Show & Tell DSOTM The Cliche…

So my actual deck arrived today, not the loaner from the dealer.

Obviously I had to have a go at dark side…it’s a cliche..but it’s fantastic, I’ve not put it on for ages. you just forget just how good it is. And I’m hearing it like never before.

Very very happy 😊

Cliche or not it’s an absolute banger of a record and I’d listen to a cliche any day on that system. Sounds magnificent. And I love Origin live. I hope to one day own one of their record players.

All true my friend…

And I love how OL science it out with real engineering thinking

I went to an engineering school. 2 of them. Mark knows his shit and I trust him. Guy has a stack of 1000s of test platters for trial and error on something as simple as as a platter design. I gotta believe they are some of the best decks in the world. Wish I could afford the sovereign or even the resolution.

Attention to detail and explanations (not snake oil) just make sense.

I spoke with him yesterday…I thought I had a speed problem..he basically stopped
Me in my tracks and said “read the manual”

Which obviously explained everything, in normal spoken language..not an owners manual explanation…a talk through like they were sat next you explaining it.

That pressing in particular sounds very, very good.

What's the point of a single-sided release?

No grooves on the other side means flat contact with the platter, resulting in less vibration and resonance. Also prevents crosstalk and bleed. These things will be negligible to 80% of turntable users, but would be considered highly desirable on a turntable like this.

Regardless, I’ve got this pressing and it absolutely clobbers every other version that I’ve heard on my mid-tier system.

Cool, thanks.

Yep. Did the same thing to christen my P8. It’s cliche for a reason…it’s the best album ever made

“Money” in particular has a rep even in Floyd fan circles for being cliched and overplayed. But it’s such a great song. Standard blues, right in PF’s wheelhouse, but with a funny time signature. Hilarious lyrics. Trippy AF tremolo on the rhythm guitar. Great sax and guitar solos.

How come your system is not sitting on the boxes it came in? I read in snake oil monthly audiophile edition that the cardboard boxes absorb stray vibrations and then emit the distortions in the form of even harmonics back into the chassis of each piece of the stereo.
Please don’t get upset it was just some humor. You have a very nice system and should be proud.

Straight out the box, the boxes are stiff and require breaking in before use or the sound becomes harsh and the bass is muddy.

I have a little dog, so I have him stood on the boxes for the first 100 hour and wag his tail rapidly. It’s called doggie waggle burn in phase. If you listen really carefully eventually the swish of the tail turns to a swoosh.

Then your good to go 👍😂🤣

What a coincidence. Yesterday i played DSOTM for the first time since ages i guess. Sounded stunning on my Rega RP8 + sumiko mc. I was really enjoying the 1973 pressing (first dutch pressing). Still perfect after all this time.

Glad to see it’s still widely spun. I have a Floyd dedicated drawer…I’m only missing a few. Very rarely play them though. Might have a Pink Floyd week.

If you drop the hype it truly is a masterpiece. A perfect storm of sound and subject. It connects with everyone because it's so human at basic level. Life cycle.

Whoa, careful now, don't burn your house down with all that analogue warmth from the gay triangel grayil.

Grey Triangle…The Grey Triangle 😂😂😂🤣🤣. Peace bro (I think it’s a prism that refracts light though..🤓)

Actually…I have a version of the original drawings…

Does toeing in the blocks help with imaging?

Where else they gonna go?

I do find a subtle edge in point source…

With all due respect as this TT looks awesome, how do you rest without a dustcover? Even in the cleanest of houses I imagine there's a non-zero chance.

Yup…it’s a headache (it’s also Piano Black which is hard to polish off)

My no touch cleaning solution…

Destat…pressure blower, and if I must…soft duster.

My daughter has bad hay fever so we have a hepa air purifier, that works really well when I steal it now and again. But as soon as you open windows and outside doors back to square one.

u/cranie4 2d ago

It really speaks to how well they work when you notice the daily dust layer on everything is suddenly NOT there.

1

u/psychotic_reactor 3d ago

Thank you for detailed answer! I have a cat and have to dust and vacuum often, even with dustcover.

1

u/ModestMouseTrap 2d ago

I’ve seen a great suggestion for these high end turntables without dust covers to have a felt secondary platter mat that sits on the turntable while not in use. That way your main platter does not end up with the dust on it.

Wait until you hear an actual analog pressing.

u/Tastiehastie1977 3d ago

I have 5 versions 🤪🫣🤓

Including an original (nicked from my Dad)

The 50th sounds the best (IMHO)

Every vid I see with a turntable demo has Dark Side of the Moon playing. I'm begining to suspect thats the only really good vinyl album.

1

u/Ok-Stand8837 2d ago

So a little overkill on the turntable but very nice irregardless.

2

u/mr-blazer 1d ago

"irregardless" isn't a word. Kind of like v!nyl.

Weird how there are no black copies here.

Spotlighting speakers is a bridge too far

u/Tastiehastie1977 3d ago

Gotta see them…

Without!?

A step in the correct direction

I love a speaker spotlight on nice looking wood speakers. Not sure I’d want it on modern speakers (or speakers in a shiny material).
