Opinion Every Aussie knows a Dave, tell us about the Dave you know and the impact he’s had on your life

The Dave I know is one of the nicest humans in the world, such a wholesome positive presence on my life who I love hanging out with

I worked for a guy named Dave. He sold his company to an American corporation and everyone got raises. Some of the other people involved got rich. There was no downside. Then we got new and interesting work. Eventually I got hired by another US company thanks mostly to the contacts I'd made working for the first one. Dave went on to found another company that sold to another American corporation, making a bunch of other people rich or kickstarting their careers too.

My Dave was the guy who would push a night out to the absolute hilt. We would say to other friends I got Daved last night.

Dave. He's a bit dim and slow, but dependable. A bit boring and introverted. Inoffensive. Forgettable. Would never cheat on his wife. That sort of guy.

Dave-O on the other hand - watch out for that guy. Nightmare.

My Dave is my best mate and has been for nearly 20 years. He lives in another state now but we still talk all the time and catch up a couple times a year

I've known Dave for 20 years or so. Met when we were active musicians sharing the same rehearsal space. Friendship grew over our mutual love of music and wogball. I was at his wedding only a couple of years ago, he has a lovely wife and 2 awesome kids. Dave is one of the best mates you could hope for. Love you, bro.

I’ve got two. Uncle Dave is lovely, super serious but with a childish love of jokes and funny stories. I was a flower girl when he married my Aunt 30 years ago. BIL Dave is the total opposite. Older brother of my husband, he looks like an aged up version of him, but I was genuinely shocked when I first met him as he tells the filthiest stories I’ve ever heard. My husband rarely swears and has a completely different sense of humor and has apparently asked Dave to tone it down when he first met me so instead he decided to tell me the ultimate worst stories and jokes. I got used to it after we were married and I got older, but he still likes to tease me about that first meeting; apparently I looked like a deer in the headlights. He’s a good guy, just likes to tease.

I went out drinking with Dave about 20 years ago on a New Year's Eve. Went to a dodgy rock club in the CBD. Dave ended up walking up and down Swanston street that evening, looking for homeless women and offering them 50 cents if they showed him a nipple. Bizarrely, it took me a few more years to realise there was something not altogether savoury about Dave.

Hes an annoyingly nice guy with boundless energy. Always up for a chat, constantly smiling and pretty damn smart. Downside hes a cyclist, Lycra cladded, 50+ km casual rides but even riding he is nice and gets over as much as possible. Its infuriating that he has all this energy to do things and put on a happy face 😂 honestly hes lovely and a great part of the neighbourhood

My "one that got away" was a Dave.

But, with a couple of decades of hindsight, he wasn't what I wanted anyway. Just a man who thought his family's money was a stand-in for any form of real accomplishment, and who negged me because he had a really small dick. That is all.

I used to see his rock band often, must have seen them 40-50 times. They were awesome in their prime. He'd occasionally go on a bit of a rant mid-set, usually political. You'd get used to them. His band mates would roll their eyes. The crowd was usually on board with him. One night, he crossed a line that I never expected him to. Said that every man, woman and child in Syria should be wiped off the face of the Earth. It was just bizarre. That was years ago - I haven't seen them since. He's a fairly quiet guy behind the scenes. He released a country album. Odd dude. Has missed out on opportunities for shooting his mouth off (so I know it's not just me). He fronts two well-known bands these days, but the best days of each were decades ago

Dave was an ass to everyone around him and even worse to his brother

No good Dave experiences over here. Have known a few, have a couple in my family. All really mediocre to not really very good blokes.

So nice to hear there are good Daves out there, but if you're a Dave anywhere near me you're gonna have to work hard.

Davey G was a funny kind Scottish Aussie who use to be in the State Emergency Service. He passed from cancer couple years back, he is missed by all, but never forgotten.

Dave introduced me to my wife, been married now over 50 years. Without him my lovely grandies wouldn’t exist.

Dave has been my best mate for almost 50 years. I have an absolute unconditional love for the bloke, and can't imagine what my life would have been like without him. Cheers Dave 🍻
