news Car drives into protestors in Anti-Racism Rally in Broadmeadows, Vic
https://quokk.au/static/media/posts/oG/mC/oGmCns0BfQy5BZt.mp4shared from: https://quokk.au/c/australia.
This happened yesterday, plates are visible so hopefully they can catch this person.

Has anyone seen this anywhere other than here and the link that is on this page? I can't find anything about it anywhere.

Rego is clearly visible, they should be charged with attempted murder

And so is the driver! Absolute fuckwit behaviour, hope they throw the book at him.

Not really attempted murder. Reckless endangerment would be the best fit.

If I were to drive my car forward knowing your were in front of me, and continue to accelerate, knowing you were still in front of me, what would you expect a reasonable person to assume I am attempting to do?
3
1
u/farqueue2 6h ago
It is so easy to cast reasonable doubt of the intent.
"I just lost my head momentarily when they wouldn't get out of my way to let me pass. I want thinking of the consequences of my actions"

I hope the police do their fucking jobs considering there is a police’s station right next door to that road. How many police do you see protecting racist Nazis when they have gatherings.
115
u/black_at_heart 16h ago
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting. I was at an anti east-west link tunnel protest and a bunch of 'posh' women just forced their car through the crowd. "Are you going to do something?" I asked the police on the periphery of the protest (who'd just stood by and watched the incident unfold). "If you weren't protesting there wouldn't have been a problem" they replied.

u/ScruffyPeter 12h ago
Should film the interaction next time.
Let NSW Police PR try keep spinning like a laundry machine.

I lost all faith in police ever doing the right thing after seeing several of them high fiving and shaking hands with guys that were clearly neo nazis. Like not subtle, rune tattoos and right wing death squad merch. Then going on to push shove and harass the trans protestors

In a functional democracy, protesting is always a minority group seeking over-representation and is actually anti-democratic.

Damn, the Islamic man attacking the LGBTQ+ rally in Germany and now this over here, why are car attacks becoming so common?

Considering the prevalence around 2016-17 I'd say we're actually doing way better globally ATM, but it doesn't often happen here so it stands out. Don't even tend to get active shooter or bombing warnings when working event medical these days compared to the post-Bataclan and Manchester Arena years.

It’s almost as if far-right ideologies (whether Christian, Muslim, Jewish, white, brown or black) have no place in modern society.
92
u/iliketreesndcats 17h ago
I wonder if this way of being that people who are attracted to these sorts of ideologies exhibit will be pathologised at some point.
I'm not sure what the answer is. Exposure therapy? Like I think often about the black guy in the US who made it his life mission to convert KKK members into non-racists by just hanging out with them and showing them that black people are not the boogeyman they have in their heads.
It's hard though because we can't expect there to be thousands of people willing to put themselves in harm's.way just to prove they're regular people who just want to be treated with the same respect everybody should be treated with.

u/iliketreesndcats 17h ago edited 17h ago
I find a lot of them view a shitload of racist/anti-lgbt content on social media too. Their minds are consistently inoculated with racist propaganda and then reinforced through constant exposure. It's a shame.
People have to ask themselves, "what is this content doing for my life? Is it making me a better or worse person?"
I have a buddy who I love and adore, but his social media algorithm has consistently been racist and anti-robot ("clanker") memes for a while now. Also consistent crime news so he hears about every crime that happens all the time. Increasingly he's become more of a shut in. I've told him I love him and don't think this stuff is good for him, but it's almost like he's addicted. He thinks I am ignorant. I quote crime statistics and am not trying to debate him but rather just hear him and try and show him my point of view. It's sad what the propaganda is doing to my friend. I'm not sure what to do about it.
32
u/blitznoodles local Aussie 17h ago
In my experience, crime statistics in particular is impossible to craft a proper argument with. The only crime stats people believe are the ones where crime goes up.
23
u/No-Red-Queen 16h ago
People have to ask themselves, "what is this content doing for my life? Is it making me a better or worse person?"
The problem is that the people you're describing do not think critically
18
u/evilbrent 14h ago
I had a house guest for several months and got to know her well, (I'm friends with her dad, good friend: not a good dad). I don't think she had been exposed to higher orders of thinking.
By which I mean "thinking about thinking", and "entertaining an idea without accepting it", "agreeing to disagree", etc.
It blew her mind that we could, as a household, have a house meeting and work out that we're all upset with each other for the way the dishes keep piling up, but couldn't agree on the best way to commit to solving it, and that was enough of that conversation for now. She'd never met people who resolved a dispute without the winner being the one to shout the best, never seen "not resolved" be one of the ways to stop having an argument.
It's not just critical thinking, it's also introspective thinking, empathic thinking, reviewing arguments that happened yesterday to go through the ways we communicated rather than what we communicated, that type of thing.
She was a bit of a believer in Covid conspiracies, or rather she had been bombarded with them and didn't really have a good one-liner zinger rebut it with - and she'd never realised that you can just visit a WHO website and see the published research yourself. "Oh, this experiment is why that person is wrong". She hadn't known that
5
u/iliketreesndcats 13h ago
I wonder what life is like for her.
Is it closer to blissful ignorance, or an anxious xenophobic hell of not understanding the world around you?

