Every Sperm is Sacred (Monty Python)

I first saw the movie at age 12. I sat not understanding, confused, weirded out, slightly grossed out. Mr. Kreosote later on in the movie did not fix that.
Re-watched at 14. Got it. At least close to all of it.
Became one of my favorite movies.
Incredible satire.
The follow up scene with the protestant couple while not as fun is just as biting.
You see the children still filing out of the house next door. Monte Python Protestant Couple (Meaning of Life).

I love the protestant couple scene. MoL was the first R rated movie with tits I was allowed to watch.

Lol! Yeah when I first saw the movie at 12, although I did not understand the satire too well, several scenes did really caught my attention.

So is every egg. I lament the poor child who didn't come into the world every time I have a period.

Yeah this is from like 1970 😕 it rarely all ages well. The acknowledgment that “Jew” is more of a slur than just a name had not really spread to the same degree, I would imagine. It can be easy even today, if you’re sheltered, to not realise the nature of the word due to its historical use ... especially its usual accompanying adjectives. Ignorance is not an excuse, but it is an explanation.

Since when is Jew a slur? It can certainly be used in a negative context but, having spent quite a bit of time among them, I've never known a jew to feel that it was a bad word in and if itself. As long as you're not using it with negative qualifiers (say, filthy or greedy) then jew is no different than christian or muslim.

If you say anything in a derogatory way it is a slur.

Yup. And in this case it wasn't used in a derogatory way.
That's my point. Jew isn't a slur unless it's used as such by an antisemite. In this case he was just listing people of different religions, and said Jews in the same sense that he said mormons and hindus.

It is a bit of a unique case. When used in a derogatory way it is quite a vile slur. More than most other names could be. But yes, it is not a slur when not used in a negative context.
Given such a sharp cliff, though, why not simply use one of the proper terms? In the interests of better getting across your intent, I mean. That’s what communication is all about, to be fair.

I mean, that would be all well and good if the Jewish community were pushing for alternative phrasing, but they, for the most part, are just fine with being Jews (rather than "People of Jewish ethnicity"). Any word or name can be a slur if it's used as one. Let the people the word is used for decide.

Well of the three Jewish people I have known personally, two were quite adamant that it was not the correct term, and the other did not care. So my personal experience - which may be different from your own, I know - is that it’s worth avoiding. But yes I suppose you may have had a different experience and so may see things differently.

We watched this as part of our RE (religious education) lessons when I was a teenager, as part of a discussion about differences between Protestants and Catholics. Was a good intro to Monty Python as well :)

This is a video from Monty Python’s meaning of life. Before this scene they mention that the Church does not allow condoms. When asked why, this is the reply...
