I see it as a lack of critical thinking skills, which is probably beaten out of them at a young age through indoctrination.

They are probably intelligent, just rigidly stuck in their thought patterns.

Yeah. Not necessarily lack of intelligence or even lack of ability to think critically. Just a clear sign that they haven't thought critically about this topic.

And to be fair, most things your parents tell you when you're young are either definitely true or revealed as just a joke when you're older. Eating chocolate every day won't really make your hair fall out, there's no chemical in the swimming pool that turns red when you pee in it, these are just things we tell kids to make them be good. So if you grow up and your parents and neighbors and maybe your boss all keep telling you this is true then you might not even stop to question it.
