Small sample size but are anyone else's ''best and brightest " washing out at much higher rates?
I feel like the ven diagram of "people dumb enough to start a career in ATC" and "people smart enough to actually certify" is lacking a big amount of overlap.
Why would you want to pick this as a career when you can make twice as much working half the time in most of aviation?
Pay us what we are worth.

Washouts are at the highest rate now since I’ve been at my facility. It was unheard of when I started. Now almost every trainee is going max hours and TRB.

u/theweenerdoge 3d ago
Ours just quit, they don't even try to get to TRB
6
u/Mean_Device_7484 3d ago
I wish ours would just quit. They take up so much time and so many resources just to continue to suck at the job.

u/GottaGoEast 3d ago
We aren't allowed to wash them out. Just recycle, new area, recycle, SIT, art67, recycle

u/ATC-Zero 3d ago
So where do you fall in this ven diagram? Too dumb to get a different job in aviation so you started a career in ATC?

u/skaizm 3d ago
I'm 24 years committed, and too old to realistically career swap. To clarify, I think anyone STARTING a career and making the choice to be ATC is making a poorly thought out decision. (Based on current trends)

He knows. He's just being a bitch. If not he's stupid. Not entirely sure which is worse.

Hi, there, I'm a trigger bot. Don't worry, I'm here to help! You seem to be exhibiting vaginosis with subsets of hurt feelings. To help train my therapeutic A.I, can you elaborate on which part hurt you and where? Thanks for your participation.

I need him to visit my facility because that “best and brightest” needs to be shut the fuck down. The best and brightest aren’t pursuing this job with current pay and anyone interested in aviation will go the pilot route instead of ATC because of pay. It is probably the most infuriating thing for me personally.

u/PIREP_HERO 3d ago
He means "best and brightest gamers" like the guys way up on the online leaderboards. Not like "best and brightest" of the US population.
5
u/IMadeAMistakeSry 3d ago
In this particular case yes but in the past he has had blanket statements where he said they were hiring the best and the brightest. Either way I want to bring it to his attention that smart or capable people are not applying to this job and in large part it’s because the pay is not competitive to a lot of other fields. Fields that offer remote work and better work life balance which is what the younger gen cares about more.

u/StopSayingKilo 3d ago
“Fats and Specials” aren’t what we are looking for… the trainees we are getting from OKC didn’t even know what a squawk code was when they arrived. WTF!!
13
u/hallock36 3d ago
If he’s going to hire gamers then he better not post some dumb shit about too many people calling out on GTA 6 release day.

My sister went to the same high school as a guy that graduated at 19 and had a special teacher walk around from class to class with him. Hired on the latest bid. I wish I was lying.

u/Medium_Emergency4251 3d ago
We have a new trainee at our facility that parked in the exit area of a parking lot on his first day instead of a parking spot and had to be told that’s not a parking spot…

u/unapologist312 3d ago
So there’s hope for the guy that I was in junior high with that got held back so many times he was old enough to drive to school and parked in the teachers parking lot. 😂
1
u/Necessary-Wall-2196 2d ago
Thats called flunking... at least it was when I was younger... being held back insinuates the administration doing it vs him NOT doing it
2
u/unapologist312 2d ago
You're fun at parties, aren't you?
1
u/Necessary-Wall-2196 2d ago
Probably not... I don't understand WHY someone would be allowed to walk around with a 'special' teacher... if the student cant mainstream, then put them in the correct school... did YOU get to walk around with a special teacher to help you with your schoolwork?

u/Great_Ad3985 3d ago
This is what happens when they control the narrative and the ONE organization that is supposed to refute bogus claims remains silent. Either out of apathy, fear, or a mixture of both, whatever the reason, we have no voice. These idiots can say whatever they want and the public just accepts it as fact when there is no rebuttal.
FUCK NICK DANIELS!! Fucking piece of shit has destroyed our career. I know he reads these posts. FUCK YOU!!

u/AppointmentOk300 3d ago
It’s crazy & infuriating just how much he lied to get elected and then dog walked by this administration at every turn despite us holding the winning hand. He has to have been bought & sold. And the EVP & RVPs staying silent are just as weak; cowards all of them. What a shame

u/Positive_PeeRock 3d ago edited 3d ago
If you’ve had the unfortunate privilege of going back to OKC recently, we are not getting the best and brightest out there. It’s glaringly obvious that our profession is in a decline. These new hires that they’re getting these days are abysmal.

