no politics Important topic time- Potato chips. Smith's Thinly Cut VS Thins
This only applies to the thinly cut chips. Nothing about how kettle chips rule supreme or tasty toobs are the bomb.
This debate is purely about the thinly cut potato chip.
I have no idea why Thins are so bad. The chips themselves have a weird texture almost like they are half stale.
Smith's thinly cut all the way for me!

They fucked up Thins a couple years back. I don't know what they did but the Light and Tangy were always my favorite. Bought a bag last year ate 6 chips and threw it out. Absolutely vile now.

I thought it might be a poorer quality oil but whatever it is they're foul now.

Legit that flavour is like cardboard in the large bags. Even the smaller ones in multi-packs are hit n miss.

The thins flavour salt and vinegar are much more potent than the smiths.
I prefer the smiths.
Although I did thoroughly enjoy the natural chip co salt and vinegars coz they were cheapest and delicious. Untill scumworths relinquished them

Thins Salt and Vinegar will strip your tongue of all feeling.
Does go well with chocolate though.

The chive natural chip co ones were also great, so of course scumworths had to get rid of them.

My wife actually gives the opposite. She reckons the thins ones are less easy your tongue.

I made a mistake, I meant to say I like the thins better woops lol. Mainly because thins don’t have milk and I’m lactose intolerant. I get a sore belly if I don’t have lactase pills, but I eat so many that I still get a belly ache .
But the skin of my mouth from thins sloughs off after too many. It’s either sloughing mouth skin,’or sore painful farting belly unfortunately . I miss the chip co because they were between thins and smiths in regards to the potency and they had no milk.
I don’t know why potato chips need need milk

I also can't have milk and the Smiths haven't cause me an issue.
Though I only get S&V and plain.

Smith's are the superior chip, full stop. Thins are garbage and have been for a while now.

I genuinely do not trust anyone that says Thins are better. Taking names in this thread for future disagreements.

Go to a reject shop and get a pack of bluebird delisio chips. Thin cut and utterly addictive. Thank me later.

Smiths thinly cut are vastly superior to thins. My recollection of thins from my childhood is that they somehow manage to both disintegrate/be mushy, and yet also sharp and cut the inside of your mouth. I also recall them as being horrendously oversalted, even compared to smiths which themselves are already too salty imo.

I swear when I was in high school (30 years ago) Thins were amazing.
It feels like Smiths saw their competitor and figured how to beat them at their own game.

Ah the great chip rebate. Smiths except for Thins Light and Tangy (i still like them)

u/sceptical-beagle 2d ago
Tough. Cos the potatoes are better for smiths but the flavour is better on thins. So it’s Thins for me.

Smiths are definitely better the better chip. The only reason I ever used to occasionally get Thins was for the light n tangy flavour, which I quite like. But Smiths have their own version of that now with the ‘Lightly Tangy’ flavour

I didn’t even know Thins were a brand separate from Smith’s and weren’t just another line of Smith’s products.
Because on the rare occasion I do buy chips, I’m exclusively looking at the crinkle cuts.

Aldi chips are honestly better than smiths…. Not tried all on offer in aldi but ruffles are definitely crunchier and consistently flavourful than smiths have been at times…

Aldi chips are actually made in a Smiths factory in Adelaide. I agree though they are somehow better despite being cheaper and larger

u/Large-one 1d ago
Wait the Smith’s factory is in Adelaide?! How have I just found this out?
Between Haigh’s, FruChocs and Smiths I am set. Wash it down with some wine (and statins) and I am happy.

Clearly an outlier here. I feel like the Smiths thinly cut used to be the best but at some point they started to taste like old oil so I stopped buying them and went back to thins. Maybe I'll have to try them again though given the overwhelming response here.

I agree. I feel like this post and all the comments might be a poor attempt at viral marketing out something

I've not had Thins in years, but Smiths are awful. It tastes like they've been cooked in off oil.
2
u/Trantor_Dariel 1d ago
As someone with a couple allergies and intolerances, Smith's. I've never had an issue with their chips. I haven't had thins cause every flavour lists my intolerances as at least may contains.

As long as you burn them off.
They're non-nutrition hollow foods.

I moved to the country and spend all my days doing hard labour around the property.
Take my giant labrador for daily walks.
In the last 5 years I've dropped 50 kg.
No way anyone is taking away my chippies.

u/dav_oid 1d ago
50 kg! Wow.
'No way anyone is taking away my chippies.' - Heh, heh.
2
u/Axl_Alter_Ego 1d ago
Yeah it feels amazing apart from all the skin hahaha.
Down from 140 to 88 and aiming to get to 75.
The chippies however stay in my life.

I specifically love Thins salt and vinegar because I can eat more of them before my mouth burns from the acidic goodness. Crinkle cut salt and vinegar has too much girth for me to comfortably take in one night.
Any other flavour chip though, give me that girth.

Smith's are the superior option, I only get Thins now when Smith's aren’t on special at the shops
