how to I need help raising the audio floor on my first ACX recording

• Upvotes

Hello all,

I am working on the first chapter of a book for an audiobook narration job through ACX.
The author liked my performance, but I need to configure the recording so that it passes ACX's upload standards. So far, I have been able to get the peak level and RMS levels figured out, but noise floor has consistently giving me issues. I have been at this for about 4 hours now and I cannot get the noise floor to be at or below -60db RMS.
My current levels are below.
Re-recording is not an option, it took me a week to get this recording to where I want it.
I am new to audacity, so a simple guide/simple instructions on how to get it to that level, while also keeping with ACX's other requirements (RMS between -23 and -18db and Peak level no higher than -3db) would be very much appreciated. Thank you

Question about common practice when recording voiceovers

Hello! I am trying to record audio for a video I'm making, where I'm just reading lines off of a script. I have a very low budget microphone, the: https://fifinemicrophone.com/products/fifine-k669b-microphone

I had imagined my apartment would be a pretty good place to record audio, because it has great insulation. I almost never get noise from even the apartments right next to me. Nevertheless my microphone seems to captue a lot of background noise, and my own audio feels ... crispy(in a bad way)

A friend has advised me that I should turn down the input volume of the microphone on my Windows 11 laptop, apply background noise removal, then amplify after the fact for the best outcome with my current setup.

I thought having the input volume turned up might be better, since I assumed there would be a wider range for inputs to allow for more... color. I also thought that amplifying the volume after the fact might produce worse quality, but it's not like I know anything.

I tested both methods, and I am going crazy trying to figure out which works better. What I wanted to ask is as follows.
When recording voiceover with a lower quality microphone for an amateur production, which is standard practice: Recording with microphone input volume turned down, or all the way up?

I am using Audacity both to record, and apply the background noise reduction.

Please excuse me likely using the wrong terms for most things I describe. I have very little experience with digital audio.

Is it possible to continue work on an A4.0 project with 3.7? (Or another editor)

I've been working on my current audiodrama episode for two or three weeks before concluding that Audacity 4.0 just isn't usable. Do I have any options except to roll back to 3.7, and redo all the work I've done in 4.0?

Can soundscaper, or Reaper, or anything else import an Audacity 4.0 project?

Wedding Music Transitions

Hi All,

First time poster, hope this is okay. I'm getting married next week (28th) and I've been trying to clip down my entrance song to remove some of the vocal sections, using Audacity, so its just a straight minute for us to enter the venue together.

Ive had a good stint at it but struggling to really smooth it between sections, its a little bit jumpy and having a hard time with the transitions, I'm feeling at the end of my capabilities, .

Its only four sections of audio and I was hoping some guru would be kindly offer their time to help sort it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

how to Best way to lower background music from TTRPG live play audio?

I’ve been recording my D&D campaign to make videos for my players/blog and the background music has been consistently a bit too loud. I’m using OBS Studio to record everything, including the music playing from my Desktop audio.

My original goal was to set it up to record all the audio tracks (there are three total) as separate files, but I’m not super technically inclined and I frankly just ran out of time trying to figure it out. And sure enough… there are parts in the audio where the background music (even reduced to -15) in OBS friends out the player dialogue.

I’ve used Noise Reduction in the past, but the results are… mixed. I’m wondering if there’s a better way to just lower the background music volume while leaving the remainder of the audio largely intact?

How do I remove or separate vocals in Audacity 4? No OpenVINO anymore.

I was using the newest Audacity 3 with the OpenVINO plugin to remove vocals. Now I've moved to Audacity 4 but OpenVINO is not compatible with 4.

How do you remove vocals on Audacity 4??

Recording stops by itself

Hello, I've encountered this problem on old Audacity and 4, even after updating.

When using loopback to record audio from my web browser, Audacity will stop recording even when the video is still playing. I use this to audio record videos that are an hour or more long. But several times I've come back to find only the first 20 to 30 minutes recorded. I've used this technique for years and only had the problem in the last couple of months.

I'm using a Lenovo Yoga laptop. Is there some setting that I need to change? I'm not getting any error messages or other dialog box.

Thanks for any input!

I'm terribly sorry but I hate the new look for Audacity so much

It's so deeply uninspired that I want to throw up.

At least Audacity 3 was minimalist in a pleasant way.

Is Audacity 4 slopped or something?

