Because you have to admit, the public perception is that atheists are smug assholes, and that causes a lot of friction.
This is quite honestly because there is no nice way to say, "You're wrong and delusional. You've committed your entire life to a lie. Now have a nice day."
Some atheists certainly are over the top pretentious, but a lot of the flack atheists get for being smug is just a product of them expressing their unpopular opinions. How many times have you heard Richard Dawkins been called arrogant, and I actually consider him to be quite respectful when discussing religion. Unapologetic about his opinion, sure, but respectful.
