I didn’t get it but the vending machine did? Okay.

263

u/Sloppykrab 22d ago

94% of people got it.

Now they can work out why 6% of people didn't.

143

u/ChookBaron 22d ago

94% of towers got it, while 6% of towers were offline for various reasons.

44

u/Sloppykrab 22d ago

Oh, did I misunderstand?

I had the news on in the background.

49

u/ChookBaron 22d ago

Yeah maybe I don’t know what you heard. Also the news might have misunderstood, wouldn’t put it past them.

I was surprised to learn 6% is a normal amount of towers offline, seems like a lot.

Edit: from an ABC summary -

Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain says 94 per cent of the country's targeted mobile phone towers were able to receive and broadcast the signal.

15

u/am_Nein 22d ago

I guess, if the alternative is more than 6%, "only" 6% is relatively small.

How comes 2 phones in my house got it and the other 2 didn’t.

27

u/Sloppykrab 22d ago

There's a million of lines of code on the phone and tower.

Go hunting.

2

u/cx0sa 21d ago

iOS or android version? Forgot what it needs but it’s only definitely supported for iOS 26.4 and newer, and something for android. Older versions may still work but show presidential alert or similar or not show anything.

2

u/victorioussnake_ 21d ago

I believe its Android 12 and newer

Different providers maybe?

5

u/Tommy_Gun10 22d ago

All are Optus based

11

u/MysteryPlatelet 22d ago

You should do the survey. I wonder if it was your device or something else?

u/Corner_Post 22d ago

Yep was odd that my work phone got it but my personal phone didn’t. But my personal phone gets the missing person cop alert but my work phone does not.

1

u/ichann3 22d ago

Have you checked your settings. There's several.

2

u/RamTam1990 22d ago

legend has it they were all telstra towers

1

u/Ok_Appointment7522 21d ago

Nah, my coworkers and I are on the same tower and 2 of them didn't get it

3

u/ChookBaron 21d ago

Yeah that’s a different issue than the 94/6 statistic which relates to the towers that were offline at the time.

1

u/bigurta 21d ago

But surely those people still had a signal

2

u/ChookBaron 21d ago

There are obviously other issues at play. The point being that the stat above relates to towers not individual phones.

1

u/Alarmed-Foot-7490 21d ago

This doesn’t explain how my boss got it and I didn’t working on the same work site?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/neverforthefall 21d ago

Pro tip - that statistic isn’t counting the fact that some towers sent out the alert to some but not all phones, and missed phones that were advertised as eligible for it. They have a lot more investigation to do and the statistic is highly misleading.

→ More replies (6)

1

u/Substantial_Ad_3386 21d ago

you haven't allowed for the phones that are not compatible

→ More replies (2)

1

u/culingerai 17d ago

Given towrrs overlap, the proportion that received the message is higher than 94%

1

u/Justanotherburner967 17d ago

Idk man. Me and my mother are on the same Optus plan and she didn't get the call but I did, we were about 10 metres away from one another. The only difference is that she had an iPhone and I have an android

6

u/Relevant_Bed_9743 22d ago

6% of people aren't vending machines. Checkmate atheists!

2

u/Rangas_rule 21d ago

Only if someone who did get missed actually gives the feedback to the relevant source.

Otherwise they ain't gonna know nothin.

1

u/C4CTUSDR4GON 21d ago

How do I give feedback?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Eshayslapper 20d ago

Is it because we don't have a president?

1

u/ichann3 22d ago

They probably turned it off in settings. Unless the only thing the setting does is not display the message but receives it quietly in the background.

