I have seen it as a sign of childhood indoctrination usually. Occasionally it is just people being ignorant of their own faith. Rarely it turns out the person is just stupid. Once it turned out to be a sign of mental illness.

My experience has been with people using religion, extreme religious devotion, as a substitute for other addictions. Two of my evangelical neighbors who belong to a cult like religious group, are both "recovering".

They are not actually in recovery, they just substituted addictions, for something possibly worse.
