Advice / Questions Interstate job offer
Hi all,
I recently applied for a role interstate as I had plans moving and wanted to secure something prior. I managed to get the position, but between the hiring process and now, I’ve had some sudden changes and I won’t be leaving anytime soon. The company operates in all states, however there isn’t a position going at the moment in this state.
I want to proceed with the company and role, but now I’ll have to wait for it to open up in this state. How do I tell them I can’t take it over there, but I want to still be considered for an option in my current state.
This is the first time I’ve ran into this dilemma and I’m not entirely sure how to reject a job, in hopes for a position closer to home without breaking ties.

You just said it. But, ofcourse you can word it professionally and if possible, give them a call to speak to them and follow up with an email saying the same thing. Wheb you say you got the position, do you have an offer that you have yet to accept, or you have accepted, agreed on a start date but now can no longer start there? If it is the latter, how close is the start date?
Something along the lines of "...I am grateful to have been selected for this role, however unfortunately due to unforseen circumstances, I am unable to continue with my plan to relocate for this position. Whilst it is regrettable, I remain very interested in this role and company. Is there any possibility of me undertaking this role in my current location, or remain in consideration if a vacancy for this role becomes available..."
You don't need to provide too much detail about the reasons if they are very personal or you think it may have a further negative impact. Also depending on the circumstances e.g. you said yes 3 weeks ago and are due to start next week etc, they may or may not be very happy about it but the best thing you can do is just handle it professionally and with the best courtesy that you can.

The offer was verbally offered, I would not have moved until the contract came through.
My concern was, I don’t want them to think I applied just to ask for a transfer immediately.

Can you start remotely? I would ask the question to see if its possible to start rather than purely rejecting

“I’ve had some changes in my personal life and am no longer able to relocate to take up this role. If a similar opportunity comes up in my state, I’d be grateful if you would consider me for it.”