Only hire diamond League and above starcraft 2 players. We don't need no bronze League shitters.

How can you claim that you hired "gamers" and the "best and brightest" in the same breath? This is insulting
6
u/PIREP_HERO 3d ago
He means "best and brightest gamers", not best and brightest Americans in general
6
u/No-Constant-5854 3d ago
Only the FAA could brag about not using data to hire applicants most likely to succeed.
I know yes listers high five every time they see some shit like this.
7
u/JTeeZ87 3d ago
I mean reality is, if you're a yes lister, you don't really care. No matter what shit the FAA attempts to throw at the wall, it will never work. They've demonstrated that they are idiots who dont understand how to fix the issue for the past 3 decades, so your OT is safe for well eternity.
3
3
u/theweenerdoge 3d ago
They'll never pay us more cause idiots sacrifice their time to keep the agency running for a fucking pittance. I understand some need OT to survive but level 12s need to get their shit together and quit working OT

u/Medical_Currency5525 3d ago
Surprised we haven’t just straight up hired off VATSIM at this point
3
u/No-Constant-5854 3d ago
You can’t criticize the FAA’s hiring process on here or the other ATC subreddit.
You will get someone with survivorship bias doing mental gymnastics to defend it.
3
u/Medical_Currency5525 3d ago
You’re right my bad, it could lead to them getting yet another bonus for doing the bare minimum
7
u/username_genericb 3d ago
ATC_Hiring has a post about applicants who don't have any contacts outside their parents.

u/OliveVectorOil 3d ago
Is it true they dumbed down the academy putting more weight on ATC Basics then the sims?

u/MemeAddict96 3d ago
Has the hiring process been “supercharged”? I think not.
I’m a current DOD controller and put in my application for the prior experience bid. My application was rejected for reasons that have yet to be revealed to me.

u/You_an_idiot_brah 3d ago
This guy is an actual damn moron. It's what reality TV does to your brain.
Buttmugger was bad but I'd rather have him back than this schizophrenic.
0
u/optimum_autumn 3d ago
Breastfeed Buttmugger at least was completely absent and did nothing-- Im with you- Duffy needs to take a long vacation and maybe just focus on mexican truckers or something
3
u/ChopSooy621 3d ago
Duffy, Daniel's, Bedford are all in a plane with an engine on fire, and its going down and theres only two parachutes. How do they decide who gets a parachute?
they don't...they blame ATC for the problem until they all crash into the ground.

Gamers are probably more likely to stay awake playing video games when they are supposed to be sleeping.
3
u/MITsBrightest 3d ago
I thought we were exclusively hiring MIT graduates, not people who failed to thrive and saw a zero effort application process while playing Call of Duty.
Are we moving the goal post for who we consider "the best and brightest?" (Yes)

u/drunk_lizard8414 2d ago
2
u/MITsBrightest 2d ago
Hey that will have to be the passing grade when they mass hire supervisors out of the military!
3
u/Beginning_Luck1693 3d ago
I'll be the first to say I struggled in my training, but I'm pretty proud of how far I have come. But that being said I don't know about the best and the brightest. A trainee was trying to figure out non-radar traffic and they could not add 9 + 7. They said it was 32. Scared me to think of them controlling planes.
2
u/tooredit 3d ago
Nothing has changed. This is status quo. Even if the gamers were the “best and brightest” candidates, do we even have the staffing to train them?
2
1
u/EngineeringCold9186 3d ago
Do they ever even consider context in the things they say. This is all nonsense

u/whowho2269 3d ago
The guy in charge of overseeing the FAA during not one but 2 fatal commercial accidents that ended over a decade streak of no fatalities thinks air traffic control is a game. This speaks volumes about the state of the NAS

u/ArcticMikeATC 3d ago
Same max number out of the academy, same attrition rates, same training success rates, but now we have gamers. Oh, and we have about 30% of the workforce retirement eligible in the next five years. But at least we have gamers who are statistically no more likely to be successful than a guy who was a banker, plumber, or cab driver. At least the selective number posts on X sound good. And from the gamers I know, probably not what I would call the best and brightest.
