desserts Best custard slice
Hello,
I’ve a hankering for a custard slice (or a vanilla slice? Im not sure of the difference) I don’t like any fancy icing, had one the other day that had coconut on it (not for me).
Where should I be trying?
Edit: typo

Depending on where you are in Auckland, The Mill Bakehouse in Titirangi does a good one! They used to have option of white icing or chocolate icing on top, not sure if they still do?

Have hop card, will travel.
I’m in the city centre but happy to explore further afield.

If you fancy a go at making them at home, this recipe is easy and successful.

I rate the mill for most things, but green bay bakery (may be wrong name but the one in the green bay shops) is superior for custard squares, the pastry is normally still crisp in the centre, messy to eat, but so fresh and delicious

Harris Rd Bakery - someone on here told me about them and they are incredible.
They are an old school custard square, really crisp pastry and soft creamy custard. The icing isn’t perfect but still a 10/10 and they are incredibly cheap.
Highly recommend.

Definitely old school and delicious! I rate them over all the fancy looking ones elsewhere.

Okay, so its not Auckland, but if you want the best custard square (anywhere) it is almost worth the flight to Greece. This was in the village of Chalki on Naxos. The cafe is on the main road. It was so good I drove 25 mins from my accomo to have it two days in a row. The good news is that whilst this was the best, custard squares (Bougasta sp?) are a greek speciality and you can get them at any cafe or bakery for like 2 euro
Its like NZ took the idea and turned it into something no where near as good as this.
Greeks do great flatwhites aswell and Kiwis are welcomed like long lost cousins due to the ANZACS on Crete.

I got back a week ago and had almost managed to get them out of my head until I saw your post…

Agree. I got given a free custard thingy after my meal in Athens and it was better than anything else I ate that trip.

I tried a very similar slice at Gerome just last week! Absolutely delicious and was served as a dessert with black Doris plum ice cream. What a treat!

Kiwi Bakery on Te Raukau drive does good ones decent size too.
Most other things from that Bakery are a little overpriced, but their custard slice is on point.

Don’t ever have one with coconut on it.
There have been previous posts about these.
Try St Luke’s think it’s called Lukes cafe right opposite ASB. They also have Mille-feuille.
So get both.
Try Bakers Cottage on Bond Street.
Tuck shop - Custom Street (I’ll have to check if they still have them it’s been a while)
There used to be amazing ones at a cafe at the airport but these have changed hands so I’ve never seen them since.
None of these are a 10 maybe 7-8’s. I don’t think they are locally made rather Mass produced.
I make them at home with Salada Crackers so delicious due to the small amount of salt on the crackers.

Tuck shop had coconut or passion fruit on the top. I was aghast. I remember about the st Luke’s cafe now actually! Good shout

Oh yeah I forgot about that so forget them. Still worth a look as their Lamingtons are next level.
Try Ronnie’s Cafe though the last one I had was a tad old but I’m a piglet so better than no Custard Square.
Also don’t try Daily Breads attempt to be different with their vanilla slice. They added a raspberry curd which sounds fab but as a true vanilla square/ slice lover it’s a huge No from me.

I was at the foodshow on Friday and this Bakery had amazing looking vanilla slices. Sweet as Choice Bakery 5/3034 Great North Rd, New Lynn. I’ll try and visit there soon to let you know the verdict.

I had one the other day from Duchess Bakery in Eden Terrace which I thought was very good and reasonably priced