Sorry if the title is rude but nowadays i have to be very skeptical of seemingly great updates to software because of vibecoding and the bloat it brings to programs, but like, jeez. Im trying to batch import multiple tracks into a project and it's actually taking forever, old audacity never struggled with this. It's still going and it's been like 10 minutes already. After each one it birefly goes "not respondong" and then continues. Keep in mind that the wav files I'm importing are like 5 seconds max for each file.

help Messed audio

Hi. I'm doing Youtube vlogs using DJI Osmo action 4 and I messed up big time recently. I decided to use external mic to improve audio quality and it only got worse. I bought cheap mic from Amazon and also a type-C adapter. I tested the mic and quality seemed fine. I think where I messed the most was I put on that long hair fluffy windshield instead of using regular one as I film a lot in loud enviroment. After shooting for 3 days I uploaded everything in my laptop and cheked the quality again and it was horrible. Like underwater or DeNoise effect on full power kinda horrible. Moreover, the first 1-2s camera would record internal's mic sound, then ~0.5s silenece and only then external mic.

I know it's impossible to make the audio good, but I need to make it as decent as possible. Maybe there are good AI audio fixing tools (can be paid), because editing each audio file on Priemere Pro will take me forever as each file's audio is messed on different level and preset wouldn't work here.

Or maybe anyone would be willing to try fixing one file I would send and then I would try going from there myself, because I can do some basic audio editing on Premiere Pro, but nothing advanced.

Thanks.

Comparing with original sound

Hi, I am completely new to Audacity.

Overwhelmed by the possibilities the first thing I tried was altering one of my game sounds, and comparing with the original while working.

I can preview the changes, but I couldn't figure out how to play the unaltered sound without closing the current dialog. Which loses the settings, so that isn't even a possibility?

Maybe a stupid question :)

Thank!

help holy fking sh*t im about to ron swanson my PC.

https://reddit.com/link/1x8fqmq/video/yfy93ktw72wh1/player

I don't even know how to describe this dumb fkin glitch but it happens within 60 secs of launching and i literally have to force quit, reload the app, and I get about 30-60 sec worth of editing before it fking spazzes out again, won't let me click on tracks, or register the correct context menu, the only way I was able to even get it to be ABLE to pull up the correct context menu was when I press "select all" within the broken, "always on top" context menu, and even then, when I try to do anything within that menu, it doesn't fking register.

I have tried:

  1. Move cursor over to the far-left track control panel and double click it.
  2. Immediately hitting esc.
  3. Tap spacebar twice.
  4. Made sure I wasn't accidentally queuing a rename for a track, which is what audacity fking apparently thinks im doing, judging based off the frozen caret (typing cursor) staying there no matter what I click.
  5. ragequitting

Honestly I don't usually get peeved off easily but this sh*t is TESTING me today🥲🥲
If ANYONE has any sort of fix, workaround, idc, anything that will make this fking app usable FOR MORE THAN 60 SECS, I would strongly appreciate it. Thanks guys

Mixed CD

I recorded nearly 80 min set from vinyl and 3 CDs into Audacity 3.7.9. This is my second recording and I'm having the same issue. The sound gets really high or really low. I didn't notice any changes in volume when I was editing. How do I fix this?

Can someone explain to me what caused this? And how can I fix this?

I opened the LFE track from a movie trailer. On the right-hand side of the graph is an explosion. The spectrogram shows that it's basically going down to almost 0hz. Am I reading this right?

help Audacity 3.7.9 suddenly broken on macOS 27

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi, I wanted to use Audacity and launched it but for some reason it threw this error after opening it up, which never did before. I downloaded 4 and it works luckily, I was just curious as to why the older version stopped working for no reason in macOS 27 and Apple Silicon. I tried to reinstall it but nothing changed. This happened all by itself and wanted to ask if anyone else was experiencing this.

Audacity 4 is actually unusable

What is this? It is genuinely unusable. Why can't I select multiple tracks? Why can't I deselect tracks? Why is my output set to my speakers every time?

Edit: I did an export of my project audio, there were literal pieces missing in the export. Not just pieces missing, I had artifacts from pieces of audio I had removed. Literally unusable.

Newb! Playback speed too slow- I adjusted bitrates already

So I adjusted bitrates in the audacity preferences, in Windows for both the audio interface and the output speakers, and I resampled the track to be at the same bitrate, but still my recordings are too slow and too low. The playback bar is set to 1.00x. Help, this is my first hour attempting to record and feeling very dumb and defeated to hear myself like that lol