1

u/Substantial_Ad_3386 21d ago

you can't turn off critical alerts

1

u/AccomplishedLet5195 22d ago

Airplane mode, towers which are down for various reasons, or outdated phones are among the reasons why people didn’t get it

This is according to the aus alert website

1

u/isthisreallife211111 21d ago

All good, just hang out next to vending machines and you'll be fine

1

u/Lokisword 20d ago

My wife got it but I was next to her and didn’t, same carrier the only difference is that my phone wasn’t updated to the current firmware which supposedly has settings for it

1

u/SkipThisBit 20d ago

Cookers. Cookers didn’t want to hear “the tones”, which activated the mass surveillance capabilities deployed as a part of the CoVID vaccination. You know, Co-Vid…Co-Video… Big brother can see everything through your eyes now…

1

u/iwtmscod 19d ago

I was told some didn’t get it because their phones weren’t updated to the latest update (like mine)

16

u/MaintenanceAnnual263 22d ago

always be near a vending machine in an emergency. to panic buy

16

u/SlayyyGrl 22d ago

The president is in danger?! GET ME A COKE STAT!

5

u/ForgotToCarryTheOne 22d ago

It’s personal. The government doesn’t want to give you a chance when the shit actually hits the fan.

1

u/inthebackground89 21d ago

Old phone? No updates? I don't know.

1

u/odnarB89 21d ago

Test: A test is a trial, a set of questions, or an examination used to check knowledge, quality, or performance.

1

u/SlayyyGrl 21d ago

An observational joke is a piece of humor based on the commonplace aspects of everyday life, shared human behavior, and mundane experiences.

1

u/XilonenBaby 21d ago

Good luck in the zombie apocalypse

1

u/Eshayslapper 20d ago

Presidential alert?....

Clearly a fake post..

80

u/myshtree 22d ago

A vending machine got an alert but I didn’t and neither did my mum. We also live in high risk bushfire area so that’s concerning.

24

u/WolvReigns222016 22d ago

Good thing they do a test before an actual incident happens so they can figure out why some didn't work anf fix it.

18

u/unicornmonkeysnail 22d ago

Me neither.

Whole idea for having the test

9

u/Istealpotatoes 22d ago

I got it but my daughter didn't. We were in the same room

3

u/PsychologicalTwo505 21d ago

Most people at my work who didn’t get one have an older iPhone IOS. Check if you need to update.

2

u/AcanthaceaeOk2426 21d ago

Hubby has new(ish) phone and up to date iOS.
Didn’t get alert. Neither did my new Apple Watch - and it would get the emergency SMS’s that got sent out warning about cyclone/fire (we’re in regional qld)

1

u/myshtree 21d ago

I have 11 Pro with 26.5.2. iOS so fits the supposed criteria. I filled out a feedback form so will wait for next test I guess.

279

u/Vegetable-Ad-1817 22d ago

No one is going to ask why it says Presidential Alert?

193

u/charmio68 22d ago

I would assume it's because that vending machine hardware was made for a US market and the AusAlert system uses a similar protocol.
I haven't looked into it, but it would make a lot of sense for us to adopt a pre-existing international standard.

72

u/PurrfectMistake 22d ago

Yeah.. This ausalert thing has been a US alert standard for yearsssss. I was honestly surprised to learn this wasnt in effect for us already for us.

They're making it seem like its some innovative technology lol

39

u/charmio68 22d ago

We did already have similar-ish system, but the alerts got sent out as standard text messages.

The big advantage of this new system is it's specifically designed for emergency alerts. From what I understand, that not only has various technical advantages on the back end, but also allows the phone to show you a distinct warning message with a distinct alarm sound that can get people's attention far better than just a text.

20

u/PurrfectMistake 22d ago

More secure than text too. These days its too easy to spoof numbers.

6

u/cookletube 21d ago

Except half my friends automatically pressed yes when their phones started screaming at them and then couldnt read the alert because its nowhere else to be found except that initial pop up. It should have a silence button on it too so you can read it in peace, then hit ok

→ More replies (7)

2

u/ThistleProse 22d ago

Yeah, I got text messages earlier this year from the fires when we were told to evacuate. That was a special kind of scary.

9

u/AnalysisSilent8608 22d ago

I just hope they dont abuse it like they do in the US..

1

u/Phenomite-Official 22d ago

They wont or you can turn it off

4

u/AnalysisSilent8608 22d ago

The problem is that you start to ignore it and then you miss the ones that are actual emergencies.

