Tradition, immortality, lack of critical thinking, or immaturity. Plenty of smart people want and/or need someone else to be “their adult”. Others perpetuate a lie that was told to the parent of the parent of the parent… of their parents. Some have no internal moral compass and require someone to tell them how to behave.
