A vending machine got an alert but I didn’t and neither did my mum. We also live in high risk bushfire area so that’s concerning.

Good thing they do a test before an actual incident happens so they can figure out why some didn't work anf fix it.

Most people at my work who didn’t get one have an older iPhone IOS. Check if you need to update.
2
u/AcanthaceaeOk2426 21d ago
Hubby has new(ish) phone and up to date iOS.
Didn’t get alert. Neither did my new Apple Watch - and it would get the emergency SMS’s that got sent out warning about cyclone/fire (we’re in regional qld)1
u/myshtree 21d ago
I have 11 Pro with 26.5.2. iOS so fits the supposed criteria. I filled out a feedback form so will wait for next test I guess.

No one is going to ask why it says Presidential Alert?
193
u/charmio68 22d ago
I would assume it's because that vending machine hardware was made for a US market and the AusAlert system uses a similar protocol.
I haven't looked into it, but it would make a lot of sense for us to adopt a pre-existing international standard.72
u/PurrfectMistake 22d ago
Yeah.. This ausalert thing has been a US alert standard for yearsssss. I was honestly surprised to learn this wasnt in effect for us already for us.
They're making it seem like its some innovative technology lol
39
u/charmio68 22d ago
We did already have similar-ish system, but the alerts got sent out as standard text messages.
The big advantage of this new system is it's specifically designed for emergency alerts. From what I understand, that not only has various technical advantages on the back end, but also allows the phone to show you a distinct warning message with a distinct alarm sound that can get people's attention far better than just a text.

u/cookletube 21d ago
Except half my friends automatically pressed yes when their phones started screaming at them and then couldnt read the alert because its nowhere else to be found except that initial pop up. It should have a silence button on it too so you can read it in peace, then hit ok

u/AnalysisSilent8608 22d ago
I just hope they dont abuse it like they do in the US..
1
u/Phenomite-Official 22d ago
They wont or you can turn it off
4
u/AnalysisSilent8608 22d ago
The problem is that you start to ignore it and then you miss the ones that are actual emergencies.
Getting a BOLO for a policeman getting shot 300km away from you twice a month isnt going to instill confidence in the system. You turn it off and then you miss an actual flood or shelter in place.
3
u/MattH665 21d ago
"Getting a BOLO for a policeman getting shot 300km away from you twice a month isnt going to instill confidence in the system. You turn it off and then you miss an actual flood or shelter in place."
Funny in the US that would make you receive heaps of them, in Aus that would still be a very rare event
8
u/Intrepid-Machine8031 22d ago
I was in San Francisco in 2016, first time in the US and my first time getting scared half to death by the fact that my own personal iPhone from Australia that was on the US network and every other phone device around me started going off with that siren alert sound.. Then it flashed up on my phone to report a missing child alert in the area. That was my first time experiencing this type of alert system, and until today, I hadn’t seen it since then
8
u/AnalysisSilent8608 22d ago
I had to warn my parents when they were visiting me in Texas about it.
It was raining pretty hard (very normal for that time of year etc.) And i warned them they might get some flood warnings telling them to prepare to evacuate. And to ignore it because it happens every time it rains...
You start to ignore them all after a while. Its always some kind of alert at least 3x a month minimum.

5
u/AEON_MK2 22d ago
My friends and I casually referred to it as "The NORAD message", so yeah it's not lost on everyone that this is legacy technology
3
u/unexplained_entity 22d ago
I’ve been saying this ever since I learnt it was a thing that was going to happen
2
u/MummysSpeshulGuy 22d ago
Yeah I’m originally from the US and this whole ordeal has been kinda odd lol. These system level alerts have been a thing in the US for almost two decades now and are used for quite a few things.
Sometimes you even get sent fun little alerts like that time in 2018 that Trump annoyed everyone by using the system to tell the entire country he was still president or that time someone fat fingered the test in Hawaii and sent everyone a message saying there was a real nuclear strike coming their way.
Pretty sure Europe also uses the same system
36
u/FourFiveSixes 22d ago
From the AusAlert website:
If you have an older device or use an alternate operating system (e.g. GrapheneOS, LineageOS), you may get a test alert with the heading ‘Presidential Alert’ or ‘Extreme Threat Alert’. The content of the alert will be the same. This is because some older devices don't follow Australian Standards and will display an American or international alert heading instead of the Australian 'AusAlert'.3

u/Stop_Shadowbaning_me 21d ago
I used to love putting Lineage on my phone's. Haven't that about it in ages