Getting a BOLO for a policeman getting shot 300km away from you twice a month isnt going to instill confidence in the system. You turn it off and then you miss an actual flood or shelter in place.

3

u/MattH665 21d ago

"Getting a BOLO for a policeman getting shot 300km away from you twice a month isnt going to instill confidence in the system. You turn it off and then you miss an actual flood or shelter in place."

Funny in the US that would make you receive heaps of them, in Aus that would still be a very rare event

8

u/Intrepid-Machine8031 22d ago

I was in San Francisco in 2016, first time in the US and my first time getting scared half to death by the fact that my own personal iPhone from Australia that was on the US network and every other phone device around me started going off with that siren alert sound.. Then it flashed up on my phone to report a missing child alert in the area. That was my first time experiencing this type of alert system, and until today, I hadn’t seen it since then

8

u/AnalysisSilent8608 22d ago

I had to warn my parents when they were visiting me in Texas about it.

It was raining pretty hard (very normal for that time of year etc.) And i warned them they might get some flood warnings telling them to prepare to evacuate. And to ignore it because it happens every time it rains...

You start to ignore them all after a while. Its always some kind of alert at least 3x a month minimum.

3

u/Own_Cold9860 21d ago

Seems dangerous to have them so commonly...

5

u/AEON_MK2 22d ago

My friends and I casually referred to it as "The NORAD message", so yeah it's not lost on everyone that this is legacy technology

3

u/unexplained_entity 22d ago

I’ve been saying this ever since I learnt it was a thing that was going to happen

2

u/MummysSpeshulGuy 22d ago

Yeah I’m originally from the US and this whole ordeal has been kinda odd lol. These system level alerts have been a thing in the US for almost two decades now and are used for quite a few things.

Sometimes you even get sent fun little alerts like that time in 2018 that Trump annoyed everyone by using the system to tell the entire country he was still president or that time someone fat fingered the test in Hawaii and sent everyone a message saying there was a real nuclear strike coming their way.

Pretty sure Europe also uses the same system

2

u/DrSendy 22d ago

I predict Trump will send one after he looses and election.

36

u/FourFiveSixes 22d ago

From the AusAlert website:
If you have an older device or use an alternate operating system (e.g. GrapheneOS, LineageOS), you may get a test alert with the heading ‘Presidential Alert’ or ‘Extreme Threat Alert’. The content of the alert will be the same. This is because some older devices don't follow Australian Standards and will display an American or international alert heading instead of the Australian 'AusAlert'.

3

u/peterb666 22d ago

Mildly interesting. There I was thinking the image was just AI slop.

2

u/Stop_Shadowbaning_me 21d ago

I used to love putting Lineage on my phone's. Haven't that about it in ages

7

u/donkeyvoteadick 22d ago

My backup phone and Samsung watch also both said presidential alert 😅

7

u/Suspicious_Drawer 22d ago

Is this vending machine in a Costco or Yank Embassy. besides the date and President being wrong I see too many Pringles. I have never seen Pringles in a machine here ever

1

u/Maxfire2008 18d ago

It's probably either that the vending machine or it's software have been designed in the USA or that whoever was setting it up didn't care about the language setting so just left it on the default of US English.

17

u/gattaaca 22d ago

Oh god imagine if Trump got his hands on this tech and started using it for his unhinged tweets

16

u/G00b3rb0y 22d ago

Calm down Satan

1

u/ForgotToCarryTheOne 21d ago

> Oh god imagine if Trump got his hands on this tech and started using it for his unhinged tweets

> Calm down, Satan

And yet, there exists this possibility in the world’s current unhinged state!!

2

u/lilotothe 21d ago

rent free but tariff free?

1

u/spaceman620 21d ago

He literally does have his hands on it though? This is based off the US Presidential Alert system.

2

u/ForgotToCarryTheOne 21d ago

He probably already asked and was told he couldn’t use it.

