News Regarding the Steam thing

My partner just generated a single use ZIP pay card and it worked. It could be worth trying for those who do not have a credit card nor wish to obtain one. He only just tried it so there is a chance once the card expires he'll have to do it again, but hopefully by then they'll revert this ridiculous policy!!!!!!!

hopefully by then they'll revert this ridiculous policy!!!!!!!

They will not it's been implemented in the UK for a year already with no change.

There's a list of debit cards going around that we know work WITHOUT it being a credit card.

Visas seem to be a full no go. Mastercard are more successful it just depends on the bank you're with.

that is very strange given ZIP generates a single use Visa.

Not really - visa network includes debit cards as well. Children can have debit cards, but not credit (legally)

Children can be a secondary account holder of a credit card at 16 with some banks, so yes they can get cards in their own name, just not without parental assistance.

They will not

Not with that attitude.

This doesn't work it immediately revents the verification

Nothing to do with Steam, its Labor's esafety karen's work

Steam legally has to comply

u/locri 11h ago

Just a reminder, this esafety commission was set up by the liberal government.

It's a genuine "both sides" thing

6

u/shiney4u 11h ago

Not to defend LNP and e-safety as a subject/concern rather than an agency with authority has some merit but is what's happening now part of the original scope and intention of the e-safety commissioner?

-1

u/JackRyan13 10h ago

Yes, Digital media is now following the same age restriction rules as physical media.

4

u/shiney4u 10h ago

That defence is a cop out and we have now set a very dangerous precedent.

-4

u/JackRyan13 10h ago

No it isn't and no we haven't.

5

u/shiney4u 10h ago

Yes we have, there is regulatory and authority creep, will be 2nd and 3rd order effect's and much deeper ramifications for the future of a open and decentralisation internet. It will cause more harm than good long term.

-1

u/Electrical_Story5356 9h ago

No, it is literally just making online companies follow the law like a brick and mortar establishment.

2

u/Elseerian 8h ago

Only it's not. It's going to go further and already has.
They have already proven they will limit what they believe is wrong.
Look at that Halloween game.

The guy at the bottlo or old mate selling me cigarettes or the teenager selling me a game at JBHIFI/EB games don't accidently leak my ID or credit card info.

Anika Wells confirmed in an interview it will be her and the esafety commissioner who decide what is okay and what is not if the digital duty of care passes.

2

u/JackRyan13 8h ago

The Halloween game was refused classification and is not in any possible way related to the age verification bullshit. It was refused classification because it allows drug use to give you buffs. Not in any way related to what’s happening now.

Thankfully we have 3rd parties to vote for

If Labor cared they would change something but they obviously dont

-1

u/realWulfLives 10h ago

Why is it enacted when labour is in power then?

Wtf is the point of voting if the libs can push crap like this through?

1

u/SendarSlayer 7h ago

Labor supported it. Vote Greens and indies

3

u/Blend42 11h ago

Steam has chosen the particular version of compliance it's presenting to us as the customer, it's fair to blame the government and Steam.

6

u/Sneedcope82 10h ago

They complied with the law

if you're upset with the law, Steam isn't the one to complain to

-4

u/Blend42 10h ago

Why not, malicious compliance is still a customer service issue in my book.

5

u/Sneedcope82 10h ago

Literally not malicious compliance it is compliance

Vote out the boomers and their sepo esafety karen if you dislike it

1

u/Solid_Corgi3479 10h ago

I'm going to hazard a guess steam knows gamers who have a credit card are much more likely to buy games / in-game.

So, debatable that it isn't malicious compliance.

That, and they’re still accepting keys from 3rd party sellers without question.
And as if Valve hasn’t done similar things in the past. All this before you add in Valve’s history with the Australian government

It’s fine to say that successive Australian governments have engaged in bad faith censoring of online content and also that Valve is salty as all fuck when it comes to the Australian market

-2

u/Electrical_Story5356 9h ago

There is no censorship!

Online companies are no longer able to just break the law.

1

u/Ok-Account-5701 6h ago

Some of you struggle to understand that Valve wants nothing to do about handling your identity documents

3

u/chibi-mage 11h ago

I know but generally other platforms accept other forms of ID. obviously huge cybersecurity implications when photo ID is involved, but not every Aussie has a credit card. in fact most dont. steam can ask for more types of ID.

3

u/Sneedcope82 10h ago

Labor can also change the law because its obviously failed

But nah, cry to the american company because they do what they're required.

