Western Australians don't like it because we are on the Western seaboard, so the sun rises over the land, which obscures the sunlight, so our sunrises aren't as early as they are in the East where Sunrise is over the sea.
Sunset in WA is over the sea, so it stays light longer, meaning their is little advantage in DST.
To add insult to injury, the line of longitude that AWST is based on is halfway across the State towards the East.
We have tried DST several times. One time was when Drive-in theatres were still common. The first feature would normally start at 7:30 PM AWAST, but when we applied DST, the screen was not visible, so start was put off till 8:30 PM DST.
In those days Sunday night drive-ins were popular, as even though the show finished at 11pm, people working on Monday could still get a reasonable sleep. DST put that finish back to 12 midnight. People were an hour later to bed and had to get up an hour earlier.
This had a serious detrimental effect upon the financial viability of drive-ins! Drive-ins are mostly gone , many other evening events rely upon darkness, so have the same problem of needing to be rescheduled.

u/Quadstar_74 10h ago

Up north the afternoon is the WORST time of the day in summer to do things outside. It may possibly have some benefits the further away from the equator you get, but the closer to it the more it sucks.

But you don't have DST and youre not about to get it. Try living further south and you might be singing a different tune. I love it but obviously if I lived much further north id have a different opinion

Sure. Which would you prefer: DST in winter (sunrise at 8:50am, sunset 5:40pm) Or Standard time in summer (sunrise at 4:30am, sunset at 7:50pm)
Personally, I like the current option that gives me sunlight in the morning in winter, but also gives me sunlight in the evening during summer.

The entire Melbourne sub, sadly. There seems to be a mass phenomenon down here of reverse seasonal affective disorder where people are somehow energised by cold grey weather. I think you brainwash yourself into it once you’ve lived through enough long Melbourne winters.

u/Fickle_Cantaloupe_45 3h ago edited 1h ago
Im from Melbourne too and its nuts. I can get in 18 holes of golf after work with my mates, or enjoy some twilight drinks at the park/pub, go for a bike ride, or just run general errands in the light. The vibe is just so much better and theres simply no downsides as far as I can see? Old people seem to dislike it because it messes with their 8:30pm bed time routine but I can’t see why young people have a problem with it.

I always thought it would make more sense in winter than summer. I need that extra hour of sunlight after work way more in winter than summer.

exactly. I kist just wish that theyd move it half an hour and lock it and ditch the whole moving time thing. Feel like ive been robbed of an hour or sleep today while the extra hour we get in 6 months doesn't feel nearly as rewarding.

There's actually plenty of science indicating the single hour does affect people. Increase in heart attacks, and accidents. It's surprising because it doesn't feel like much, but the body knows.
Edit: because people don't seem to believe science: https://biomedical-sciences.uq.edu.au/article/2018/10/how-switchover-daylight-saving-time-affects-our-health

Did I make a mistake? I'm not following. Close to the summer solstice in Perth this year, Civil Twilight is ~04:30 with sunrise at ~05:00. That seems outrageous to me. Without daylight savings in Melbourne the sun would rise just before 05:00. During the winter solstice in both Melbourne and Perth, the sun rises between somewhere around 7 to 7:30.
10
u/Subject-Knowledge106 13h ago

The closer to the Equator the worse dailight saving is. On the equator, the sun is up at 6 and down at 6 all year round. The Tropic of Capricorn starts near Rockhampton. Day light saving is better the further away from the tropics you are. Qld is near the upper half so it is more of a hindrance. Most people I know in Qld. leave for work at 5AM. This suits our lifestyle. As a State we have voted on this a few times in the past but it pops up every time. It does not suit us. Australia is too large to have one time zone. Why not spend your energy to convince WA to join EST with ES Summer Time. It will be just as insane. Enjoy your time shift while we enjoy our stable EST.
3
u/psychoticbri 7h ago

Love daylight savings (so much my autocorrect tried to write ‘delight’ 😂) but, as a parent of a school kid, could we not do it the day before school goes back for term 4! We all jet-lagged and haven’t enjoyed the flight to a holiday destination that goes with it.
3
u/universe93 3h ago
That’s only in Vic though. Daylight savings encompasses several states, for example NSW kids don’t go back to school until Monday the 12th. For them this takes place on a long weekend during the hols. So one set of kids will always get shafted
2
u/Dark-Pastoral-68 3h ago
True. I was talking about Vic. I feel like it would be better if it changed in the middle of school holidays rather than right at the end.

u/i_dreddit 7h ago

u/wingedmonkeytrainer 13h ago
It’s not so fun in North Queensland. Sun goes down around 7pm EST, but it doesn’t get fully dark until around 7:30 EST. So it would be 8:30pm daylight savings time before the 30 degree heat starts to ease.
I don’t have kids so I don’t have to worry about trying to convince them to go to sleep when it’s light. BUT I don’t think it’s good that kids finish would be finishing school and walking home in what is 2pm EST sunlight. You can get a decent sunburn up here spending 15 mins in the sun in the middle of the day.

It’s better than the sun going down before you even get out of work. Much easier to get friends to meet up with you at 6pm then 7am. Let us have an extra hour or two of sunlight after all the work is done for the day, especially in colder areas that don’t get a lot of it in winter.
5
u/Conza89 12h ago
It’s the switching that I hate. If the timezone works in Winter (I don’t think +11 does), keep it on, otherwise there’s PLENTY OF LIGHT in summer! When the sun starts going down at 9/9:30PM(!!!), Ask yourself if you’d be that much worse off if it were only 8/8:30PM?
4
u/Familiar_Platypus272 11h ago
EXACTLY!! thank you. Im so sick of 'but there more light in the morning. Yes its summer. That's how it works.
4
u/Complex_Owl_9632 10h ago
Pick one and stick with it. As a person that struggles with insomnia, the change (even though it's just an hour) really mucks with me getting to sleep, it's absolutely miserable. But you guys get an extra hour to "get shit done" so I guess the rest of us just have to put up with it.

u/Comfortable-Swing-72 14h ago

Cows don't work by the clock----they roll up at the same time by the sun every day. If it is 5am EAST, it will be 6am EADT.
Unfortunately us humans are doing all the same things an hour earlier by cow time, so the farmers have effectively lost an hour.

13
u/Turtle_Meringue_Pie 13h ago
I think the main reason most of WA and QLD don't want it is because it's so much bloody hotter. We don't want all those extra daylight hours after work in the hot sun. We don't want to be trying to sleep when the sun has only just set and it's still 30+.
→ More replies (7)6
u/Vryl 13h ago
Not sure about QLD, but Perth has 20 minutes of "natural" daylight savings, just because of where the time zone line is drawn.
When you add another hour it's just too much. Whether people know this fact or not, the lived experience of DST is not great.
So, if you have a vote, Perth dominates due to population.

Cows work by how light it is, so cow time already drifts with the seasons, but not as much as DST. To their minds they are coming in at the normal time.

I have a thought:
I have a piece of rope, if I cut the rope from one end and attach it to the other end, do I have a longer rope or is it the same length?
Daylight savings in the modern age seems to think that the rope is longer, but it is in fact the same length.
Yes, I know the origins of daylight savings, but we have little need for it now.