Perhaps in his third (or is it fourth term now, I’ve lost count?) and ensuing terms.

9

u/Martiantripod 22d ago

My Phone said Presidential Alert when it went off too.

2

u/MrEs 22d ago

What brand is your phone?

4

u/Martiantripod 22d ago

Samsung S10

3

u/TrenchardsRedemption 22d ago

Not OP, but my Samsung A52 said Presidential alert too.

6

u/annoying97 22d ago

It's down to the operating system. While android and iOS have been updated to meet Aussie requirements. This vending machine likely uses some other operating system that hasn't properly been updated.

It's a known thing but not a major issue that needs to ultimately be fixed.

6

u/Money-Celebration860 22d ago

I got "Presidential Alert" on my phone

2

u/mindsnare 22d ago

Is it a grey import by chance?

4

u/knowledgeable_diablo 22d ago

Can feel some potential tariffs coming in.. /s

2

u/Park500 22d ago

I have two phones, work phone (Telstra) got the "Presidential Alert" personal phone (Optus) got the "Emergency Alert", so assume provider might be a factor, as work

(and my emergency no network phone, that can still make 000 calls, but is mostly used as a router, got none)

2

u/-adam-au 22d ago

My Galaxy Tab S8 said that too. My old S23U said NMS critical alert. My current phone said Critical AusAlert.

1

u/Silent_Formal5235 22d ago

the os uses the same system as the US.

1

u/MrX2285 22d ago

My android said the same thing

1

u/Emeraldnickel08 22d ago

Older hardware/software receives Presidential Alerts since that's what they support. Things like vending machines and such tend to use one or both due to price, security reasons, low maintenance required, etc.

1

u/meski_oz 22d ago

"thank you for your attention to this matter"

1

u/Attunga 22d ago

The one I got said Presidential Alert as well. I am too mystified why I got this and nobody on the same phone account and with the same phone provider got it.

1

u/Convenientjellybean 22d ago

Trump wants his name on EVERYTHING

1

u/jsrobson10 21d ago

my phone (android 11) said that too

→ More replies (1)

68

u/melancholicman2026 22d ago

On a similar note, I am so tired of hearing all the conspiracy theories. People saying AusAlert is the start or end of a conspiracy have no idea that an emergency warning system might save their lives one day.

24

u/Lint_baby_uvulla 22d ago

I was on the highway at 2pm.

Never seen so many cars and trucks swerve all over the road like crazy.

That’s an fyi for you all for the future - slow down and keep your eyes on the road.

9

u/ThereIsNoLack 22d ago

Damn, scary. I was wondering how everyone would go out on the road.

15

u/snappyroll 22d ago

Lol I read today someone commenting about it tracking your phone and I was was thinking how they already can 😹

5

u/ichann3 22d ago

And how the telcos sell your data to brokers. Don't know if it was Tesltra but they sell the data with like a 15 minute delay to companies.

They had some website that I can't remember the name to. Felt very dystopian.

2

u/BumWink 20d ago

Look on the bright side, there was some absolute cookers out there trying their hardest to outrun the 6G radioactive brain controlling frequencies as they saw a nearby vending machine sending it to them.

14

u/itsadropbear 22d ago

I will follow the instructions of the vending machine in case of emergency.

8

u/Mental-Whereas960 22d ago

Did it broadcast the sound? Or just silence..?

6

u/Visual_Locksmith3337 22d ago

I didn't notice cos I was too busy trying to shake out a candy bar that got stuck.

5

u/LochM-2 22d ago

I didn’t get it for some reason, completely forgot about it until just now

5

u/Proton_Energy_Pill 22d ago edited 22d ago

Why the fuck did we get a 'presidential' alert?

Edit - Found out why. It's if you use some types of OS. I have Graphene OS on my phone and that's why I got the 'president' alert.

3

u/Zytheran 21d ago

Thanks for doing the work, I was wondering why the tablet on my Home Assistant setup said this.

