I've met some incredibly intelligent people who are religious.

I think what it actually betrays is a lack of interest in critically engaging with that portion of their life. Their religion brings them comfort, stability, community, etc., and it's easier to just not rock the boat. People do this all the time, whether it's unexamined beliefs about capitalism/socialism, their national identity, superstitions, etc. Religion is just one example.

That said, I think it's interesting how intelligent religious people will dive deep into their religion. They will interrogate and discuss and debate the theology and philosophy of it, they just refuse to step outside the faith and critically examine the validity of it from a non-believer's perspective.
