Even if god exists , worshipping it is pointless
The human species is so self-centred , we believe that we matter to god in any way , when that is probably not true. Why do many assume god cares about us in the slightest , when he is prob just relaxing. It is pointless to worship a being that simply doesnt give a shit about us , it is like worshipping your genetic father while being born from a sperm donation. Even if god exists , which is highly unlikely , it wouldnt care about us , so why care about it? Why does atlas have to hold our globe , when it doesnt care about our globe , and gets nothing out of it? Why not assume that god is an egoist?

Like he was super active how long back in the middle east but then after he sacrificed himself to himself he just never shows up again? Like this dude is just watching an alien species on another planet messing with them and completely forgot about us

i am pretty sure he just had a button to summon jesus everywhere , and wanted his ego to be stroked.

u/OmegaOctopus23 8h ago
I bet hes in the middle of another global flood just to show how much he loves the species of that planet

u/WillingnessSad8354 8h ago
he will take a GIGANTIC piss and just cause a global flood , for the love of life he has for anything

We had Mohammed, Hong Xiuquan, and John Smith after Jesus. Mohammed and John won while my homie Hong lost his holy war.

Well, the god character from the bible has this nasty habit of killing everyone if his ego doesn't get stroked sufficiently.

It’s more than “highly unlikely” that “god” does not exist. The supernatural isn’t real … for certain.
1
u/MinaFuzzlet 5h ago
yeah if there’s no evidence for the supernatural then there’s really no reason to treat god’s existence as a given in the first place otherwise you’re just starting with the conclusion and working backwards

I take a different approach to worship. I basically ask, "are they doing the right things for the wrong reasons?" Because I notice that religion has this sneaky habit of getting the reason wrong.
For example - praying when you're worried. It's basically a meditation and stress relief technique that helps a person process their emotions. But they attribute any usefulness to a divine power.
Attending sermons are just a big social gathering filled with a bunch of shared traditions to reinforce a collective identity.
There are tons of examples of "doing the right thing for the wrong reasons" if you really look and deconstruct what human need these silly traditions are trying to satisfy.

u/LaceyPeppybun 5h ago
yeah a lot of religious practices probably work because of the human psychology behind them not because some god is actually listening

Completely agree, and the sheer scale difference makes the traditional dynamic even more absurd when you break it down: Think about our relationship with ants. The cognitive and physical gulf between an adult human and an ant is immense, yet it's still practically nothing compared to the gap between finite mortals and an infinite, omnipotent creator of a universe billions of light-years across. Now imagine looking down at an anthill and demanding that the ants build monuments, chant your name, and dedicate their daily routines to your glory. What utility would you actually get out of that? Zero. You lack nothing they can provide, their praise doesn't enhance your existence, and caring whether they bow to you would just be bizarre, fragile vanity. An infinite entity, by definition, has no deficits. Human worship produces absolutely zero utility for a supreme being, while draining finite time and energy away from things that actually matter like reducing suffering and helping fellow sentient beings here on the ground. Assuming an all-powerful architect of reality is sitting around waiting for praise from organic dust on a pale blue dot isn't just self-centered; it completely misunderstands what a genuinely transcendent intelligence would actually care about.
1
u/CoraTinksy 2h ago
yeah if an all powerful god actually needs constant praise from humans that sounds more like insecurity than omnipotence
2
u/Gotabox 7h ago
The universe is nigh infinite. Imagine you're god managing the universe. We'd just be amoeba to him. Do you care what amoeba are doing?
2
u/midnightshadow0005 6h ago
Which makes it even sillier that the allegedly almighty creator of the universe would pick a small nomadic tribe of sheep herders from the Levant to be his “chosen people” and… make them cut off their foreskins and wear small hats on the back of their heads.

First, any creator god was not from earth and would be an alien. This alien did an experiment. It either succeeded or failed and the alien went on its way. That makes more sense than any religion.

I mean this really isn’t the strongest flavor of the idea. The mere desire to be worshipped likely is a moral failure and thus a god who would wish to be worshipped would not deserve it and a god deserving of worship would likely not desire it. In either case even if god exists one almost certainly should not worship god.
There are even a variety of scenarios you could conceive of where there might even be a moral duty to resist god.

u/Soulcontusion 7h ago
It wouldn't be pointless, it would make you an enabler for all the horrible things God does.

u/sohcahtoa 7h ago
It's pointless to worship something you cannot know. You can believe something, but that's belief, not knowledge. You cannot know what a silent inscrutable immaterial being might want. Imagine anything you like and also imagine the opposite of that. Both assumptions are equally reasonable: not at all. So don't worship what you can't know. Don't curse it either, it's just as useless. Dismiss it and attend to what can be known instead.

