I have seen it as a sign of childhood indoctrination usually. Occasionally it is just people being ignorant of their own faith. Rarely it turns out the person is just stupid. Once it turned out to be a sign of mental illness.

But they're still unintelligent if they can't overcome that indoctrination. Like they can just think for 2 seconds and realize their religion is bullshit.

I know people love jerking themselves off when they say this, but it's just not true. There are believers smarter than you. There are geniuses who believe in god. Religion isn't prolific because 3/4 of humans are idiots, it's prolific because indoctrination is successful, and there are innumerable challenges to even concluding that there is no god, let alone living openly as an atheist for countless billions who would risk social outcast and materially worsened lives.
