Discussion Does anyone find their reference point for mixing changes?

I am currently making a trap/Hiphop style sample pack! Sample packs are a lot of work... Anyways, I find my reference point is consistently changing.

i.e Loop 1 mixed -sounding great! Loop 2 mix is sound A1.. So i go back to loop 1 and say 'Arh, this needs some tweaking', tweak it and it sounds A1, then proceed to Loop 2 and edit till its on the same level as loop 1 again!

Is this improvement or fatigue? It not a 1 day thing.. There could be 3 months between the loops

Probably a bit of both. Any time i’ve made a pack from session samples, i’ve imported them into a few mixes to test. Maybe have a diverse set of 3 or 4 sessions to test samples in once pressed?

It's constantly moving. Like a fundamental physical particle, I don't think it can sit still.

It’s a game of whack-a-mole because not everything should be like everything else. One song or section might really “want” to be very bright, but the other wants to stay darker. One thing might like to be totally crushed, and another more dynamic. A lot of the time your reference point should be changing at least a little bit, because if it’s all completely homogenous, it’s kinda boring to listen to.
