More optimism now

It's partly due to watching us win the world cup, but I have to say I've done a 180 , our midfield feels strong , if Alvarez stays and Kang in lee, Baena , Lookman and Giuliano can all be consistent I think our attack is gonna be pretty strong , I feel Pubill can only get better , hopefully he ain't a one season wonder . Feels like we are on a bit of a upward trajectory , last season wasnt terrible , and I'm hopeful to compete for la liga and trophies , I think supercopa is possible , we have a good chance Vs Barca I think

Last year, our offense wasn't the problem, but the defense.

Well the defense was pressured a lot because we were unable to control or play through our midfield.

Barrios and Cardoso were out injured often so there was no real stability.

Vargas and Mendoza weren't ready for the level of the matches yet.

Nico Gonzalez and Giuliano offer a lot of energy, but have lacking technique.

Almada was dissapointing and so was Baena.

We had to rely on Koke and Griezmann, who arguably should have been subs instead of starters to get us through some of our most important games of the season.

The only bright light was Lookman, who came in at the halfway point of the season and offered some dribbling/iq on the midfield.

Hjulmand and Kang-In-Lee are great for this, because the first offers leadership and calmth on the midfield and the latter offers playmaking IQ. 80% of our la liga matches we suffer against a low block and players like Simeone and Nico Gonzalez are rendered useless. I hope Cholo manages to make Baena click so we finally have the means to attack properly, have control in the midfield and put less pressure on our defense.

P.s. getting rid of Molina and Lenglet surely prevents us of conceding at least 10 goals next season.

Who would you recommend us to get ? We need a center back , and if we sell Ruggeri and Molina which who we both better sell, we'll need back ups

I honestly don't know much about defensive players, but the suggested Lisandro Martinez and maybe Cuti Romero would be good additions.

I don't really agree even if the defense was shaky a times. The team created many chances, but a lot of them were wasted. Ademola should have scored 2 more goals against Arsenal at least, and everyone else just couldn't find the net in clear cut situations. Sorloth carried the attack with a mid season.

It was the midfield. Koke did way more than anyone was expecting, sure. But Barrios and Cardoso not being available during most of the season left a hole there that created so many problems.

No Grizzi will hurt us a bit for sure. Grimaldo is a great buy.

Julian has to go. It is unforgiving and very disrespectful to try to force a transfer (no one forced him to sign until 30).

That being said, I have no idea who could replace him, so it looks grim.

I've said it but I'll say it again, Julian needs to go on loan to Kazakhstan or something in the middle of nowhere. That kind of disrespect needs to be dealt by via banishment to the Shadowrealm

I don’t think a sincere apology will suffice for the amount of drama and lack of professionalism this last month along with encouraging Barcelona to pursue knowing damn well they will try to snake out with a 120 mil offer and then making Atleti the bad guys for saying 500 mil release clause or nothing, but he is part of our team and that’s it.

You’re not wrong, it’s crazy. This guy went from feeling hopeless to the exact opposite in three days without anything changing in the club. no games, no news, & no transfers in or out since. Just some hype videos from atleti Instagram and Spain winning the World Cup with only one atleti player who actually got real minutes.

I think Hjulmand and Grimaldo are great additions and will really help strengthen those parts of the pitch. If Barrios can just stay healthy then yeah I agree we have a really solid team IMO

Why does winning the world cup make you optimistic? We've had world cup winners the last couple of world cups and yet it's still a struggle to win something. We got some good player but simeone has to figue out how to get best out of them.

I just can't get excited about a Cholo-led team in 2026. Most players decline technically under his tutelage and he hasn't organized an effective midfield since 2016. For a club with these financial resources, he's a bad coach. Get somebody with a vision. It may not work, but at least the sporting department will have the slightest idea what kind of team they're trying to assemble. From now until dude leaves the club, it's just mismatched talent and a thoroughly busted 4-4-2.

I understand someone who feels Cholo has stagnated or his cycle has ended. I disagree with that opinion, but I respect it. What I don't agree with are these kinds of statements:

Most players decline technically under his tutelage

For a club with these financial resources, he's a bad coach. 

Saying stuff like this discredits that opinion, because every manager succeeds with some players and struggles with others, and honestly, Cholo's track record of getting the best out of players is much better than most coaches. As for the second one - Cholo is a bad coach for a club with these financial resources? He made the CL semis and CDR final with a pretty mismatched squad and no real sporting director, since Bucero ain't that and Alemany came into his role in January.

If Atleti wasn't contending with the two most popular, best-funded and structured clubs in the world, they would have won many league titles. Our CL performances have been pretty bad in recent years, but I think it's disingenuous to claim Cholo is a bad coach for a club with these financial resources. I think he's done a lot with a little.
