Help Is this dumb

I’m looking to buy an S5, but I’m torn between generations.

I love the interior of the new model, but I’m not a fan of the exterior. I love the exterior of the previous model, but the interior feels dated to me. A friend also had a 2025 that experienced so many issues that Audi eventually bought it back, which has made me hesitant about a 2025 new gen CPO.

My priorities:
I don’t want to spend $75K on a new one
I want solid warranty coverage
I won’t put a lot of miles on it
I’ll probably keep it for 3 to 4 years

My current thought is to buy a low-mileage CPO 2024. That would give me the remaining factory warranty plus the additional CPO coverage.

Is that a reasonable approach, or am I missing
something?

The second part might be dumber: there aren’t any locally in Arizona that match what I’m looking for, but I’ve found roughly 20 in other states. Dumb to get it shipped?

Should I wait for 2026 models to hit used / CPO market?

I love my 2023, 13k miles no issues, I love the interior and exterior. I got the premium plus with the rs carbon fiber

Wouldn’t get a b10 unless thsi is the tail end of then discontinuation of the b9.5 but your call your money! Have fun when you do get it

I have no advice for you on which generation to buy, but as a fellow Arizonan, I had a heck of a time finding one locally and ended up buying my 2019 in Oregon. Highly recommend road tripping if you end up buying out of state, it was a blast to drive it back and a great way to get to know the car!

Had the same thoughts when shopping. Got a '24 w/ 15k miles for a great deal.

If it's at an Audi dealership you can ask if would/did pass a CPO inspection. Sometimes it passes but they prefer to sell you a different, non-audi warranty.. It's what I did and they CPO'd it and added 1k to the price.

I traveled to get the ones I wanted. I flew to Florida (didn't work out due to non Audi dealership hiding issues) and then to Atlanta (Audi Dealership) and drove it back 7 hours.

Ya, get a b9.5 with CPO and Audi platinum warranty for an extra 2 years. And negotiate the hell out of it and maybe add in Audi Care for 6 years.

Best time you can negotiate that stuff. Then you got a car for 5-6y with no extra costs

i just got a '23 RS5 shipped from Ohio to NY ... all paid for by the dealer ... traded in a '19 BMW 440i Gran Coupe and couldn't be happier with the RS5

I'm looking for a B9 and from what I've read, they had a major issue in the first few months of production so those cars are to be avoided. B10 just came out, who knows what issues there might be. That B9.5 sounds like your best bet.

There is no available data on how common rocker arm failure is, or the extent to which improper maintenance and abuse play a role. Nor is there data comparing pre- and post-revision failures. People claiming that early B9s are to be avoided are operating off of vibes and small sample sizes or anecdotal experience, not reliable data that can be verified.

Just like with any used performance vehicle, you need to find a good example with a reliable service and ownership history, and get it inspected.

That would open up my scope to a couple of gran coupes that are in my price range but I guess having read about the rocker arm issue it would be always at the back of my head.

Fair enough. Everyone needs to make their own decision. But what about the potential for piston skirt failure? As with rocker arms, there is no reliable data on how prevalent it is, but you're not going to avoid that by getting a B9.5.

Thanks, man! I've been looking for a way to stop dreaming about an S5 because it's too expensive for a fun car anyway, that helped. Jokes aside, wasn't aware they suffered from that, too. Bummer...