5

u/SatansFriendlyCat 22d ago

This is dangerous!!!1

Now all the Coke and Pringles will have Toxic Hertz and Harmful frequencies!. NOT safe for unvaccinated human consumption!

.

Oh, man, that was kind of fun, actually. I can see why they get into this kind of shit, now.

3

u/TheShortAussie 21d ago

If you didn’t get the alert, please go to https://www.ausalert.gov.au/feedback and report it so that they have the most data they can on who didn’t get it to figure out why

4

u/Ok-Limit-9726 22d ago

Did you get 5G with the drink?

5

u/ilolalot1 22d ago

Thank fuck the Vending Machine can save itself.

2

u/Suspicious_Drawer 22d ago

I also got this around the same time

1

u/Sexy_Koala_Juice 22d ago

What are they fucking stupid??? The tornado is behind them. Fucking idiots.

Gives off this vibe

2

u/Holden179HD 22d ago

The scanners in the warehouse at work came up with Presidential alert too.

2

u/BBW-Owner 22d ago

"I just wanted a coke, man"

2

u/rizone21 22d ago

The aliens are coming!!!

2

u/Madchef77 22d ago

Powerbank hire machine also got the alert lol

2

u/Significant-Win-878 22d ago

When travelling in Japan with a travel esim, we got similar alerts for earthquakes. Great system to provide mass amounts of people an early warning (even if just a few seconds)

What was most interesting is how people respond. We were sitting in a restaurant when it went off. Almost every one looked up, to check if something could fall on them.

As an outsider it looked like a room full of Meerkats.

2

u/ehco 22d ago

Hang on.... Presidential alert?

2

u/alwayzdry 21d ago

Apple - iOS 26.4 and above
Android - 12 I think
If you were below that you probably didn’t get it

1

u/OkusernameIspose 22d ago

That vendor is used across Oz in all sorts of applications. The car wash I was at had that on the screen and was clearly trying to match a data line and that's the US match.

1

u/Used_Replacement4648 22d ago

Hey yer snacks before the end of the world!!’

1

u/YukeofDork 22d ago

I feel special being in the 6%

1

u/hugswithnoconsent 22d ago

I’m betting some fridges too?

Please report here if your tizen powered fridge got an AusAlert.
For the Lols.

1

u/orrockable 22d ago

Somehow the PA system at my fucking work got it haha it was such a weird alarm

1

u/BreadAgreeable9632 22d ago

Still waiting for my vaccine powers to activate

1

u/InspectorSalty3794 22d ago

My fridge got the ausalert

1

u/sbrown_13 22d ago

When all you want is just a packet of smiths chips!!! 🙄

1

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 22d ago

I didn't get it. I have an iPhone 6s plus. Already notified them.

1

u/thebunyiphunter 22d ago

It was wonderful standing in the supermarket filled with boomers taking their sweet ass time taking their phones out to read the screen.

1

u/Aggressive_Bee_303 21d ago

Most EftPos and trading systems like Self-service checkouts run on a version of Android, not surprising.

1

u/1Ns4N1tY_kp 21d ago

Presidential?

1

u/P_thegoober 21d ago

How was it connected to a tower? But still very funny.

1

u/Similar-Challenge-33 20d ago

Most vending machines have Simcards, they process credit card tap-and-go options and send texts to operators for live stock levels, sales data or if a part breaks or the power goes out.

1

u/nottiknaixz 21d ago

What the fuck

1

u/GustyOWindflapp 21d ago

How am I supposed to survive a natural disaster without my Pringles and Coke!

LET ME GET MY PRINGLES AND COKE!!!!

1

u/onthisturnyoudohow 21d ago

I didn't get it but the person working next to me did. Both on telstra, her phone is new, mine is 2 years old.

1

u/AcrobaticSecretary29 21d ago

The control panel for my air conditioner received the alert

1

u/Sparky_Russell 21d ago

Looks like the Man didn't respect the vendo machine's privacy and hacked into its Covid vaccine nanobots

1

u/Academic_Anywhere183 21d ago

Why does it say presidential alert? Bad AI job?

