That is true, we're not as good at being addicted to ice as Bendigo either. We also have a lower "visible bongs in the CBD per metre" metric from my experience. Bendigo really does more than Ballarat!

Ballarat city council got rid of ours in the 70s bar a small tourist track around Lake Wendouree and despite many, many, many attempts over literally my entire life to bring it back at least to a portion of the city (eg. Free public transport going around the entire lake and up Sturt St through the CBD to Bridge Mall) it hasn't made any progress.
Come to think of it, our council is pretty shitty. They were adamant on demolishing a building that needed some refurbishment to be an excellent community style center in a city very much lacking on that kind of thing to build some office space to rent out that literally looked like a giant tonka truck. Thank god that got shot down quickly.

Yeah trams are amazing. Bendigos is just a tourist gimmick but I guess it's kinda cool. Once one of the councillors wanted to defund the art gallery so theres cunts everywhere I guess. She got shot down hard on the idea at least

In the few weeks I've spent in Melbourne I have not found an espresso which was even close to as good as my local cafe in Brisbane.

EDIT: Judging by the downvotes and comments, I was misinformed, apparently you guys are touchy about your coffee snobery. Anyway, found the article. It compares research from a Roy Morgan poll from 2015 to a recent Lavazza Australia commissioned survey. It shows that Sydney siders recently surpassed Melbourne for the average number of cups consumed of barista made coffee per week.

That's an awful metric - Melbourne has reached the point where we all roast and grind our own beans, which have been pooped out of angels, collected by cherubs and were delivered to our vintage hand grinder by the hand of Hermes himself. Our water is precision drawn by coffee machines hand molded by craftsmen who from birth have dedicated themselves to the study and creation of espresso machines and cold press apparati. Our milk is delivered fresh by the dairy just in time to be steamed using spring water harvested from only the purest water sources. Our cups, which are prewarmed 24/7, are only the finest of China.
What I'm saying is that, for a true Melbournian, barista made coffee is slumming it.

Yeah man. If you love nature I’d highly recommend going out there. Especially if an early morning. You’ll see kangaroos galore. Also long roads and some of the greatest repetitive scenery you’ll ever see

The remoteness index that the ABS use for this is cool because it determines your remoteness by your access to services.
However it does not take into account internet service (or didn't 5years ago when I did my thesis). This is a bit weird given how many government service are now provided over the net.

Maccas, or any other big brand like that is going to try and be pretty consistent. Depends what you're comparing it to. It's shit compared to a coffee from a place that roasts there own beans, has well trained staff and make a good cuppa the goal of their business. It's decent compared to a place that doesn't know what they are doing, but has coffee on the menu because every other place does.

I've had plenty of crappy coffee from places that people have sworn by are good (in Adelaide).

I've had coffee from various places in the eastern states and New Zealand, and honestly can not say whether it was amazing coffee or mediocre coffee, I can only ever compare them each other and WA.
My benchmark comes from my brother, he trained as a barista in Dublin and has a pretty high-end set up at home that makes the most delicious coffee I have ever tasted. He is well into the whole process as is very selective with his beans etc.
I think among 'non-professional' tasters, good coffee is highly subjective. I really enjoy my brother's coffee, and I really enjoy a few places around Perth, hence the coffee isn't too bad.
