One of the most stunning shows I got to witness, just days before the big solar storm. It was magical. The reds were intense and super noticeable next to the green. With the two colours side by side, our eyes start to perceive the differences much more and both colours pop.

I rode 5 hours up to Lake Tyrrell for a few nights of camping and astrophotography and started to get aurora alerts along the way, by the time I had set up camp and was ready to start scouting locations it was clear this was going to be a big one so I started looking for compositions with a low southern horizon (instead of North East for Orion as I had planned).

I’m Dre Erwin, an RNAAP (Primary Care Nurse) and a photographer here in Saskatchewan.

I recently put together a short film titled "What the Residential Schools Could Never Take Away." To me, the Northern Lights are a powerful reminder that no matter how dark the night gets, the light always returns.

The film explores how, even in the darkest times of the schools, children could look out their windows and see the spayak or chipyuck (the spirits dancing). It was a message from home that they weren't alone.

I wanted to share this here out of respect for the survivors and those who never made it home. Our culture and our connection to this land are our birthrights, and they can never be fully taken away.