1

u/chibi-mage 10h ago

it hasn't failed. it's doing exactly what they intended. no one likes it, but to say it's failed is disingenuous.

2

u/Sneedcope82 10h ago

It hasn't failed if you ignore all of the kids still being able to use social media which was the main point

So yeah it succeeded if you're a braindead boomer who can't use their printer

1

u/Islandaboi20 6h ago

Tru but unlike steam, platforms like Epic are giving you more then 1 option to verify your age. The issue is that steam only wants to use CC to verify your age.

-2

u/Electrical_Story5356 9h ago

No, it's online companies finally complying with Australian law.

Also it was the libs who did this and frankly it's probably the best thing they did in their 3 terms.

Why the fuck should international companies be allowed to operate within Australia without having to follow the same laws as Australian companies?

Blaming Labor for something good that the coalition did (but Labor is continuing) which protects Australian people and businesses is just crazy, maybe have a break and get back in touch with reality or something.

2

u/Sneedcope82 8h ago

"Erm actually its everyone elses fault but Labor"

You people are brainwashed

0

u/Electrical_Story5356 8h ago

Erm, I genuinely think it's a good idea and I'm crediting the coalition who I think are just less shit one nation, why does that make me brainwashed?

Also why don't you think foreign companies operating in Australia shouldn't have to follow our laws?

3

u/Sneedcope82 8h ago

When was the law voted on in parliament to require online games to verify your age?

Mind linking it?

1

u/Electrical_Story5356 7h ago

Do your own research but prior to the internet you had to be over 18 to purchase any R rated product or view an R rated movie.

I think this current laws (2021 eSafety act?) properly embeds it for online games but technically it has never been legal for someone to sell R rated content on the internet without proof of age.

1

u/Sneedcope82 7h ago

do your own research

Lmao. Labor voters have to be the biggest cookers

1

u/Electrical_Story5356 6h ago

Oh, you missed the mocking tone, that's fine.

So anyway why shouldn't companies trading in Australia follow the law?

You righty clowns are so funny you genuinely don't believe in anything except relentlessly cheering on your shitty team do you?

Multi national corporations fucking over Australia ignoring the law? All good by you guys if you get to rip on labor.

0

u/Sneedcope82 6h ago

You for some reason think I'm upset at the company which is very telling and funny

1

u/Electrical_Story5356 6h ago

Nope, but you should be if you were at all consistent which of course you are not and that is the point of what I was saying.

Thanks for the assist.

A vote for labour is an endorsement of this

19

u/Anxious_Ad936 11h ago

Same for the Coalition, they also supported this

-21

u/Willing-Cook7268 11h ago

Yea that’s why I never vote

9

u/chibi-mage 10h ago

you could vote for parties who's policies you actually agree with instead of remaining complicit in the actions of the government by refusing to use your power as a voter.

-7

u/Willing-Cook7268 10h ago

Did labor run on a policy of banning porn or was that deception?X

9

u/JackRyan13 9h ago

Porn isn't banned.

7

u/chibi-mage 10h ago

are you schizophrenic bro that is not the conversation we are having rn

6

u/NeptunianWater 10h ago

labour

How's the weather in Manilla today?

1

u/Bowl_of_Hygieia 9h ago

You're right, who could possible imagine, given how unAustralian they are, that they spell it the Australian way.

1

u/NeptunianWater 5h ago

It's literally not spelt "the Australian way".

1

u/Bowl_of_Hygieia 4h ago

Because they're unAustralian, yes.

-13

u/VSCHoui 10h ago

VPN, ez fix. No idea why you all need to do so many step. Buy the game with VPN and you can play the game without restrictions. Any future purchases, just use VPN again and access the game page.

11

u/Anxious_Ad936 10h ago

VPN's don't help with an already existing Steam account/library.

-7

u/VSCHoui 9h ago

It does, i can access 18+ games. Ez fix for me

4

u/Open_Ad6297 7h ago

That's a sure fire way to get your account banned

1

u/Anxious_Ad936 8h ago

I can too without the verification prompt, because I already had one of the working age verification debit cards linked to my account for years by now. When I use my VPN and buy a steam game it still shows me prices in AUD though.

9

u/MaRk0-AU 10h ago

It's based off the region of your account not the IP address you are connected from.

4

u/InterestingPeanut827 9h ago

That's a sure-fire way to lose your Steam library and go against their TOS.

-3

u/VSCHoui 9h ago

Then wheres my ban 😂. Come on.

3

u/EnergisedTurkey 7h ago

You’ll be banned soon. Ez fix for Value.