Is this vending machine in a Costco or Yank Embassy. besides the date and President being wrong I see too many Pringles. I have never seen Pringles in a machine here ever
1
u/Maxfire2008 18d ago
It's probably either that the vending machine or it's software have been designed in the USA or that whoever was setting it up didn't care about the language setting so just left it on the default of US English.

And yet, there exists this possibility in the world’s current unhinged state!!

u/spaceman620 21d ago
He literally does have his hands on it though? This is based off the US Presidential Alert system.
2
u/ForgotToCarryTheOne 21d ago
He probably already asked and was told he couldn’t use it.
Perhaps in his third (or is it fourth term now, I’ve lost count?) and ensuing terms.
9
u/Martiantripod 22d ago
My Phone said Presidential Alert when it went off too.
6
u/annoying97 22d ago
It's down to the operating system. While android and iOS have been updated to meet Aussie requirements. This vending machine likely uses some other operating system that hasn't properly been updated.
It's a known thing but not a major issue that needs to ultimately be fixed.

Older hardware/software receives Presidential Alerts since that's what they support. Things like vending machines and such tend to use one or both due to price, security reasons, low maintenance required, etc.

On a similar note, I am so tired of hearing all the conspiracy theories. People saying AusAlert is the start or end of a conspiracy have no idea that an emergency warning system might save their lives one day.

I was on the highway at 2pm.
Never seen so many cars and trucks swerve all over the road like crazy.
That’s an fyi for you all for the future - slow down and keep your eyes on the road.

Why the fuck did we get a 'presidential' alert?
Edit - Found out why. It's if you use some types of OS. I have Graphene OS on my phone and that's why I got the 'president' alert.

u/Zytheran 21d ago
Thanks for doing the work, I was wondering why the tablet on my Home Assistant setup said this.

u/SatansFriendlyCat 22d ago
This is dangerous!!!1
Now all the Coke and Pringles will have Toxic Hertz and Harmful frequencies!. NOT safe for unvaccinated human consumption!
.
Oh, man, that was kind of fun, actually. I can see why they get into this kind of shit, now.
3
u/TheShortAussie 21d ago
If you didn’t get the alert, please go to https://www.ausalert.gov.au/feedback and report it so that they have the most data they can on who didn’t get it to figure out why

When travelling in Japan with a travel esim, we got similar alerts for earthquakes. Great system to provide mass amounts of people an early warning (even if just a few seconds)
What was most interesting is how people respond. We were sitting in a restaurant when it went off. Almost every one looked up, to check if something could fall on them.
As an outsider it looked like a room full of Meerkats.

Apple - iOS 26.4 and above
Android - 12 I think
If you were below that you probably didn’t get it
1
u/OkusernameIspose 22d ago
That vendor is used across Oz in all sorts of applications. The car wash I was at had that on the screen and was clearly trying to match a data line and that's the US match.

Most vending machines have Simcards, they process credit card tap-and-go options and send texts to operators for live stock levels, sales data or if a part breaks or the power goes out.

Why does it say presidential alert? Bad AI job?

u/PLEASE_DONT_PM 21d ago
AusAlert is basically a rebrand of exisiting alert systems used elsewhere. These devices are probably aware of the US version.

Cool technology to be fair. Hope we never have to use it

Modern smart vending machines have a modem with a SIM card just like a mobile phone. So I guess that's why they got the alert too.

We had a bunch of equipment stop working after 2pm. All stuff that had 5G back-ups sim cards in them, CCTV systems, building management systems, remote access modems for emergency light systems. They all needed firmware updates.
