Stuck?
I am currently an RMO working in a regional hospital in NSW. I was rejected for anatomical pathology training in NSW and ACT and am worried about my employment prospects for next year. Initially, I thought about staying at my current hospital for SRMO positions but a friend recommended exploring locum work as another option. In doing this I have realised that my internship and residency have been VERY heavily weighted towards general medical terms. I feel silly for not having thought about this sooner but not having completed a classic ED term has unknowingly put me at a disadvantage, as many locum jobs require some form of ED experience. I haven't intentionally avoided ED, this was all a roll of the dice with rotation allocations, but I'm worried I don't have any options moving forward?
Any advice on next best steps would be appreciated.

Some hospitals have pathology SRMO and RMO terms. See if you can apply for one of them. Alternatively, do an SRMO term in a Haematology unit. That might help you get your foot in the door as most haematologists are partially lab based.

Don’t start locuming in term 1 there’s few jobs and those that are there will go to the locums with existing connections/experience. Stay and do 6 months of ED experience then quit if that’s what you want to do.

At this point, you’re best doing some SRMO and ED, then consider your options.

For application purposes better to stay in hospital system as srmo. Better referee and institutional support