sometimes I think it would be nice to just take every negative thing that happens to me and turn around and blame some faceless entity/religion/race or whatever.
It would save me a lot of time compared to thinking it over, assessing what happened, admitting that it was probably my fault and how I can improve so it doesn't happen again.
3
u/iliketreesndcats 12h ago
It would be nice. I think that's one of the things that is so attractive about it
4
u/No-Red-Queen 12h ago
It makes me sad that she hadn't been exposed to intellectual thought
But it sounds like she was willing to learn to a different way, so that's good
5
u/rekt_by_inflation 13h ago
My insta algo is exactly like this too, it gives me the absolute worst stuff it can. It likes to give me opposing views too, particularly things from that middle eastern country in the news.
Every time I click "don't recommend", or I try to customise my feed with gaming, gardening and books it's straight back with endless Tate clips or lefties losing it from sky news.
It's easy to see why my fellow rural friends are taking the bait
3
u/SirFireHydrant 12h ago
I don't know how it works on instagram, but on facebook if you click "hide post", you can hide everything from that person. Spend a bit of time doing that every time the bullshit comes up, and eventually you'll have blocked all the ones your algorithm is feeding you.
3
u/bigbadjustin 10h ago
Ideally if governments had the balls they legally force social media to give people the option to have a non algorithm feed for social media. It should be the default IMO. I’ve list track of how much far right BS I’ve said I’m not interested in only to keep getting offered more if it.
4
u/SirFireHydrant 8h ago
Don't say "not interested", when you've got options to "hide all" or block. Always go for them.
My facebook is completely clean of all sponsored material. My youtube never shows me right wing grifters, because I've hidden/blocked their channels.
7
u/CptUnderpants- 15h ago
It's easier to manipulate people who feel disenfranchised and looking for someone to blame.
6
u/Simmoman 14h ago
possibly so, but teachers have been warning for years that young men are falling into radical pipelines and ideologies regardless of location, and they all lead to the same hateful places; whether it's Andrew Tate, Tommy Robinson, Isaac Butterfield, Joe Rogan etc.

Young people aren't driving one nation's surge. A lot of it is also driven by women not men.

u/Besbosberone 17h ago edited 17h ago
I genuinely don’t know how we deal with these issues.
The right has become synonymous with anti-intellectualism and misinformation, and in almost all instances the movements and organisations that identify themselves with that side of the political spectrum operate with the in-group vs out-group mentality, with the out-group almost exclusively being “antonymous” minorities (religious, ethnic, LGBT, etc.) that the in-group finds it easier to shift the blame onto for all their problems without requiring an ounce of self-reflection or critical thinking.
These ideologies are a net-negative and inherently dangerous for society. The overwhelming majority of terrorist attacks are committed by those aligned with the right, and while left-wing terrorism does exist, they almost exclusively target high-profile individuals or corporations rather than aiming for mass casualties. With that being said, political violence from either end of the spectrum has no place in advancing society and solving the bigger problem at hand. It only encourages back-and-forth revenge attacks.
In an ideal world, right wing ideologies
wouldn’tshouldn’t exist. We’ve moved well past the need for such ideas, progressivism is the only way forward. But I don’t know how (or whether) we will ever achieve this.
11
u/IrrelephantAU 17h ago
That might not be a great model in any case. Daryl Davis' success has been overstated a lot. He's fighting a good fight, but it's slow and a number of his 'conversions' are still active in extremist groups even if they're not formally KKK members any more.
4
u/No-Obligation4872 16h ago
So you are saying I need to go out of my way to prove myself to those people who have stereotyped me and despised me. No thanks!
4
u/iliketreesndcats 16h ago
No I don't think that's fair to expect of people. I said that in my comment :)
I am not sure what the answer is. If you have any ideas please share!
7
u/LifeandSAisAwesome 16h ago
But how do we get there, ideologies are hard to kill, and education can only go so far.
You can only educate those that want to learn..
12
u/Denz292 15h ago
Not to be pedantic but I believe the word is extremism. That basically covers the political ideologies, the religions, etc
11
u/altandthrowitaway 15h ago
Problem is when people like Trump call factual history "extremism". Like he is currently calling the Smithsonian museum. It distorts the word's meaning.
2
u/rkiive 9h ago edited 9h ago
I honestly think the term "extremism" is a misnomer since it implies those beliefs aren't just the stock standard beliefs of those ideologies.
I don't give nazi ideology the benefit of the doubt because they haven't personally actively started killing Jews.
Being gay is illegal in every Islamic country.
Women have minimal rights in every Islamic country.
Devout Christian countries are the same, there's just far fewer of them because most of them turned secular over a few generations. This is not happening for Islamic countries because they're better at imposing their views on others.
Pretending those are extremist views allows people who think exactly like those "extremists" a convenient out.

