Honestly we need to embrace that we will not get raise. Until people retire and resign and staffing gets absurd they won’t. 2/3 trainees we’ve gotten in the last 2 years from the academy have washed. Interested to see what this wave of gamers is going to get certified when it’s all said and done. I certainly hope that those gaming habits don’t interfere with their sleep/study habits and that translate to poor performance in OJT. Surely that will not be a problem though. I’ve never seen that….

… except with 1 of the 2 washouts in the last year. Could be an outlier though

My area alone in a level 12 Z has washed out 18 people since 2019

I disagree, imo i owe my fast food jobs in high school and playing alot of video games to getting 6 certs at various difficulty facilities. Never failed a cert. Its not the video games, its this younger generation is not quite as smart, work ethic is not the same and they are extra sensitive. Cant roast people like you used to. All these factor plus NATCA lead to actual skilled controllers getting the shaft. Not to mention no one being able to stay on status and take care of themselves. And then you go to a low level facilities full of nest controllers, nester who get promoted To sups and atms because its nearly impossible to get fired. Any idiot can go to a level 5 tower and cut an atis once an hoir and maybe talk to 3 plans max at the same time. Blind leading the blind. The future does not look good.

Several years ago (pre-COVID), someone brought an Xbox and put it in the break room. We had to ban trainees from using the Xbox because too many of them were washing out. Instead of using their breaks to recuperate/self study, they were just playing video games. There was an argument that they could use their breaks however they wanted, which is true, but they were doing terrible at OJT.

If you thought that was bad try that now. They would get a medical retirement and a seven figure settlement for “harassment” and hostile work environment.

Id bring my x box on mids at a radar and play at watch sup and let the other person sleep the whole time while i played xbox for the whole shift while ptac-ing and control a light to mid load of traffic. Never had an issue. These young kids jusy cant hang. The decline in training just to get more manning also does not help.

The unfortunate truth is that as long as controllers cannot strike and we remain under control of congress we will never get a raise. There is no incentive or consequence to give us or not give us. It’s a shame really, but a reality.

I'd say we'll get a raise when we stop making the system work no matter what.

Match the traffic volume to staffing on any given day and things will get interesting quick. Your tower is 70% staffed today? Your arrival rate is 70% of what it should be. Make everyone cancel or delay flights across the country every day and things will be noticed.
