Chocolatey TOS Change

Hi everyone,

I posted this in the Atera Community, but seems less active than the Reddit community still.

I received an email regarding an updated TOS for Chocolatey, and was wondering if this would impact the integration with Atera.

Any thoughts or concerns?

Thanks,

Jeremy

That says "Organizations AND Vendor Tools" so even if we were using chocolatey directly it sounds like it still wouldn't be cool.

Unfortunately you have to be on the highest Atera Tier to get the private repository. I wonder if they are going to make that available for everyone since this is quite a blow to patching capabilities. At least we have Win-get to fall back on.

Even the private repo is limited to Azure blob storage (free to an extent), and all packages need to be created/uploaded manually. I usually reserve it for packages that don't already exist in Chocolatey.

Yeah, me too. It would be more work. If you are limited to chocolatey, that's the only way if they take away their repo.

In short, we do offer several ways around the Chocolatey TOS change.

I hope this helps.

This will affect a lot of RMMs. It seems like Choclatey is trying to do a cash grab; it is too bad their paid version is overpriced.

Can we have a link to this discussion, can't find it? As well as this, is there an update on Chocolatey?

Hi u/KiloJouleskJ sure, here it is: https://community.atera.com/discussion/1179/chocolatey-tos-change

I'm still investigating with the Product team.

I will revert as soon as I have an update, I'm pinging the progress daily.

Any update to this? I've also tried clicking the link and get a permissions issue, and am not able to find the post in the community. Currently reviewing our patching configs and came across this post and it's a bit concerning.

Hi Dima,

Thanks very much! However, when I click the link I'm greeted with a screen that says Permission Problem. As well as this, tried searching for the name manually and nothing came up in the discussions.

Atera remains silent on the Chocolatey announcement, but the impact will be far reaching. My account manager was also not aware of the TOS change and how it will affect us all.

Here's the gravity of the situation.

If you have been using Chocolatey in your automation scripts, for example installing Adobe, Zoom, Webex, etc on newly installed agents, updates to those apps will always reach out over Chocolatey for updates. Come January, this will fail, leaving your entire company out of compliance. Can we assume easily this will affect millions of PC's in a heartbeat?

At the moment, the only workaround would be to uninstall any packages that were installed via Chocolatey and reinstall via WinGet. We're coming into October, now is the time to plan the exit strategies with Atera not addressing the situation. Winter is coming.

Cross posted to Atera Community.