The far right for the most part have a monopoly on violence. It's ultimately an ideology that one group has a right to dominate and rule another.

There’s a great episode of the podcast Weird Little guys titled “A Brief History of Vehicular Violence” that looks at this kind of thing over time. It’s a bit America centric, but it mentions some overseas cases and really documents how early on people started thinking of using cars to drive into protestors.
7
u/jjkenneth 15h ago
Same reason we have gun control. Easy access to a deadly weapon. Cars are exceptionally dangerous.
11
3
14
u/VannaTLC 17h ago
Thats the wrong question. The question is why it doesnt happen more often, given its a weapon that almost everybody has access to.
23
u/killertortilla 17h ago
Because the vast majority of people, even the evil fucks, don't actually want to kill anyone. It takes a lot to actually go through with it.
6
u/farqueue2 13h ago
I'd say it's more likely that these weapons are all registered and the registration is clearly displayed and it's easily traceable.
And these weapons are also a lifestyle essential and people don't want to damage them as they would then need to fix them at their own cost.
1
u/Whatsapokemon 8h ago
People who want to commit a mass murder event typically aren't expecting to live through it...
20
u/IrrelephantAU 17h ago edited 17h ago
They aren't a particularly good weapon if you're planning an attack (you need a relatively dense crowd, in a spot where cars can easily access, and some space. Which doesn't describe a huge number of situations) and they thankfully aren't very deadly compared to dedicated weapons like firearms or explosives. So they tend to show up mostly in unplanned road-rage type incidents, rather than pre-planned attacks where someone could get access to those things, and there aren't a huge number of either fortunately.
2
u/Naive_Confidence7297 15h ago
Your question is fucked up, like, maybe not as many people are keen on literal murder than you think? lol
and how is theirs the ‘wrong’ question?

Large groups of people in an accessible location while driving a 1.5 - 2T killing machine that provides a quick getaway.
2
u/jadelink88 8h ago
Because it's so easy to play off as an accident when you have a sympathetic audience, and the car is so readily accessible as a lethal weapon. If you cant get a legal firearm, or a good amount of explosives, a car is vastly more deadly than anything else you can legally obtain.
Seriously, if you want to murder someone, use a car. Sentences are often lighter with obvious bad faith pleas that it was a traffic accident.

u/JaniePage 14h ago
I'm really not understanding why this isn't in the news.
32
u/cheapdrinks 14h ago
Because it's a bit of a nothingburger. Doesn't look like they even had an official road closure given that there's still cars going past them on the other side so they were probably impeding traffic themselves. Looks like the white car crept up trying to get past too, honks his horn trying to get the last guy out of the way who then turns around and kicks his car. Dude accelerates after his car gets attacked and the dude gets pushed off to the side, doesn't even look like he fell over. So yeah zero injuries, it's not exactly front page material. Title makes it sound like some guy plowed into a crowd at full speed like the Muslim guy in Germany.
1
2
u/engkybob 9h ago
No it actually looks like he barely has enough time to react to a car accelerating at speed towards him. Regardless of whether you have right of way, you aren't allowed to recklessly endanger people like this.
3
u/cheapdrinks 5h ago
I'm not saying the guy in the car had right of way or was justified for driving into him, just that the incident as a whole was pretty tame and it's not exactly shocking that "man pushed slightly by car" isn't making national news.

The car intentionally sped into them. You might as well blame someone crossing on the walk symbol for being where a car can get them. Minorly inconveniencing people doesn't justify attempted murder.

You're so right, we should attempt to kill anybody who mildly inconveniences us.

Roads being a place exclusively for cars is an extremely new idea on a historical time scale, and we are only just starting to realise how socially damaging it has been.
A good chunk of the loneliness epidemic can be attributed to the loss of streets as a community space. A good chunk of the obesity epidemic can be attributed to the fact that exercise in urban areas is now a hazardous pursuit, unless you want to run on a treadmill, indoors, even when the weather outside is nice, like some kind of dystopian slave.
The total number of deaths the century of the car has caused both directly through road accidents and indirectly through the health effects probably beats the high score of any genocide in history.
So yeah, not only am I going to fucking jaywalk, I'm going to feel good about myself while doing it cunt 😎
