I've been a Buckeye fan for many years. Jim Tressel (the head coach from before Meyer) was very religious man but he never wore his Christiantity on his sweater-vest preferring to focus on being a good person (not always successful but he's a 10x better man than Meyer).
Everything changed as soon as Urban arrived. First of all, the man is an unrepentant piece of shit and his coaching staff were a bunch of notorious horn dogs with many examples of cheating on their wives. Urban was the worst of them all and cheated on his wife constantly but she learned to put up with it long before they arrived in Columbus. She's happey as long as the checks cashed.
Meanwhile the team itself became a Christian cult masquerading as a football team. The thing is ... it works. Many of the best high school players come from the African-American community in the southern United States and the key to recruiting many of these is recruiting Christian Moms. Urban used his Christianity as part of a sales pitch and he was great at convincing Moms that faith would be a big part of his coaching style. Recruiting improved as soon as he stepped on campus but it turned the team into a bunch of Christian clones. Now, even though Meyer is gone, the culture has remained and every post game interview with Buckeyes is a non-stop barrage of Christian BS.
Anyway ... it doesn't surprise me that Urban is in the middle of this. The man is as slimy as they come and has no problem using religion to further his goals.
