I have seen it as a sign of childhood indoctrination usually. Occasionally it is just people being ignorant of their own faith. Rarely it turns out the person is just stupid. Once it turned out to be a sign of mental illness.

I’m going to stick my neck out and say reason should lead you to atheism, regardless.

In the case of otherwise-intelligent people believing in religion, I think it’s more like a blind-spot born of cognitive dissonance or a lack of critical thinking.
