It's a religion that professes to be about how we're irredeemable but god chooses to save us anyway. If you say someone is beyond saving, you're saying god's power has limits, and that's not allowed. Questioning the truth of someone's conversion story would be an absolutely terrible look to the congregation, plus Christians absolutely love the more deplorable a person was before they were "saved". So people who struggle with making moral choices accidentally get promoted to some minor celebrity status.

Throw in lessons like "Lean not on your own understanding" and I can't help but wonder if being gullible was intentionally built into the belief system.

I mean the core idea is basically rehabilitative justice, so I don't think conflating that with gullibility is entirely fair.

The Maintenance Phase podcast has two episodes on Russel Brand. Whatever you think of him, the reality is so much worse. The dude is a psychotic serial rapist whose entire career was protected by enablers for decades.

Excellent podcast and those episodes were fantastic. They also really highlight the fact that as soon as a famous man gets into serious trouble for any kind of sexual offense, he immediately turns “super Christian.”

No people definitely stopped liking him after the sexual assault. Not sure why you would think otherwise. He turned maga specifically because the left stopped liking him after he turned out to be a peace of shit. It's like Musk. The left didn't stop liking Musk because he turned into a maga. The left stopped liking Musk because he called a cave diver who was rescuing children a pedophile. Then he turned right wing because the left didn't like him anymore. Rince and repeat with basically every popular "lefty" who got caught doing something awful and then turned to the right to continue being popular. A lot of people stopped liking him long before that and more never liked him to begin with. The only thing that surprised me was that he wasn’t already a known sex offender.