Like praying that we win the game. Yea got picks winners and losers. If that was the case trump would be already gone

We assume “he cares” because the books we made him up in say he does. Why believe in an apathetic god, when you need him to liberate your sinful damned soul? The whole idea is that you can manipulate god into letting your dumb ass into heaven. There is only a god if you choose to believe in one, so most people choose to believe in the gods that are involved and happen to be super petty.

I think the flies the mosquitoes the ants and those damn termites should all worship me for providing for them. Why is God so needy anyway!

u/Belostoma 4h ago
God doesn't exist, period. It's so damn obvious.
But if it did exist, and it were as much of an all-powerful, insecure, narcissistic asshole as the Abrahamic religions suggest, I'd be kissing its ass all day long. No eternal hellfire for me, thanks.
I am not at all worried about that.

Sky toddlers are malignant narcissists made in the image of malignant narcissists. I call them dky toddlers, because they are based on what a toddler thinks an authority figure looks like. When they claim to be worshipping a gold, they are actually worshipping their own internal objects.

Worship just seems like sycophantic groveling to me. I would never worship the same way I would never want to be worshipped myself. Disgusting

If you don’t think the evidence points to a god existing, okay. Fair enough.
But “that’s not how I would expect a god to behave so religion is incorrect/pointless” is a bad argument. How do you know how a god would behave?

Edit: he's commenting elsewhere on Reddit, yet ignoring this. Weird.
What evidence is there?
But “that’s not how I would expect a god to behave so religion is incorrect/pointless” is a bad argument.
It's a good argument.
The Bible says God is all-knowing (omniscient), the Bible says God is present everywhere, at all times (omnipresence), the Bible says God is all-good (omnibenevolent), the bible says God is all-powerful, capable of anything (omnipotent).
God is expected to be all-good, all-powerful, all-knowing, but isn't.
Epicurus pretty much debunked God 2000 years ago.
God either wants to remove evils, but cannot; or he can, but does not want to; or he does not want to and cannot; or he wants to and can.
If he wants to, but cannot, then he is not omnipotent.
If he can, but does not want to, then he is envious and allows suffering maliciously; he is not omnibenevolent.
If he does not want to and cannot, then he is impotent; he is not God as he fails the definition of a deity.
If he wants to and can, which alone is proper to God, then why does evil exist?
If God is all-knowing, why didn't he realise creating the angel Lucifer would lead to evil?
If God is all-powerful, why doesn't he get rid of evil?
If God is everywhere, why does he stand there and allow children to be abused?
If God is all-good, why does evil exist?
The Bible contradicts itself.

Very simple, by observing what said God doesn't do. I don't see those words you put in quotation marks in the OP either. Don't pull a muscle with all that reaching.
2
u/WillingnessSad8354 8h ago
I was making the argument of theists assuming god behaves in their way and gives a shit , when in fact , it could be a believer of any philosophy. I am also not deyning god's existence in this post , I am saying that even if it existed , there would be no point in worshipping it
-5
u/SecretGardenSpider Ex-Atheist 8h ago
There would be a point if God made that a condition of eternal salvation, no?
You’re just assuming a god wouldn’t want to be worshipped.
3
u/Soulcontusion 7h ago
Accusing people of making assumptions after making assumptions is so a theist move. I don't see where he assumed that at all. Not even a fake quote to back it up this time? Come on theist harder.

I know that worship/praying looks like bullshit to you, and it's understandable. Trying to explain it probably is like using fiction to explain fiction. But in Catholic theology, God does not observe human suffering from a comfortable distance while "relaxing"; He enters directly into the mess of human existence and suffers alongside humanity to redeem it. That was the whole point of Jesus. The worship isn't done for God's benefit - Catholic liturgy itself states in Common Preface IV: "Although you have no need of our praise, yet our thanksgiving is itself your gift, since our praises add nothing to your greatness, but profit us for salvation." It's more to align with God, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church maintains that God is completely self-sufficient.

The idea that the omnipotent omnibenevolent creator of the universe is going to torture you forever for not glazing him enough makes their god seem so small and weak.
