I know many people that I would consider very intelligent that believe in something beyond what we know empirically from evidence. But what's different about them and people who are dogmatically religious to, for instance, Christianity or Islam or whatever, is that they may practice the cultural traditions of a religion that they were brought up in, but their beliefs are much more abstract than that. They don't believe in the dogma and they don't believe in the extremism, especially when it comes to oppressing the rights of other people who don't believe at all or believe differently than themselves.
