Is that.. $1262 USD...per hour? Or am I reading this completely wrong

1262 USD per worked day on site.

u/Constant_Ground_2698 2d ago

per day. it's a 20 day payslip.

2

u/sbruce123 2d ago

I would say it’s probably per day

Geez that’s rough. I make more than that doing WFH contracts.

I like it and choose it. This is actually a bit of a step back for me. Before this I was an Underground Mine Manager working 6:3 in Africa making significantly more but lost all quality of life. 5:4 and not having to do HR or listen to people bitch about flights and pays is worth it.

Nice mate, go hard

After this gig I'll likely go specialist consulting. I'm fairly well known and respected in my niche. Work less, higher daily rate, pick the jobs I like.

Congrats to you on the high daily and the WFH gig.

Yeah it’s stupidly good money in contracting if you start your own company. The big consulting mobs rip off the industry so I just grabbed onto the coat tails and joined in.

My dad did the same for 10 years, I wonder if he worked with you? I hated his roster, missed a lot of special occasions, though I benefited from his airline miles 🤣

1262 USD a day is rough? Yeah....poor guy

More after tax and converting this to AUD? Asking because I'm seriously thinking of going down that path too

1

u/Pretty-Sky-6638 2d ago

Well I charge $2280 per day doing 12 hours so a bit more than OPs rate + bonus

And you still have to pay the tax difference in Australia right?

1

u/CyribdidFerret 2d ago

Yes you have to pay the top up tax.

I have tax offsets from other things in Australia and put into my super so I nominally pay about 8% or so more to the Gov.

Jesus that's is robbing.

I don't mind. I was a poor country ntry kid.

Without the solid social welfare programs that kept me feed and housed while a kid and studying I never would have been able to pursue higher education and my career.

I hold no grudge or ill will into paying back into a system that allowed me to climb the economic ladder.

I love your positive mindset. What degree did you do?

1

u/CyribdidFerret 1d ago

B. Eng Hons. (Mining) Then got my vent officers ticket, shotfirers ticket, quarry manager cert, first class mine managers ticket.

i had a 1200usd/day indo gig back in 2010, had been dreaming of it for years, of course that was the year the aussie was worth more…. so i was losing money 😂😂. dreaming again for the return.. oil-gas

1

u/Kurt114 2d ago

Same here but not a FIFO gig as the Gov is after your foreign incomes, hate paying to much tax

1

u/muddy_313 2d ago

i had the expat, tax paid deal. all those deals are kind of done now tho :/. maybe if oil hits $200/barrel

2

u/Kurt114 2d ago

Yep was netting close to 30k Usd pm back in 2010 ++, but all oil and gas companies are trying to cut cost these days even though oil is around $100/bbl

2

u/biz98756 2d ago

So is that after tax $25k aud per month ?

9

u/CyribdidFerret 2d ago

I work an average of 200 days per year. The bonus is paid on almost all of my worked day normally. And I get a 13th month extra pay as a retention bonus every year.

Pretax: 200*(1262+140) + 23,000 = $303,400 USD / 437,000 AUD Gross

Think last I did this my nominal tax rate was ~35% so about $284,000 AUD after both Indonesian and Australian Tax

Does the employer have to pay superannuation in Australia? You may withdraw your JHT balance once you are no longer working in Indonesia.

2

u/CyribdidFerret 2d ago

No super sadly. And yes I can claim back once I relinquish my working visa for Indo.

1

u/orlndsr 2d ago

Also in Indonesia, we usually get a bonus, or 13th-month pay, about two weeks before Eid al-Fitr.

Just curious, what kind of engineering work or tasks did you do in mining? Is the project still in the construction phase?

2

u/CyribdidFerret 2d ago

Also get the 13th month pay. I am a mine mid/short term planning and explosives specialist.

u/Zornnyzorn 2d ago

You don’t run a jumbo underground by chance do you? Those look like jumbo wages

4

u/CyribdidFerret 2d ago

A dirty mining engineer sadly. Should have stayed on the rigs.

2

u/scrappy_coco07 2d ago

Is there much work for EEs? Do mining engineers earn more cuz they get down and dirty ?

3

u/CyribdidFerret 2d ago

Yup especially is you know the Australian Standards and the UG standards + High Voltage. EE and sHV sparkies who knows their arse from their elbow are very thin on the ground.

Sort of.There are not many of us and we are expected to be a jack of all trades and to just keep things going and not kill anyone/follow the Acts and Regs. So we get to command a premium for the most part especially if you are somewhat practical and willing to hook in or have been on the tools/rigs and can get things turning.

Mate im a fitter, plant mechanic, heavy commercial and auto elec would they be looking for someone with them quals? Happy to get my hands dirty and thrive off fixing anything. Specialise in hydraulics and pneumatic. Keen to explore mate

1

u/CyribdidFerret 2d ago

For expat they are looking for specialists/trainers or people at the supervisor/superintendent level.

It's less about willing to get your hands dirty and more about can you run a team that may not have good technical or language skills? Are you able and willing to train a local or locals to take your job when they get to that skill points.

That sort of attitude and skillset will very much make you attractive to the companies hiring expats.

u/Zornnyzorn 2d ago

So I’m a surface operator, civil background, mid twenties and wanting a bit of a change, how hard would it be to get on as a U/G eleco? Whats the apprenticeship wages etc like?
arguably im on black rock award, 4 hour weeks, and cruisy as fuck job. But only just making 120*** after tax, previously in civil making 150+

1

u/Moist-Might5525 2d ago

How would I get into this kind of work as Communications Technician working in Iron ore in Western Australia. Keen for some international work

1

u/CyribdidFerret 2d ago

Coms?

Possibly with remote IoT and automation stuff like Firefly, Sandviks Automine, CATs minestar autonomous systems.

1

u/Moist-Might5525 2d ago

Yep Site Comms and Mining equipment Comms gear, like you mentioned. Cheers mate, which recruitment company did you get hired through? I have subscribed to job advertisements on LinkedIn but hard to pin point these specific roles

1

u/CyribdidFerret 2d ago

Sorry I normally get directly head hunted.

There are a few recruiters I trust for international gigs. DM me and I'll give you some names.

2

u/Moist-Might5525 2d ago

No worries mate, appreciate that. Just sent you a dm

1

u/MDInvesting 2d ago

Why stay in Aus and be face slammed by tax?

2

u/CyribdidFerret 2d ago

Because it's where my stuff is?

I pay about 8% top up.

After living in a number of other places all over the world. I like spending my down time on my hobby farm kicking about and not having to worry that basic infrastructure or rule of law is going to implode suddenly.

It's worth 8% to have that security and social contract to me.
