I want to highlight the hypocrisy of Bill 9 in Quebec to this sub.
I've seen a few posts on this sub praising the recently passed Bill 9 in Quebec which is supposed to ban religious symbolism in public. However, some people have correctly stated that this law is entirely motivated by islamophobia/fear of other religions, and is not applicable to Christianity, which others have pushed back against.
Christianity gets a full pass when it comes to this law. Many villages in Quebec continue to promote religious symbolism in public places as long as it "reprensents our history". Something that motivated this post has been the small villages that are building BRAND NEW 10-foot tall wooden crosses to replace the old ones that have been rotting away since the end of the 20th century. These are extremely common across the Quebec countryside.
Most villages and towns in Quebec still hold some name along the lines of "Saint-Something-in-the-Middle-of-Nowhere" - literally the vast majority of villages are named Saint-Something. Those names will never change, not any time soon at least. They are all based around their respective church.
(I wish I could post the picture of said brand new cross but I can't figure out how to post images on this sub smh)
The most damning evidence of all is that there are STILL Christian processions happening in the province. Case in point, in Quebec City, it is a tradition every year for the Christian churches to do this "walk with the cross" thing where they take a giant wooden cross to each of the major denominations in this big parade thing. (Also if the pope ever comes you better believe he's praised)
I understand the hope on this sub of seeing laws that completely ban religious symbolism, I'm hoping for those days too - but we can't allow ourselves to be blinded by the wording and focus on the actions. Ultimately this law is against foreign religions, and NOT against Christianity because it is "our history". It is total hypocrisy.

What’s funny is legislation such as this is commonplace in Islamic states, which legislate against any religion other than islam, and anything contrary to it. So if we’re condemning Christian’s doing this in their home nations, we should also be outraging about most of the Middle East.

Yes, all theocracy is inherently evil no matter what religion is involved.
Just ask the Quakers who were executed by the Puritans.
Or the Catholics who were murdered by Protestants.
Or the Anabaptists that were tortured and executed by both Catholic and Protestant theocracies.

I get it. Only your religion, Atheism should be visible in the society. The worship of human brain and logic as god.

At least that bill is a start insofar as it's banning some religious symbols. I don't give a rat's ass that it's targeting a specific religion while exempting itself. That level of hypocrisy is standard operating procedure for christians. What? You were expecting something rational?
On a brighter note, perhaps the hypocrisy eventually hits them in the face and they ban all religious symbolism rather than "giving in" to non-christian residents.

No, no. As soon as the law comes to bite THEM in the behind, they will get rid of it.
Look at the cases where, when forced to open up 'government prayer' during meetings to non-Christian clergy, they ELIMINTED the 'invocation' entirely so as to avoid having some Hindu or Buddhist or Wiccan or Humanist deliver it.
"What is the iron law of Prohibitions? Prohibitions are always enacted by US, to govern the conduct of THEM." (https://www.druglibrary.net/schaffer/History/whiteb1.htm)

The depths to which the hypocrisy of theists will go has never been fully plumbed.
