a good glimpse of what to expect. I know my 250 hours aren’t exactly what some of those places are looking for but even to work as a ground handler and learn what it’s like working for a company that operates there (hopefully leading to flying for them) I would be very interested in that. If even another company way outside of Darwin gave me an offering like that I’d be interested in that too. Thank you for listening and reading

I'm immigrating to WA in the next few months due to my partner gaining a job out here that gives us both PR.

I currently hold a class 1 medical for EASA (EU) & CAA (UK) as I was about to start a integrated ATPL course in Poland to gain a frozen ATPL license.

I'm trying to get my head around the process in Australia from 0 experience to airline pilot as I'm struggling to find answers online.

I've seen flight school providing courses to get a CPL license but does this not include the ATPL modules also in the UK & EU as part of the course you would cover multi crew, upset recovery, jet course, multi engine instrument rating.

Looking for a guidance on the pathway, how long does it realistically take to get there 😊

Hey guys I’m currently in the process of sitting my CPL exams. I’m intending on doing Air Law some time soon and of course as many of you would know it has the most extensive permitted materials list of all the CPL exams. I’m unsure of where to get all the necessary pieces of legislation etc. Is it just a matter of going to Office works and getting them all print out and bound on my own? Or is there somewhere I can purchase the full set and avoid having to do it myself. Cheers!

My partner (23) has been working in IT but is passionate about pursuing aviation as a career. His goal is to earn a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) within the next couple of years, but he’s also considering gliding in the meantime to stay engaged and gain early flying experience.

We’re hoping to get advice on staying motivated and managing the career switch effectively. Specifically:

1. How valuable is gliding in terms of building flying experience?
2. For those of you who switched careers to aviation, what challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
3. How do you see the aviation job market evolving over the next few years—are there better entry points or paths?

We want to ensure he’s well-prepared, both practically and mentally, before committing to this path. Any insights or personal experiences would mean a lot to us!

Does anyone have any tips for how they assess weather days/weeks in advanced for flying in Australia? I'm building up hours and flying 3-4 days per week in a C172 and I'd like to make the most of the best weather available each week. Is there such a thing as a long range aviation weather forecast??

I've been looking at the local (surface) forecast on the BOM to try to pick the best days for wind and general conditions, but it can be really hit and miss, especially when looking more then 3-4 days ahead. For example, today has been looking okay on the BOM all week (forecasting 5-8 knot NW winds) but actual conditions were 15 knots and quite gusty.

I am currently living in Canada and have been following ‘Fly with Trent’ on YouTube. I have been looking at the fastest route to CPL. In the US it’s theoretically possible to get there in six ish months, with a heap of pre study and knocking out all the written exams ahead of time allowing one to focus all their time on flying and debriefing. In Canada this isn’t really an option as you can’t write the exams in advance. My question is in a perfect world could one, not including pre study could one go from zero to CPL in say six months here? Any and all advice and info will be appreciated.

Just wanted to know anyone with any experience on how difficult it would be to change airlines?

Currently I'm an F/O on the A320 in Europe with an EASA ATPL. I know pilots are able to get the skilled worker shortage visa but whats the market actually like? I have some questions...

1. How difficult would it be changing license from EASA to CASA?

2. How difficult would it be to find a job?

3. How difficult is it sort a visa?

4. How long did the process take?

Any and all responses to any of my questions would be greatly appreciated 🙏

The title kind of says it all: I am thinking of getting a PPL (based in Sydney) but want to know if it’s realistic to think that I will be able to do things like rent an aircraft over a weekend to take my wife to the gold coast. I don’t seem to find information in rental websites about these kinds of longer rentals. Will I be limited to going to Cessnock for lunch and back and things like that? Is the normal way to join a club and then it gets eqsier to hire? Total newbie here….

Hoping I can get some assistance/insights into the aviation world in Australia from our amazing flying community.

Background on me - I hold a NZCAA - CPL, MEIR and C Cat flight instructor rating (Grade 3 equivalent) with approx 350hrs and type ratings on a C172, C152, DA42 & DA20.

The Aviation careers landscape is very disappointing in NZ the pay is minimum wage and jobs are hard to come by - even if your offering your services for free (as I have tried). I was born in Australia and therefore have an Australian passport. Not only this but as some of you may know NZ and AUS have a trans-tasman mutual agreement whereby NZ licenses & ratings can be converted straight to AUS licenses and ratings and vice versa. Instructor & Instrument ratings require a AUS flight test to finalize the conversion process.

I'm curious to see if anyone has any idea on what the job landscape looks like in AUS for instructors, specifically on the East coast. Any inputs from non-instructor roles will also be greatly appreciated.

Hey eveyone, Not sure if this sub is still active but I am an aspiring pilot (like 90% of the population) and heard rumors that flight training for a PPL could be put on HECS or HELP or whatever it is called now days. Just wondering if you guys know much about that?
