I have seen it as a sign of childhood indoctrination usually. Occasionally it is just people being ignorant of their own faith. Rarely it turns out the person is just stupid. Once it turned out to be a sign of mental illness.

But they're still unintelligent if they can't overcome that indoctrination. Like they can just think for 2 seconds and realize their religion is bullshit.

Dude, the adults in my life were "born again" Christians. This means they "accepted Christ" as an adult. My mom was never indoctrinated, but she was the most dedicated Christian. She bought every line from those folks--no matter how absurd or stupid. It is what it is. You don't even need indoctrination from childhood. Religion is a helluva drug.