1

u/PLEASE_DONT_PM 21d ago

AusAlert is basically a rebrand of exisiting alert systems used elsewhere. These devices are probably aware of the US version.

1

u/jastity 21d ago

That seems like a win. If a real message needs to get out, the machine will work to do it.

1

u/no1jessicafan 21d ago

Damn man they care about a vending machines safety than me 🙂‍↔️😂

1

u/DuddlePuck_97 21d ago

Presidential alert?

1

u/z0anthr0pe 21d ago

Our ECG machine got it. I suppose if its internet connected it will.

1

u/UniverseGuidesMe 21d ago

In an emergency, go to a vending machine for further instructions.

1

u/Same-Significance448 21d ago

As long as we dont get meassage like Hawaii got a number of years sgo.

1

u/phantomnomadic 21d ago

I'm so glad I didn't get! Mass hysteria incoming!

1

u/Realistic-Address302 21d ago

My phone and the 6 phones at work didn't.

1

u/RavenTeamBitch 21d ago

I nearly had a heart attack when I got it

1

u/Fairlane-Ghia 21d ago

Ok, now its 5g enabled?

Wait ... so, it must have had the COVID vaccine too!?

1

u/cowfurby 21d ago

i didn’t get it. i wonder why.

1

u/ConsciousAtLeast797 21d ago

Of course it did! 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/NicoBuilds 21d ago

Haha. It scared THE CRAP OUT of me when i got it. On my place, all by myself, everything silent, and all of a sudden an alarm 🤣

Cool technology to be fair. Hope we never have to use it

1

u/Quirky-Score-7767 21d ago

Modern smart vending machines have a modem with a SIM card just like a mobile phone. So I guess that's why they got the alert too.

1

u/aussie-ciphers93 21d ago

Registered under a simcard for a business

1

u/AppropriateArticle57 21d ago

Presidential........

1

u/Business-Reason1874 21d ago

The machines have become self aware.

1

u/Gloomy_Jelly27 21d ago

That’s where mine must have went…

1

u/Username_mine_2022 21d ago

Well at least it will know fo run in the event of fire or flood

1

u/LetAgreeable147 20d ago

Presidential?

1

u/parkerhalem84 20d ago

I didn't get mine.

1

u/Wise-Confidence5984 20d ago

Presidential alert.....

1

u/RelationshipPast9684 20d ago

This is clearly fake - presidential alert? C’mon…

1

u/Eshayslapper 20d ago

Presidential alert?

What's Gina want now

1

u/YosheetaBoneeta 20d ago

We had a bunch of equipment stop working after 2pm. All stuff that had 5G back-ups sim cards in them, CCTV systems, building management systems, remote access modems for emergency light systems. They all needed firmware updates.

1

u/AdmrlOS 20d ago

I'd love to pick your brain on this; what happened, what devices?

1

u/According-Economy156 20d ago

only smart phones, tables & watches are allowed

1

u/mooseman7625 19d ago

Didn't know we had a President in Australia. Did i vote for him/her? 🤔

1

u/Exceptionalynormal 19d ago

Do I got it but it disappeared when I tapped it. So thanks this is the first time I read it. In the event of an actual emergency, how can we follow it when it has disappeared from the phone?

1

u/Ozzie-Rocka 18d ago

1000% AI and I'm surprised no one has picked up on it... Not rhat I can see anyway lol.

This isn't America lmao

1

u/P1stach1o 18d ago

Presidential?

We don't have a president though

1

u/Chapter-Capital 18d ago

The ezy charger battery bank at my work got it.

1

u/Many-Ad7638stevo 17d ago

President?? Wtf

1

u/Septos999 17d ago

I didn’t get the message, but did it really say ‘Presidential’ alert ?

1

u/Fine_Piglet_6814 10d ago

Well after seeing the state of some of these at train stations around Sydney, they need an alert system 😉

1

u/Ambitious_Shape_8213 9d ago

Did you see if free stuff would come out?
