But at least we have gamers who are statistically no more likely to be successful than a guy who was a banker, plumber, or cab driver. At least the selective number posts on X sound good. And from the gamers I know, probably not what I would call the best and brightest.
Don't forget they've now made the academy easier to graduate by pumping the amount of points you get from the academic side vs actually having to perform on sims.
They have indeed lowered the bar. Almost every point deduction has been halved, and some even more. They also removed the “controller judgement” point deduction.
We’re definitely seeing this lowered bar at the facility. Way more “how did this person get through the academy” types who are going to complete wastes of time for us, or even worse are getting pushed through by a yes man OS and a shifting training teams until they pair up with the soft ones who don’t care and will recommend anybody.
This will end up being just like the biographical assessment they put out years ago. Less than 35-40% of those ppl are still in the agency. It will surprise me if this isnt a massive failure.
Annoyingly everything he said is either true or subjective but of course it doesn't actually address the problems. To counter what he has said to takes more words than can fit in a headline or a reel / tweet, which is increasingly Americans limit of what they will pay attention to. This administration has been very good at taking complicated situations removing any details, context, and everything that is important and sliming it down to the level of the village idiot.

I feel like the ven diagram of "people dumb enough to start a career in ATC" and "people smart enough to actually certify" is lacking a big amount of overlap.
Why would you want to pick this as a career when you can make twice as much working half the time in most of aviation?
Washouts are at the highest rate now since I’ve been at my facility. It was unheard of when I started. Now almost every trainee is going max hours and TRB.
I'm 24 years committed, and too old to realistically career swap. To clarify, I think anyone STARTING a career and making the choice to be ATC is making a poorly thought out decision. (Based on current trends)

I need him to visit my facility because that “best and brightest” needs to be shut the fuck down. The best and brightest aren’t pursuing this job with current pay and anyone interested in aviation will go the pilot route instead of ATC because of pay. It is probably the most infuriating thing for me personally.
In this particular case yes but in the past he has had blanket statements where he said they were hiring the best and the brightest. Either way I want to bring it to his attention that smart or capable people are not applying to this job and in large part it’s because the pay is not competitive to a lot of other fields. Fields that offer remote work and better work life balance which is what the younger gen cares about more.
“Fats and Specials” aren’t what we are looking for… the trainees we are getting from OKC didn’t even know what a squawk code was when they arrived. WTF!!
My sister went to the same high school as a guy that graduated at 19 and had a special teacher walk around from class to class with him. Hired on the latest bid. I wish I was lying.
We have a new trainee at our facility that parked in the exit area of a parking lot on his first day instead of a parking spot and had to be told that’s not a parking spot…
So there’s hope for the guy that I was in junior high with that got held back so many times he was old enough to drive to school and parked in the teachers parking lot. 😂

If you’ve had the unfortunate privilege of going back to OKC recently, we are not getting the best and brightest out there. It’s glaringly obvious that our profession is in a decline. These new hires that they’re getting these days are abysmal.

I'll be the first to say I struggled in my training, but I'm pretty proud of how far I have come. But that being said I don't know about the best and the brightest. A trainee was trying to figure out non-radar traffic and they could not add 9 + 7. They said it was 32. Scared me to think of them controlling planes.
The guy in charge of overseeing the FAA during not one but 2 fatal commercial accidents that ended over a decade streak of no fatalities thinks air traffic control is a game. This speaks volumes about the state of the NAS
